Tampa Bay Downs Not So

Tampa Bay Downs Not So "Horse or Rescue Friendly?"

Target:
Tampa Bay Downs VP of Racing,

We have learned that there are two problems with Tampa Bay Downs. One, the DO NOT partake in the Jockey Clubs Voluntary Injury Reporting System (what are they trying to hide?) NOR do they "work well with others" when it comes to race horse rescue.
Several times rescuers have called this track in effort to help with the rehoming and/or retirement of some of the "unwanted" racehorses,...but that the calls have gone unanswered.

Tell Tampa Bay Downs to start participating in the Injury Reporting System and to open their doors to the rescues who want to help save off-track thoroughbred from slaughter.

Thanks!

Below is a link to Tampa Bay Downs General Mailbox. Here you can leave them a message to tell them what you think of them being "OK" with racehorse slaughter and for allowing the meatman onto the track to pick up the industry "unwanteds" to take them to slaughter for the owners and trainers;

SHAME on those who turn a blind eye and pretend that it aint happening or that its "ok." Equine slaughter IS NEVER ok, particularly for our American Racehorse Athletes where "Industry Accountability" is a factor of concern.

This is absolutely horrible!!! I've been doing some research on the race horse industry and how slaughter is an acceptable end to these horses according to you, the owners. Shame on you! You bred these horses or you bought these horses so they could make you money or bring you prestige. Now it's time to be responsible and find them homes if you can't keep taking care of them. Slaughter IS NOT ACCEPTABLE! Please stop overbreeding! I will not support your industry.

The horses make the owners a lot of money and that money should take care of the horse.

I don't beleave this is going on and know one is able to do anything about it. You would think that there would be some kind of regulations if they want to run a race track. I won't be going to the track anymore to support this kind of conduct.

In response to the Not Named post of Jan 25th, I would like people to be aware of the fact that Tampa Bay Downs' no-tolerance policy barring owners and trainers who send thoroughbreds to slaughter is an unwritten policy, unlike those of Gulfstream Park and Calder and 13 or so other racetracks across the nation including Churchill Downs. Margo Flynn, spokeswoman for Tampa Bay Downs has stated “Unfortunately, it’s a hard thing to trace. Ultimately, the track is not responsible for the horses’ well-being. All we do is to provide a venue to race.” I believe they are obligated to provide more than that. If Churchill Downs is managing to track it maybe Tampa Bay Downs should take some time to find out what their procedures are. Also, why is their policy "unwritten" when the other subsribing tracks have a formal written policy in effect. The sentiment is still that Tampa Bay Downs considers the profit they make off the backs of the horses that run on their track far more important than the welfare of the horses themselves. It's just another example of people exploiting that which has no defense of its own. Are we stewards of this planet or plunders of it? Tampa Bay Downs needs to either get onboard or get boycotted? As for me, I will never set foot in their facility.

These animals give you all they got every day. How can you feel good about being the ones to end their lives if they don't perform to your expectations? They can be used in other wonderful ways and touch peoples lives. If there are people out there to give them good homes, why not? Show some heart and do the right thing!

I think it's important for you to know that Tampa Bay Downs actualli IS a voluntary subscriber to the National Injury Reporting Database, and that the track also donates a large amount of money to the Grayson Jockey Club Research Foundation as well as the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and the Florida Thoroughbred charities. Check it out: http://www.tampabaydowns.com/TampaBayDownsSupportedCharities.aspx Thanks

They are brought into this world to run and make $ for their owners - when their race days are over they deserve better than to be served on someone's plate. If you don't rescue - don't breed!!

Please, please, please do everything you can to make TBD a friendly place for race horses that risk their lives for our pleasure. One horse lost to horse slaughter is one too many! Not reporting breakdowns at the track only hides ways the track can become safer. TBD is a beautiful facility and one that I enjoy visiting. But the lack of concern for its horses is frightening! Thank you, C. Wallen

My question is would the President of Tampa Downs put her injured horse on the meat wagon so it would end up in her dog's food bowl? Probably would....

"NOR do they "work well with others" when it comes to race horse rescue." All this track cares about is the $. The horses' welfare is the last thing on their minds. GET IN GEAR, TBD and help these beautiful creatures find homes. ANSWER THE PHONE!

This is animal crulety and it should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Wonder what people would say if the trainers and owners that allow this to happen were treated in the same manner. I bet they would be finding some nice green pastures for there horses to live out the rest of there days.

A once great race horse with no one at his side, perhaps it would be better if he just laid down and died. The horse is one of the most beautiful and complex animals. Stop killing them!

This is disgusting and we must stop it. Please everyone do something and let’s stop this slaughter.. These people shouldn’t even be allowed to have children or spouses, they’re sick in the head… Put them in Jail or I will take action forever until some of them are punished and the Horses are taken out of the industry completely. This Horse Racing Should Not Be Happening Anymore!!! Please Help!!

Please do not kill those who can no longer "serve" you. Give them a new life with someone else. Every killing will come back to you somehow.
