Support Stem Cell Research for Healthier Beverages

  • by: Concerned Individuals

Recently, Pepsi Co. has come under fire from pro-life activist organizations for sponsoring the research of biotech company Senomyx Inc., which uses stem cells from line HEK 293 to research taste and olfaction. Pepsi Co. is funding Semonyx with the hope of developing a healthier soda in the next few years: eliminating all that excess sugar by replacing it with biotech products that act as agonists on tastebud receptors, tricking the body into tasting sweetness.

Despite the ethically acceptable and noncontroversial nature of this research, a pro-life activist looking through biotech patents saw that Semonyx is using embryonically-derived stem cells, and has launched a boycott of Pepsi Co., a ridiculous action against a company which is spending millions of dollars trying to make its product healthier for consumers when most producers of soft drinks are perfectly comfortable using high fructose corn syrup. While Pepsi Co. is standing by Semonyx Inc. against the smear campaign launched by a coalition of pro-life activism organizations, Campbell Soup Company has caved into the pressure and lends credence to their ridiculous distortion of facts by severing their relationship with Semonyx Inc.

We, the undersigned, express our support for this valuable research which will directly result in much healthier soft drinks, and express our opposition to anyone who would attempt to harm a company through boycott due to their noble support of scientific research.
