A petition asking for legislation restoring the tribal rights of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe; rectifying a century and a half of loss and suffering; and responding to AJR 39 - a joint resolution from the State of California calling for restoration of tribal status.
We, the undersigned, support the Winnemem Wintu struggle for justice. The California Legislature passed AJR 39, a joint resolution memorializing Congress to restore recognition to the Winnemem Wintu Tribe. The next step to correct an historic wrong now goes to the Federal level. We ask that you, as Senators representing California, sponsor and support a bill for the restoration of the Winnemem Wintu tribe. Change the message relayed in 1852 which refused to honor the treaty this tribe signed, in peace and friendship, by restoring the basic human rights they have been fighting for over the past 156 years.
As a tribe long known to the government of the State and in Washington DC, it is time that they receive the help promised in their treaty and as a result of the CVP Indian Land Acquisition Act of 1941
We thank you for your attention to this important Human Rights issue, and look forward to supporting the bill you send forward on behalf of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe.

It is time to support, instead of disregard our fellow Americans who lived with this land long before us. Help end the shameful treatment of Native Americans in the past. The time is now. We voted you in for change.

I was at the thanksgiving ceremony on Mt Shasta. It was greatly appreciated that the centuries of genocide and racism was being compensated to a small extent. To not recognize these tribes' lawful treaties is a disgrace on the current government.

Please encourage the new director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs to investigate the federal removal of Winnemem Wintu tribal rights and to lead the government in restoring to these people what has been taken from them.

Support this worthy effort! Bring back the Wintu! And, expand the status of tribal sovereignty. Tribes deserve the same form of 'universal self-determination' as other nations in the world; Not Limited but Full Sovereignty.

I believe that the restoration in due, also the Wintu have very strong cultural ties to the land. They can produce change for their tribe in education for the future. Also with the their ideas and reintroduction of chinook salmon would help put life back in the river where the spawninghasn't taken place in the region for a long time. I pray to the ancestors to help reclaim a spritual place during this time of trials and hope the letter reaches you in a well way.

Dear Senator Boxer, I am a third grade teacher at Mt. Shasta Elementary School. Our social studies curriculum covers our local indigenous people, their careful use of the natural resources, and the changes that impacted their way of life. We continue studying how our town was settled by gold seekers and trappers, many of whom misused the local resources, believing that there was an unending supply of beaver, salmon, and trees. It is time that the Wintu people be recognized as a tribe and that all rights be restored to them. We must do everything we can to rectify the loss and suffering of our indigenous people in this country. Please vote for tribal recognition of the Wintu people. Thank you for your time.
