Gov. Strickland: Review the case of Lucasville prisoners

Gov. Strickland: Review the case of Lucasville prisoners

Target:
Ohio Governor Ted Strickland
Following the April 1993 disturbance at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, five men were sentenced to death and many others to long terms of imprisonment for what was alleged to be their roles.

Prosecutors concede that there was very little evidence and convictions were based mostly on the testimony of prison informants.

Some informants, who do not dispute that they took part in assaults and murders at Lucasville, have been paroled, because of their testimony.

Many of those convicted, as a result of the April 1993 events at Lucasville, have been in solitary confinement for almost 15 years.

Therefore, the undersigned ask Governor Strickland to appoint a Special Commission to investigate the Lucasville uprising.

The following ask you to consider the death sentences and extended sentences of those involved in the Lucasville Prison disturbance by appointing an independent commission.

The evidence for their alleged malfeasance is spurious at best.  The informants, who created the majority of the case, benefited greatly from their testimony.  This causes doubt in the citizens of this state, country and world.  An independent commission could ensure justice is applied to this very special circumstance, and by these means, restore faith in our systems for punishing wrongdoing.

The star witness has recanted his testimony in two separate affidavits, and has admitted the State coerced him to lie in order to secure the conviction.

In a world of modernisation and freedom of expressions and beliefs, if one man's voice is silenced then the basic goals of empowerment and democracy would have failed, failed miserably. Every man deserves a fair trial What about innocent until proven guilty? I prefer to think that these days we have adopted "guilty until proven innocent" How many innocent people have been wrongfully incarcerated?...years gone that can never be replaced, social scarring, psychological battering... Please give them a fair trial and let their voices be heard.

Please, also, let these people out of solitary confinement. I thought it was illegal to put people in solitary confinement for an extended period? It is cruel beyond belief and totally unacceptable. Please also investigate this incident and ask why self confessed criminals are given prescendence over the ones they have incriminated and whether or not their testimony, in view of the reward, can be relied upon.

The rampant racism and injustice in the court systems must be fixed. It is not just in relation to the death penalty but in all areas of judicial and legislative measures. From prison sentencing to predatory lending and unequal housing, blacks, latinos, and even poor whites are often the victims. I think the quote says it best: "Those without capital get the punishment!"

Hello. From what I've heard, and in the interest of justice, the circumstances involving the prison riot are worthy of review. Yours truly, Steven Paris

Responsibilty and accountability - have we lost the true nature of these values? Are we so busy and indifferent that we don't care who is to blame as long as it's not us? We need to stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves the most in this country. That is, after all, a core value of our country, even if we've forgotten about it. Do the right thing here. It may not always be the popular thing, but it is the right thing.

If Criminals are arresting and overseeing Criminals and they, themselves are not being held accountible, then why do we have incarceration for wrongdoings in the first place. What's good for some should be good for ALL. This government should be made to pay for their own criminal activities.

Given the unreliability of prison informants, and the lack of evidence, please re-consider the sentencing of the five men sentenced to death in the April 1993 disturbance at the Lucasville facility. The recent study on the inequity of sentencing and prison terms in the U.S. shows that we as a nation disgracefully lead the world in our prison population numbers and inappropriateness of sentencing. Please do what you can to reverse that inequity by addressing it in this case. Thank you.

Will you let solitary confinement of human beings continue when you can change this? You can do something about this. Don't have this on your conscious for the rest of your life and what Ohio will be remembered for.

After much reflection on this most important issue I believe these convictions were wrongly given and that those convicted deserve the appointment of a Special Commission to investigate the Lucasville uprising.

I have a loved one that is serving life without in Missouri. He was charged as an adult when he was a minor. He has currently served 17 years and is down to his last appeal. This man is not the same man he was then and deserves a second chance. Not only that, but had his attorney done his job properly, he would not be serving life without. I know my loved one is not the only one out there that deserves a second chance. We all need to bond together to make a change for them. They need our help!!! Let's make a difference for them and the future of others.

Having worked as a mental health counselor in a state prison I know of the corruption and coercion that goes on in the prison system. Justice must prevail. Solitary confinement is cruel and only leads to mental instability. You reap what you sow.
