Shine a Light on Drug Industry Influence

Shine a Light on Drug Industry Influence

Target:
Member of Congress
Note: We greatly appreciate international support, but US signatures only please! Only US signatures will influence congress in this matter.

Drug marketing is out of control. Help send a message to Congress.

Support the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, which will require drug companies to publicly report their gifts and payments to doctors.

Drug companies spend at least $25 billion each year marketing to doctors. We pay for that with every drug we buy. And studies prove that marketing causes doctors to prescribe higher-cost drugs. Some new drugs also have safety risks (like Vioxx). By increasing transparency, the Sunshine Act will help protect patients and help counter the skyrocketing costs of drugs.

Sign this petition today to ask your members of Congress to support these bills. Shine a light on undue influence by the drug industry.

We the undersigned support the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, which would require drug and medical device companies to publicly report their gifts and payments to doctors.

Drug companies alone spend at least $25 billion per year marketing to doctors. Not only are these costs passed on to consumers (that $25 billion is built in to the cost of every drug we buy) but published evidence clearly shows that marketing spending shifts doctors toward higher cost and sometimes less-safe drugs.

As consumers and taxpayers, we ask you to help pass this Act to protect patients and begin reigning in the skyrocketing costs of drugs.

I have a personal interest in this petition. As I write this my daughter is lying in bed in extreme pain from a drug given to her by a doctor in 2004 who stated there were no side effects except hot flashss. He never looked at her file as she is allergic to meds, nor did he look at his PDR. My daughter lives in bone pain memory loss and many of the side effects that are noted for this drug.WE have been to many doctors in Georgia and they all seem to be protecting the drug company. Going to Houston , Texas to a well know clinic gave us the truth. Her disability is from the drug and she will never be able to work again. She really has no life now as she use to show horses and had a horse farm. I am her Mother and have to be with her 24/7. I see that Chambliss and Ikison declined the proposal to control the Pharmaceutical companies. Now I know where the money goes. and why I have little or no input from them. This is a crime. My daughter is an ICU nurse and worked for the Athens Regional Hospital, the doctor is from Athens. They fired her when she became sick.

The physician-drug industry relationship is in direct conflict with the physician-patient relationship. Gifts and payments to doctors = conflicts of interest. These bills which will require drug companies to publicy report their gifts and payments to doctors are essential in helping change the current culture and reinforce the more important relationship between the patient and their physician.

It's frightening to think that the person who has your life in their hands may be influenced by other things than your health and well being.

I am a physician and member of IPPNW Germany, Phycicians for Social Responsability, whose Berlin group addresses the issue of the immense undue influence the pharmaceutical industry has on the medical profession, medical practice and research. The sunshine bill is one of the means to ease this influence by making the relationship between many doctors and medical institutions and the industry at least transparent. Why doctors don't want receiving gifts to become public, if there isn't anything to hide or feel bad about it? I hope this legal initiative will succeed and other countries will do likewise. This surely would be in the interest of the patient, the independence of my profession, which partly has been sold to the pharmaceutical industry, and the public welfare.
