Gov. Strickland: Review the case of Lucasville prisoners

Gov. Strickland: Review the case of Lucasville prisoners

Target:
Ohio Governor Ted Strickland
Following the April 1993 disturbance at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, five men were sentenced to death and many others to long terms of imprisonment for what was alleged to be their roles.

Prosecutors concede that there was very little evidence and convictions were based mostly on the testimony of prison informants.

Some informants, who do not dispute that they took part in assaults and murders at Lucasville, have been paroled, because of their testimony.

Many of those convicted, as a result of the April 1993 events at Lucasville, have been in solitary confinement for almost 15 years.

Therefore, the undersigned ask Governor Strickland to appoint a Special Commission to investigate the Lucasville uprising.

The following ask you to consider the death sentences and extended sentences of those involved in the Lucasville Prison disturbance by appointing an independent commission.

The evidence for their alleged malfeasance is spurious at best.  The informants, who created the majority of the case, benefited greatly from their testimony.  This causes doubt in the citizens of this state, country and world.  An independent commission could ensure justice is applied to this very special circumstance, and by these means, restore faith in our systems for punishing wrongdoing.

Given the unreliability of prison informants, and the lack of evidence, please re-consider the sentencing of the five men sentenced to death in the April 1993 disturbance at the Lucasville facility. The recent study on the inequity of sentencing and prison terms in the U.S. shows that we as a nation disgracefully lead the world in our prison population numbers and inappropriateness of sentencing. Please do what you can to reverse that inequity by addressing it in this case. Thank you.

There is way too much incarceration in the U.S.A. It is a money-making proposition in this country!

Will you let solitary confinement of human beings continue when you can change this? You can do something about this. Don't have this on your conscious for the rest of your life and what Ohio will be remembered for.

After much reflection on this most important issue I believe these convictions were wrongly given and that those convicted deserve the appointment of a Special Commission to investigate the Lucasville uprising.

I have a loved one that is serving life without in Missouri. He was charged as an adult when he was a minor. He has currently served 17 years and is down to his last appeal. This man is not the same man he was then and deserves a second chance. Not only that, but had his attorney done his job properly, he would not be serving life without. I know my loved one is not the only one out there that deserves a second chance. We all need to bond together to make a change for them. They need our help!!! Let's make a difference for them and the future of others.

Having worked as a mental health counselor in a state prison I know of the corruption and coercion that goes on in the prison system. Justice must prevail. Solitary confinement is cruel and only leads to mental instability. You reap what you sow.

It is only fair that it case be looked into individually, so that no innocent person is ever imprisoned.

Democracy needs fair justice, modern society need Democracy. A leading nation must be exemplary - inside AND outside own borders.
