Whatever it is that I do, I want it to have a long term visible impact and for it to be practical. If I have the opportunity, I would most like to restore the natural environment in the Himalayas and Tibet, and to especially protect the forests, the water and wildlife of this region.

His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa calls for the protection of environment across the globe. In his address beginning Thursday at Bodh Gaya in Bihar, the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Thrinley Dorje, a spiritual leader of the Kagyu sect Buddhists, said there was a need to improve the environment in Tibet and Himalayas.

Karmapa asked his followers to protect the earth and live simply. He also revealed his vision of building environment management capacity for all Kagyu monasteries and centres.
To send a strong message of environment protection, hundreds of participants of the eight-day long prayer festival would be engaged in cleaning work around Bodh Gaya on Dec 29.

Hoardings have been put around Bodh Gaya to spread message of environment protection.Thousands of Buddhists monks and devotees congregated in Bodh Gaya to hear the sermon. "Around 10,000 lamas, Tulkus, monks and nuns from around 52 countries including US, china, Portugal, Nepal, Taiwan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar are participating in the prayer," said an official of Karmapa.

His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa formally launched www.khoryug.com, a Tibetan and English-language website dedicated to environmental protection. The website offers educational resources on environmental protection, news on environmental projects underway in Kagyu monasteries and nunneries, and offers a forum for people interested in the environment. Khoryug.com forms part of a larger series of projects that His Holiness has undertaken to protect the earth for future generations, goals for which will eventually restore the natural environment of Tibet and the Himalayan areas.

KHORYUG is a network of Buddhist monasteries and centers in the Himalayas working together on environmental protection of the Himalayan region with the aim of practically applying the values of compassion and interdependence towards the Earth and all living beings that dwell here.

As Buddhist practitioners, we believe that our actions must flow from our aspiration to benefit all sentient beings and safeguard our mother Earth and that this positive change in our societies must begin with ourselves first.

KHORYUG aims to develop a partnership with community based organizations and NGOs wherever there is a member monastery or center so that together with our communities, we can help and protect all life on Earth now and for the future.
