Support Equine Dentists

Target:
Support the International Association of Equine Dentistry practice!
Help us in the fight!

Some states are being petitioned by state vet boards to make it illegal for "trained" equine dentists to work in their states.  Equine dentists (IAED) are professionally trained and are totally dedicated to servicing the needs of equine dentistry care.  The Vet board in Texas is trying to make it illegal for equine dentists to perform their profession.  The vets want to pass the petition, resulting in having to take your horse to the vet to have routine "floating" procedures.  In vet school, the training is entirely optional. The students spend a quick two weeks practicing with horse dentistry.

Then think about the Professional Equine Dentist. These Dentists are professionally trained and hold knowledagble information in the specific field of Horse Dentistry.

As an equine owner/breeder... I found out about this the hard way by taking my miniature mare and my young stallion to my vet for a routine floating.  My mare had a really poor experience with the vet's "required sedation" for the procedure. Then they didn't even know how to handle or even move her...the tools were too big for her mouth. She was very slow to come out of sedation and regain function. Once they tried to sedate my stallion, the inexperienced vet, missed and hit his carotid artery.  My daughter and I went crazy because of the lack of training this vet had. After my stallion seized, the vet did not know what to do. I yelled for the techs to go get a vet that was more experienced, and thanks to the Lord the other vet knew what to give my stallion and he came out of the seizure.

Now I take my horses to a certified, trained, equine dentist...which all they do are horse teeth.  He floats my horse's teeth WITHOUT any sedation, the horses aren't scared, and they have a calm and healthy experience with their tooth care as well as floating procedures.

To put these trained professionals out of business just for the benefit of vets gaining money for a job they are not trained to do, would create a serious issue regarding our beloved horses. Think of this example, you do not have a vet trim your horses hooves. This profession remains specifically to the Ferrier. You should have the choice to take your horse to a Professional Equine Dentist.
Don't you think so, too?

Please support and tell your congress to keep our equine dentists!

I share my life with many miniature horses and know first hand that what the writer is saying here is correct. I live near LEXINGTON, KY, THE SELF PROCLAIMED "HORSE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD" and I cannot find any vets around capable of floating my horse's teeth!!! Do not jeopardize the health and safety of our beloved minis by falling under the sway of lobbying by the veterinarians!!! Thank you for caring enough about our horses to help protect their safety and voted down this unnecessary law. Sincerely, Joan

I am for Equine Dentists being able to perform their services in ANY state! Carl Mitz is an absolute wizard when it comes to providing quality dentistry to Miniature Horses. I don't know what I'd do without him, and my vet WELCOMES Carl to do the needed dentistry work on my Miniatures as they have admitted they cannot do the job as well as Carl!

As has been pointed out by the Institute for Justice (ij.org) attorneys, it its obvious that the vet boards are motivated by greed and attempting to limit competition. Equine dentistry has not been taught in our veterinary colleges, and therefore very few veterinarians are fully aware of the features/benefits of thorough equine dental care. Several non-veterinary equine dental practitioners have been hired to teach veterinary students the basics of this subject, which was in fact resurrected/maintained by the non-vets. Horse owners will (hopefully) not allow the vet boards/legislators to remove their right to choose who works on their horses.

I have heard that they are also trying to take away from the farriers and also to make it where even routine de-worming meds, etc. will only be available from vets. If all of these things were to come about, how many more people could not afford to take care of their horses? Our market is already being killed by soaring hay and grain prices. We don't need more expensive vet services.

We have been using the services of a Professional Equine Dentist for over two decades. Our local vets respect his work so much that they have on occasion come out to learn to do a better job by watching him. Most vets (if they don't have a huge ego problem) know that it is impossible for them to be experts in every medical speciality....that is why they bring in specialists - for ultrasound - for eye injuries whatever.... we need our professional dentists or our horses will suffer the consequences. We train and specialize in driving our horses and it is imperative that we have qualified inspections and care so that the bit rides correctly in the horses mouth without causing any irritations. I could go on and on.... we NEED these professionals period. end of story. thanks for listening.

Since legal proceeding were begun against Carl Mitz in Texas, I have been unable to find a provider of dental care for our horses. These are miniature horses which are known for multiple dental issues. It has been over 3 years now without dental care. Its getting increasingly hard to find large animal veterinarians. They don't have the desire to do dental work. They have referred to these certified technicians for years.

I raise miniature horses. My vet only has the large tools for working on their teeth. These large tools do not work on miniature horses. We need trained miniature horse dintists.

