Tell Disney to Use Green Cleaners!

Target:
Jerry MontgomerySenior Vice PresidentConservation & Environmental Sustainability

It has been two years since The Center for Health, Environment and Justice launched its Disney Go Green! campaign. Since day one, we have been asking The Walt Disney Company to create a Green Cleaning Purchasing Policy for all Disney World parks, hotels and restaurants, phase in safer certified green cleaners within one year, and use only staff trained in green cleaning procedures to ensure their proper use. The Walt Disney Company understands the life of a child better than any other company, but has yet to take the important steps of eliminating toxic cleaning products from its Disney World parks, hotels and restaurants, like it has in Animal Kingdom to protect its animals.

Despite appearing to be just small adults, children are not. They consume more calories, drink more water, and breathe more air than adults and therefore they take in more harmful substances. Children are curious. They possess a natural curiosity, have a tendency to explore, and have an inclination to put their hands in their mouths that often expose them to health risks that adults generally avoid.

In May of 2008, The Walt Disney Company officially received designation for all of its 24 Florida hotels and resorts for the Florida Green Lodging Program. This state run program was started in 2004 by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as a way to protect Florida’s natural resources. As our country and world face the devastating impacts of global climate change, significant steps to increase energy efficiency and decrease the emission of greenhouse gases should be applauded. And we here at the Center for Health Environment and Justice want to congratulate The Walt Disney Company for taking a serious look at the world’s climate crisis and the dire impacts it has on the citizens of Florida.

The Florida Green Lodging Program does not make it mandatory to eliminate toxic cleaning products and by not having a Green Cleaning Purchasing Policy, Disney World continues to expose its youngest guests to toxic cleaning products.

So help us tell Disney to eliminate those toxic cleaning products and we don’t have to just imagine a more perfect world, we can see it!

Take Action Now!

Who Put Goofy in Charge of Purchasing?

Recently, the Center for Health, Environment and Justice found that Disney World uses 12 certified green products, and over 80 very toxic cleaners. So what’s the deal? Animals’ sensitivities to chemicals have them avoiding toxics in their Animal Kingdom theme park. Apparenlty green cleaners are for the birds (and the lions and the tigers and the bears - oh my!) But then where are the toxic cleaners used? They are used where visiting children bathe, eat and play.

Now is the time to call on Disney World to Go Green! Community groups in Florida are joining together to move Disney towards safer cleaning products, but you can get involved! Disney cares most about impressing its visitors!

Get Goofy to Smarten Up! Here's how you can help:

Take these few steps to make Disney take one great leap - switching to green cleaning products and procedures and becoming a leader in the hotel and tourism industries!

Tell Disney to Use Green Cleaners!

We need your help to convince Disney to do the right thing and switch the rest of their parks and hotels to certified green cleaning products and procedures.

Send a Letter to Disney Today!
I am deeply concerned with growing evidence that toxic chemicals in everyday products are contributing to serious illnesses in children.

In Disney's Animal Kingdom, unnecessary toxic cleaning products that would harm the animals are banned. However, those same products are used around children in your parks, restaurants and hotels. Disney understands the health risks of unnecessary toxic cleaning products, and knows how to successfully use green cleaners.

Please transition all your parks, hotels, and restaurants to certified green cleaning products and procedures this year.

By making this simple change, you will protect visiting children's health, and become a true environmental and health leader in the tourism industry.

Please do the right thing here. Green cleaners work just as well and there is no need to add toxins to our environment and cause diseases in people. I only support businesses who make a great effort to change for the positive. This is a little, but important effort for a multi-million/billion dollar company.

We recently had a trip to Disney and were staying at the Swan hotel. We were told at the desk that Disney is going green and to return our room cards so that they can be recycled. We were happy to do this but dissappointed to find no recycle bins in the rooms.

WALT DISNEY WAS ALWAYS ABOUT THE WELFARE OF PEOPLE,OUR WORLD, AND ENVIRONMENT. HE PUT PEOPLE FIRST! SHOWING TIME AND TIME AGAIN HIS SINCERITY. WALT DISNEY COMPANY UNDERSTANDS THE LIFE OF A CHILD BETTER THAN ANY OTHER COMPANY, BUT HAS YET TO TAKE THE IMPORTANT STEPS OF ELINIMATING TOXIC CLEANING PRODUCTS FROM ITS DISNEY WORLD PARKS, HOTELS, AND RESTAURANTS, LIKE IT HAS IN ANIMAL KINGDOM TO PROTECT ITS ANIMALS. IT IS TIME TO RID DISNEY OF THE TOXIC CLEANING PRODUCTS IT USES. AND TO GO GREEN! WE OWE IT TO OUR CHILDREN AND FUTURE GENERATIONS, TO TEACH AND LEAD BY EXAMPLE! THANK YOU
