Support a National Bottle Bill

Target:
U.S. Congress
Sponsored by:
There has been an alarming trend recently in recycling rates in the United States. They have been dropping. According to studies done by the Container Recycling Institute, recycling rates for aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles have fallen by anywhere between 10 and 20%. This leaves the national beverage container recycling rate at about 40%. Not Good.
However, there is hope. Beverage container recycling rates in states with bottle bills are much higher. Some of the most successful stories include Michigan with a 95% beverage container recycling rate and Oregon with a beverage container reycling rate of 83%. Even some of the less successful stories like California still have rates of 60% or higher.
Many bottle bills have come up in past years but none of them have been passed into law. Urge congress to support a national bottle bill.

Dear Decision Maker,

We the undersigned have found the recent decline in the national beverage container recycling rate to be rather alarming. Instead of trying to recycle more, people are recycling less. Recycling rates for aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles have dropped off between ten and twenty percent over the past ten years. This leaves the national beverage container recycling rate at 40 percent. This is very disappointing considering that this rate was over 50 percent just 10 short years ago.

However, there is a way to change this. Beverage container recycling rates in states with bottle bills are much, much higher than the national average. Some of the most successful stories include Michigan with a 95% beverage container recycling rate and Oregon with a rate of 83%, Even states where the bottle bill has been less successful, such as California, have beverage container recycling rates of 60% or greater.

There are many advantages to passing a national bottle bill. One of them is litter reduction. No one wants to go to a park or other public place and see litter thrown around. It is not very attractive. Passing a national bottle bill can help with this situation. Studies have shown that in states with bottle bills, total litter was reduced by 30-50%.

A national bottle bill will also help to create new jobs. In states with bottle bills, the deposit system has created tens of thousands of new jobs. In times when the economy is sagging and with many people being laid off, it is important to support programs and industries that will create new jobs and a national bottle bill is one of those.

There are many more benefits as well including waste reduction and an increase in recycling rates.

The benefits of passing a national bottle bill far out-weight the negatives. Many bottle bills have been proposed in past years but none of them have been passed into law. The time has come to change that. We urge you to support a national bottle bill next time one enters Congress.

Thank you for your time and attention on this very important issue.

Making a universal 5 cent return on all bottles and cans sold in the US makes sense. Having only certain bottles and cans be returnable causes confusion and deters many people from recycling. In the past most bottled beverages were carbonated, now that is no longer the case, with the refusal of most people to drink any water other than from a bottle and the new fruit drinks and flavored water explosion that has occurred in the last decade. Please help pass a bill that will help limit some of the wastefulness of our "disposable" society.

Water bottles should be illegal! Encourage American consumers to drink from their tap- where the water is just as healthy and no more harmful than "filtered" water. At the very least, let Americans know that their water bottles are very harmful for the environment.

With the demand for recycled PET, greater than the supply, something needs to change with the recycling rate. The PET bottle is a treasure that should not be thrown away.

The citizens of the United States take great pride in their country's position as the world's leader with respect to technology, economy, education, and the advancement of freedom, among others. It is concerns me greatly that our nation, as the most influential world leader, lags so far behind the rest of the world in something as important as recycling. By increasing the recycling rates for beverage containers in this country, the National Bottle Bill will extend the life of landfills, decrease our dependence on imported materials such as oil, help to clean up our roadsides and public places, lower energy costs of materials manufaturing (example: recycled Al vs. new production from Bauxite ore), preserve valuable natural resources for the future and set a positive example for other nations to follow. Vote for the National Bottle Bill, it makes sense economically, politically, and environmentally. Thank You, Thomas Wilson La Crosse, WI

In New York, we have been advocating for 6 years for a Bigger Better Bottle Bill that would add the nickel deposit to water, iced tea, juice and sports drinks. We need a national bill and we need it now!

Federal Governmant needs to show leadership in the area of recycling.Deposit systems drastically increase the quantity and quality of recycling as well as reduce our energy consumption and air emissions.

We need this bill to be introduced and signed. It's unthinkable that only 11 of our 50 states has a bottle bill today. Are we living in the dark ages with the cave man?

A third of the American people now live in states with container deposits, greatly enhancing their statewide recycling programs. Isn't it time we had national legislation to improve the quality of life for the remaing 2/3s?!

We need a National Bottle bill now. Millions of bottles are being discarded everyday. They fill our landfills but not only that they fill our oceans! Wildlife is dying from ingesting plastic, the plastic is breaking down and turning the ocean to plastic soup. We are using 8% of our oil to produce the bottles. Glass too, is difficult to manage, even when it is collected in traditional curbside programs, it cannot be made into glass, most ending up in the landfills to stay there for 1000 years. Pass a bottle bill now, and end this vicious cycle.
