New President Elect, Barack Obama and his Neww Adminstration

We have a new commander and chief, one with school age children. Where will you get better teachers from and who will bankroll their master teacher status?  What about all the good teachers that America already has? Who and when will they get relief? The United States Department of Education with the support of Congress will only forgive teachers loans after 1998, if they paid off all loans prior to October 1998. That means fellow teachers if you have loans after October 1998 you will not be allowed to get your loans forgiven. Many of you are very distressed by this finding. I am a teacher. I am a highly qualified teacher with a master's in special education. I have been teaching 15 years. Recently, I found out that I am not eligible for the government loan forgiveness program because I have loans before October 1998. I was shocked. I was told by the government and by the university that I went to that if I taught in a teacher shortage area my loans would be forgiven. So on that note, I am asking that you contact me here at Care 2. Let me know if you find yourself in this very devastating position. It's time to stand up and be counted. We want our loans forgiven. Congress forgives physicians loans and we teach doctors. We work hard. We are overworked, underpaid and unappreciated. Obama remeber your promises thousand of teachers supported you it is time to do the right thing, tell congress to forgive our loans we are long suffering.

I am a mathematics teacher in a title 1 school for the past 12 years. I feel that i am being robbed of 17,000 because of the timing of my education. I am dedicated and showed be helped for working in a title 1 school.

I am a middle school counselor at a Title 1 school in rural Oklahoma. I am also a single mother of two children. This is my fifth year of service as school counselor, and because my school is classified as Title 1, I had been under the assumption that I would be eligible for forgiveness of some of my student loans. I recently researched the criteria for forgiveness in anticipation of this wonderful blessing and realized I would not be eligible. I began my college education in 1993 and took out my first student loan prior to 1998. I would like to be afforded the same consideration as my peers who are perhaps younger than I or began college later in life. Please help me and the multitude of others in my position by lifting the time frame restriction on student loan forgiveness for teachers who are serving in economically disadvantaged areas like myself.

I have more than $19,000 in student loan debt to obtain a multiple subject teaching credential in the state of California. I have no prospects of obtaining a position anytime soon with the continual layoffs. Student loans need to be forgiven for all teachers, regardless of current placement, when they accumulated the loan debt, etc. Thank you for your time!

I am a teacher working in a rural Appalachian mountain school. I recently was offered a teaching job in town very close to my home which I turned down. I drive dangerous mountain roads with steep drop offs everyday because there is such an amazing need in these mountain schools. I carry a student loan and just the wear and tear plus the gas on my vehicle are almost beyond our budget, some relief with my student loan would further encourage my to stay at my present location. Thank you.

Teachers are underpaid and, I believe, they are the only public employees who do not get paid overtime. My daughter is a high school teacher, has a 2 year old and a 6 month old baby, and she has to work until 11pm tonight at the HS football game with no additional pay. She also has student loans which do not fall under your new "forgiveness" rules. Her pay was reduced this school year because of California's furlough days for state employees and because the governor reversed their pay increase % for this school year. In addition, her health insurance premium increased by 12%. Where is the relief for her and her family?

I think ALL teachers should get a loan forgiveness regardless if they are teaching in low poverty school or not. All teachers struggle with the same overwhelming loans while being underpaid and overworked.

I have taught only in low economic school settings primarily English as a Second Language. I have been a highly qualified teacher for 10 years who took out loans before 1998. Why are we being penalized for teacher forgiveness programs based on a year. We need help repaying our loans. We need to be able to have our loans forgiven so we can take care of our children's college. Why can't all teachers have loans forgiven since we are teaching tomorrow's future leaders. Why must we be crushed by debt as we establish and grow young minds, working tirelessly into the night grading papers and planning? Why must we not have our loans forgiven? I need help to pay for my loans. Please change this legislation!

