Tell Costco to stop using plastic to package fruit

Target:
Costco
Sponsored by:

Some time ago Costco changed the paper dividers to plastic packaging.  Millions of these plastic dividers are leaving the store every day.  They end up in the landfill because either they are not recyclable in the municipality or people don't know or don't care what happens to them.

Costco takes good care of their employees and is a great company.   Help them do become an even better company by signing this petition and letting them know you care! Their leverage in the market place is huge and if they wanted to force their suppliers to use only environmentally-safe and recylable packaging they could.

We the undersigned ask that your stores stop using plastic dividers for your fruit.  You have used paper in the past which was recyclable in every municipality.

These plastic dividers end up in the landfill and often go to other poor countries to be burned.

Costco started in Seattle where recycling is a given and it would be great if the company took a stand and became an example as an environmentally friendly corporation.  The company buys so much fruit, it has the leverage to demand environmentally safe packaging.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to our concern.

Costco does a great job in so many areas, but the plastics used in produce packaging are just inexcusable. It has had a dramatic impact on our Costco purchasing. It's not enough to move to biodegradable packaging, which only stays out of landfills if it really IS recycled/composted and still takes resources to produce, but to reduce the amount of packaging overall.

Hi everybody, I think Costco has done well to change form paper to plastic dividers. But, they need to make the plastic degradable (see www.biodeg.org website). This is done by including d2w additive at the manufacturing stage and the plastic will then self-destruct leaving no fragments, no methane, no heavy metals and no harmful residues!

To Whom It May Concern: I do not understand why your apples need to be packaged in such wasteful plastic. As a customer, I would much rather buy them without the packaging. Please consider the way this impacts our environment. I would love to see you get rid of the plastic packaging for fruit. Thank you!

Costco Should not package fruit in plastic containers. They should use recycled paper packing or a renewable non-tree based packaging.

If Costco needs to use plastics, why don't they use plastics with oxo-biodegradable additives in it? Then they won't be junking the planet up with stuff that lasts a thousand years. Oxo-biodegradable additives turn an otherwise useless byproduct, naphtha, into humus. See http://biogreenproducts.biz for more information on oxo-biodegradable plastics.

We need to use less plastic in all packaging - especially with foods!!! Please change to a biodegradeable material for your products, both food and non-food. Every time I have gone into Costco for last few months, I have looked at the apples gleaming in plastic packaging. They may look great, but I just won't buy them knowing that I am supporting more plastic being discarded and thrown into the landfill. Thank you.

To Whom It May Concern, I appreciate that Costco is concerned about protecting their fruit from damage by packaging it in these plastic dividers. I know they work well against bruising, but I can't bring myself to buy the fruit because the packaging is not recyclable. So many of us are concerned about reducing the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills, on our streets and in our oceans. Please consider a more environmentally friendly packaging. Perhaps you could return to the paper packaging you once used. Thank you for your time, Jennifer Olivarez

Hi, Each time I go into a Costco, I notice the excessive plastic packaging on almost all of the products, be it produce, household goods, or personal care products. This is not environmentally sustainable in the long run, and buying in bulk should not mean two or three small products bundled together with more packaging. I hope to see larger packages, less plastic, and more environmentally-safe options in the very near future.

Why do we need plastic to cover up everything? Stop the plastic!

I purchase many, many items at Costco every month. In fact, I make a point of patronizing Costco because I believe in your business policies as well as in the policy of saving money by buying in bulk. I am thrilled that you offer so many organic products, and I sing Costco's praises at every opportunity. But I join many others in being deeply disappointed at the amount of unnecessary plastic packaging at Costco. I urge you to unpack the plastic from your fruit and vegetables, and wherever else possible, to add care for your planet and the health of its residents to the care you show in so many other ways.

I also won't buy apples that are packaged in plastic on the principle of shunning wasteful and environmentally costly practices. I would also urge you to stop packaging small computer peripherals (Ipods, thumbdrives, memory cards, etc) in large clamshells. There are lots of people like us who do not want to buy all the extra plastic. A cardboard box is perfectly adequate. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I really like shopping at Costco, but I have been disappointed by the unnecessary use of plastic to package products. This extra plastic is largely unnecessary and ends up in landfills. Lately I have begun to question whether I will continue to shop at Costco because, even though I save money, I also consume a LOT of unnecessary packaging materials that I can avoid when shopping at the grocery store. I would love to see Costco use recycled materials to package products, or use products such as cardboard that can be recycled. If Costco begins to decrease the amount of non-recyclable plastic packaging used, I will be more likely to shop there. Thank you for your consideration.

Hello! I like to support costco but am concerned with the unnecessary level of plastic packaging used by the store. Please change the apple dividers from plastic to cardboard so that they can be recycled. Any other plastic reductions you can make will certainly be financially supported by both myself and my friends, as we choose costco over other stores, knowing our purchases will have a less negative impact on the ecosystem.
