Tell China Not To Import Roo Meat
Australia bears the shame of being responsible for the largest commercial wildlife slaughter in the world. And we urgently need your help to stop it from getting even bigger.
Each night in the Australian outback thousands of kangaroos graze peacefully, stand up on hearing an approaching vehicle, stare into a blinding spotlight, and are shot for their meat and skins. This year, almost 4 million kangaroos are allowed to be killed commercially. The fate of orphaned young is at least as grim. Joeys are decapitated or killed with a blow to the head. If they escape, they often fall victim to predators, exposure, starvation or severe blood loss.
A new trade protocol between Australia and China now opens the door for the industry to export kangaroo meat and skins to China. But the Chinese are worried about their reputation as they are well aware of the iconic status of roos. Also, worries exist about food safety issues after Russia announced a total ban on importing roo meat for this reason (the good news!).
Please, if you have a minute to spare, sign this petition - for "The kangaroo is one of Australia's original inhabitants, deserving both respect and compassion." (Sir Paul McCartney)
We, the undersigned, find the potentiality of this trade agreement both disturbing and one lacking merit. I hope that China makes the responsible and ethical decision to exclude itself from the kangaroo import business. I am confident you will realize that sacrificing safety for economy is not only dangerous, it is inevitably costly. It is also imperative to understand that kangaroo numbers are not highly disproportionate relative to surrounding species, and engaging in business decisions based on compromised data is both irresponsible and dishonest. Furthermore, and most importantly, as sentient beings capable of discomfort, love, pain, and suffering, kangaroos should be protected from exploitation, and we urge China to refrain from capitalizing on one of Australia's most cherished icons.
Thank-you for your time.