Thank you for creating this petition! Finally I can stand together with other highly qualified teachers to protest the unfair requirements of the Teacher Loan Forgiveness legislation. I have taught in the Math Department at a Title I school for over five years although I cannot have my loan forgiven because I received it in 1994, a few years before this legislation allows. Why does the federal government value me less than a new teacher? My school and community values the work I've done over the last five years. I was even recognized as an "outstanding educator" by the Jump$tart Coalition. I'm signing this petition in the hopes that congress will correct the unfair requirements of the Teacher Loan Forgiveness legislation by extending the dates by which a teacher qualifies.

I've been teaching for 14 years in a low income area, and I wouldn't change schools for the world. The children are needy, but most of all they need me. I am struggling keep my head above water during these times, while still trying to pay off student loans from 1993. I stand behind my president. Please stand behind your teachers by offering loan forgiveness for teachers that have been in the practice and remain committed.

My student loan is thirty years old. I pay seven hundred dollars a month! It appears that I never fit into a nice category to qualify for student loan forgiveness. I've taught for over fifteen years in special and general education. I'm a retired military spouse with a twenty-six year old mentally challenged son. I would love to be in a position to help my youngest son pay for his college education...but, I cannot. Now, the Sloans have two generations of student debt!

I really would love to speak with the Obama Administration and explain my circumstance. It is important for President Obama to address this issue very soon. Please help veteran teachers as myself and find a way to lift this insurmountable burden from our lives.

I have a Master's Degree in Learning Disabilities and teach Reading Remediation and Special Education in a Title 1 school, in a teacher shortage area. Because my student loans were taken out before October 1998, I have been told I am not eligible for loan forgiveness. My loan is currently $40,000.00. I now pay $400.00 a month and will be retiring from teaching in 3 years. At that time, I will be 62 years old, living on teacher's retirement (if the retirement system in my state is not bankrupt by then), and Social Security. President Obama, I am one of many teachers who are facing the same financial hardship that paying student loans after retirement will ensure. You have offered financial help to many, but teachers are once again overlooked. Please address the financial crisis many teachers face and forgive our student loans. We teach. Doesn't that alone elicit some attention from you, and a solution as soon as possible?

I received my first student loan in 1997 and am teaching Special Education in a title 1 school. I don't want to miss out on the $17,000 in forgiveness. I work just as hard as any of those other teachers!!!! Please change the law.

I guess we will see who gets voted for in the future!!!!

Teachers have been greatly impacted by the NCLB Act. As dedicated individuals, we still comply with all the policies that have been implemented. However, it is disheartening to see numerous bail outs for companies, when we teachers, that are already grossly underpaid for the services that we provide, cannot receive loan forgiveness simply because we have a loan that has been received prior to October 1998. To make matters worse, despite us being undervalued, many of us are facing furloughs which will take from an already deficient salary. I implore any and all policymakers to institute a policy or program to assist teachers during the current economic crisis.

Please institute a Teacher Student Loan forgiveness program for all teachers. Student loans are difficult to pay off, especially the commercial loans that compound interest daily. All teachers should be included in the program. It is expensive to continue our own education so we can continue to teach the students at our best and most informed.

My wife and I are both teachers, both highly qualified, both with master's degrees, both with student loans. Our student loan payments eat a significant portion of our monthly paychecks as we both put ourselves through undergrad and grad school. It seems ridiculous that neither of us can benefit from any loan forgiveness because we missed the deadlines by a few years. HELP US OUT PLEASE!

Dear Mr. President, Please work with Congress to allow ALL teachers who work in critical shortage areas to receive loan forgiveness for their dedicated service, even if their loans were acquired prior to October 1998. I work in a Title 1 school with a 95% poverty rate. We are rural and our teacher salaries are considerably less than some other coastal communities in Florida. I still pay monthly on my student loan. I still serve a school that is in critical need. Please encourage our Democratic led Congress to allow all teachers the minimum $5,000. Loan Forgiveness for approved service, regardless of the loan inception. Please help us.
