Restrict Hot Tar Roof Applications

Restrict Hot Tar Roof Applications

Target:
Law Makers

I, the undersigned, object to the unrestricted, legal exposure to toxic fumes from hot asphalt roofing tar. The application of roofing tar generates airborne chemicals (PAHs) and particles (PM 2.5) that are known to cause acute to chronic health problems, such as nose, throat, and lung irritation, asthma, emphysema, heart problems, damage to vital organs, and even cancer. Symtoms may be mild to severe and may start within minutes of exposure to fumes. Some citizens have reported symptoms such as sores in the nose, coughs, scratchy throats, headaches, flu-like symptoms, nausea, lung related illnesses such as lung infections, reactive airway disease, and asthma symptoms. We demand that restrictions to this product concerning timing, frequency and duration of application(s), be implemented on or near schools and in residential areas. Conventional asphalt roofing applications should only be allowed with the use of an asphalt kettle utilizing an afterburner, low fuming asphalt, and when all other BEST practices can be followed completely. In addition, we demand that there be a warning system in place before hot tar roofing applications, especially for sensitive groups in the surrounding area, that includes information about the product, possible side effects, what agency to call in case of emergency, how to make a complaint, and/or to report health related symptoms. We want a progression towards the use of existing alternative roofing materials that are not harmful to our environment, our health, and the health of our children. www.myspace.com/nomoretarroofs

The school that I teach at is replacing the existing roof, this was supposed to take place over the summer. However, this is happening now while teachers and students are in the building. Not only is is a load ordeal, but the fumes and smell are making the students/teachers very ill with coughing, headaches, fatigue, and slight fevers.

I myself have experienced these symptoms while eating lunch in the courtyard at my school.

This type of work should not be allowed near schools or in our neighborhoods. There are much better ways for these roofs to be repaired.

A close friend, her family - and many of her neighbors were made very ill due to this extremely toxic roofing application which is done routinely in her neighborhood and community. People have the RIGHT TO KNOW how things in the environment affect them, or harm them. The government is not doing a good enough job at regulating or enforcing regulations, so we as the people need to campaign for and demand a safer and healthier environment. Most people don't question or think about issues like this, until one day something makes them or their family ill. Then, they start to think and explore -and sometimes it's too late. Also, one more thing to think about, chemicals have the ability to alter/mutate DNA and then we pass those mutations on to our offspring. Google this for more scientific proof. Please sign this petition.

I became ill when I was exposed to asphalt roofing tar in my neighborhood. I had sores in my nose, a persistant cough that made it hard to breathe and senstive lungs for months after my last exposure. There are no laws to protect people from exposure to these fumes and there are no laws to retrict how often or for how long one can be exposed. This needs to change.