It is very important that we have Good Equine Dentists available to multi horse owners. First, I am a Miniature horse owner. We have access to many vets in our area, since there is a Vet college here. Yet, none of these vets have the proper equipment or the skills, to do Mini's teeth REgular horse vets do not do teeth all of the time, and many just butcher a horses mouth. All want to drug the horses before they do the work, and will charge in excess of $100 per horse whether the horse needs any work or not. With those kind of prices and lack of skills, many horses would never have their teeth done (especially multiple horse owners, which in the Miniature World is most owners). To do away with skilled horse dentists will be a MAJOR disservice to our Equines health, all so that the vets can put more money in their unsilled pockets.

Equine dentists are an important part of the care of the horse. Take away the ability of these highly educated men and women to practice and all would suffer. Not every veterinarian is qualified to work on teeth and if this law is passed, the well-being of the horse would be jeopardized. Allow these men and women to do their job, I would not trade my equine dentist for the world and know there are several others out there who share my sentiments. Let them practice.

Equine dentists are desperately needed. Vets in my area do not have the proper tools to work on miniature horses, but the equine dentists do. They are like any other equine "specialist" in a given area.
# 74:

We need equine dentists. My vet had no idea how to solve a problem with one of my mares, but my equine dentist diagnosed the problem and resolved it very quickly.
# 73:

I would much rather have my equine dentist do my horses' teeth than my vet. No sedation is necessary and the teeth are floated without the horses laying an ear back - not to mention much quicker and more efficiently.

Dear Sirs, I have an Equine Dentist I am very fond of and a very learned man. He works under a Vets supervision and I wouldn't have anyone else. He knows more than any of my local Vets do about teeth. Please do not do this. There is enough work to go around

We need qualified equine dentists who are knowlegable and skilled professionals in this field. Most liscensed vets do not have the training, experience or equipment that it takes to do the job correctly. The horse owner should have the right to decide who they want to work on their animals, just as we have the right to choose a specialized doctor for whatever medical reason we may need.

We need to preserve the right of highly skilled, and professional equine dentists. Not all equine vets are qualified to care for our horses teeth, a critical part of the horses well-being and regular care.

The care that my equine dentist give my horses is FAR superior to our vet. Their knowledge comes from years of experience in a specific field. We will fight to keep our service against the bureaucracy you are trying to shove down our throats.

Veternarians know little about working on teeth and usually will refer you to a Dentist!!!! I have used both and my vote is for the knowlegable HORSE DENTIST!!! Especially one that has been doing this for years. I have Miniature Horses and would fly Carl Mitz to my house before I would let my Vet touch one of my miniature Horses.
# 60:

DO NOT TAKE OUR DENTISTS AWAY. MY VETS DON'T HAVE THE TRAINING THAT THESE DENTISTS DO!!!
# 59:

We have never found a veterinarian that has the knowledge , skill, or expertise to work with my horses that my equine dentist does.

I support the owner's right to select whomever they want to do dental work on their horses. Carl Mitz does our horses dental work and does a great job - he has all the tools to work on miniature horses and the patience to get the job done. Most veterinarians don't have any tools to work on miniature horses teeth and if they do most are not that good at it.

THESE VETS DO NOT HAVE THE EXPERIENCE. OUR VET OF 25 YEARS REFER'S US TO EQUINE DENTISTS ALL THE TIME. WE HAVE USED OUR DENTIST FOR OVER 15 YEARS WITH ONLY PROFESIONAL RESULTS. HE USES NO DRUGS NO FORCE ONLY HIS EXPERTICE AND A CALM HAND. HE HAS SOLVED MANY DENTAL PROBLEMS AND RETURNED MANY,MANY HORES BACK TO A FULL AND USEFUL LIFE. DONT LET YHIS HAPPEN , WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE !!

Our horses need the expertise of Carl Mitz. Why doesn't the Texas Vet Board think about the welfare of our horses, not about politics and offices to be elected to! Veterinarians do not want to be dentists, especially for the miniature horses. We want to select our dentist, not be told who to use. Please stop taking jobs and the rights away from qualified dentists. A test could be used??
# 52:

This equine dentists are far more trained to do this kind of work than a Vet and have the tools to do the jobs with. I have miniature horses and most Vets do not have tools to work on them. Please let these trained equine dentists do their jobs. The Vets get plenty of money from other aspects of the medical profession on equine. Leave the teeth and hooves to the professional in those fields. Thanks Sandi Hodge Broken Shadow Ranch
