Workers leading the organizing of a union at newspapers and Web sites owned by MediaNews Group in the East Bay.

Support Journalists for Quality News and a Fair Deal

Target:
MediaNews Group Ownership
Our communities depend on quality local journalism to keep us informed and maintain a strong democracy.  With the newspaper industry in flux, we believe now is an especially important time for journalists to have a seat at the table in the decisions shaping the future of the news outlets we rely upon.

We, the undersigned, support the efforts of newsroom workers at the Bay Area News Group-East Bay to organize themselves into a new unit of the Media Workers Guild in order to have more of a say over their salaries, benefits, staffing, and the quality of their work. We recognize the link between better jobs and better journalism in our local newspapers.

We urge you to honor these workers' right to organize and to refrain from any tactics that might interfere with this right. If they should win formal recognition of the union, we ask you to negotiate a contract with them in a timely manner and in good faith.

We support the employees organizing for quality and a fair deal at the BANG-EB newspapers and Web sites.

Thank you for signing our petition to support journalists at the Bay Area News Group-East Bay. Support from inside and outside the newsroom led to our victory on June 13th - the largest new journalists' union in the U.S.in 20 years!

BUT NOW WE NEED YOU MORE THAN EVER...last Friday, July 11, MediaNews management retaliated against the union. In a layoff of 29 employees, 20 were visible supporters of the Guild - no leaders of the anti-union effort were laid off.

As long as there is any confusion in what motivates those subjected to your layoffs -- union activities or realistic and unavoidable economic measures, impartially applied -- your layoffs, your motives and your news-cutting priorities will remain in doubt. The solution is not to eliminate layoffs, necessarily, but to quickly negotiate a fair contract with your employees and then involve them in the decision-making process in determining your journalistic priorities.

This issue is important to me because without democracy in the workplace, there is no democracy, period. Workers have a basic human right of association and organization, in every workplace, in every corner of the globe.

As a freelancer and co-founder of an online media non-profit, I know first hand the struggle of surviving in this field, especially now, when the profession is in flux and so many journalists are feeling the effects of downsized newsrooms, closed bureaus, and dwindling freelancer budgets. Media workers guilds are a great way to ensure that the people that uphold our fourth estate and strive to inform our democracy are protected and appreciated!

Well , obviously if workers are getting just compensation for their endeavors it means we all as a society benefit. They will be able to service the community to the best of their ability.

Good journalists are essential to getting unbiased information to the public. They must be free to have a real say in their work and this will only be possible if they are free to organize themselves without restrictions,

I know not whence it comes, whether from the newspaper ownership, editorial direction, or the desire of reporters (I hesitate to use the term "journalists"), or simply pandering to a presumably non-critical public, but the quality of meaningful, relevant coverage on social, environmental, financial and POLITICAL issues has "gone to hell". I have been recently distressed to read what is the current definition of "journalism", that seems to negate research before writing and publication in favor of the non-substantive "quick bite" approach. If support of the guild would help accomplish good reportage, then I am there.

Simply stated, Democracy in journalism is important to all. In addition, integrity needs to be trusted and respected.

Good journalism is a cornerstone of a successful democracy. Good journalists are a cornerstone of good journalism. Finding, hiring and retaining good journalists is a process aided and enhanced by a strong, responsible worker's guild.

The workers have spoken and elected to be represented by the Union. I will be watching very carefully the bargaining. My expectation is simple, Bay Area News Group, bargain in good faith.

I have subscribed to a CC Times newspaper for seven years. I want to see my BANG-East Bay's reporters and other newsroom employees to be treated with dignity and respect on the job. I believe that a union, while an imperfect solution, is the best solution to ensuring that outcome. BANG-East Bay needs to stop wasting the money of its subscribers and its advertisers on costly anti-union consultants, recognize the right of employees to speak with a collective voice, and work with the Guild to deliver quality news to the papers' and websites' readers!

I'm a subscriber who receives the Contra Costa Times. I also work for a labor union and believe in workers' right to organize and bargain for their working conditions. Organizing for common benefit is a cornerstone of American democracy, not a race to the bottom for cheap labor without benefits. Corporate greed must be countered by working people and voters! You have my whole-hearted support as a subscriber, a voter, and a union member myself.

I am a public school teacher in Oakland and have relied heavily on Katy Murphy's coverage of changes in the school district and the larger community. I also need to know about the changes in the neighborhoods where I teach so I can respond accordingly with students and parents. USA Today cannot give me that coverage -- only a local paper can.

Any business who treats their employees with dignity and respect should not fear it's workers organizing to have a unified voice in expressing concerns about their work environment.

Of all people, newspaper employees need to be organized to protect their rights, and to protect their right to protect others by reporting on workplace abuses.

A well respected press operation requires employees who can think without being intimidated by the employer. Unions protect workers from the abuses of employers.
