Tell Puerto Rico to Stop Monkey-Breeding Facility

Bioculture, a company that sells primates to laboratories, plans to capture monkeys from their natural homes in Mauritius, imprison thousands of them in Puerto Rico, and sell their offspring for use in experiments in the U.S.

U.S. laboratories, which use more monkeys for experimentation and testing than do laboratories in any other nation, imprison tens of thousands of imported monkeys. These animals lead lives of deprivation, loneliness, pain, and misery.

Please send a polite e-mail to Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortu%uFFFDo and Rep. Pedro Pierluisi and his staff asking them to permanently put a stop to the construction of the Bioculture facility and any future monkey-breeding facilities. Let them know that Bioculture has proven itself to be a disreputable company and that allowing such cruelty to take root on Puerto Rico's shores will lower the commonwealth's international standing.

We the undersigned were shocked and dismayed to read that a primate supply company had begun to build a primate facility in Guayama, Puerto Rico. Such facilities sell primates to experimenters, who imprison these intelligent, social animals and use them in painful and often deadly experiments.

A Superior Court judge found serious problems with Bioculture's applications and permits and has halted further construction of the Bioculture facility. Puerto Rico's Senate Environmental Committee also found that Bioculture and the government did not properly address the detrimental impact that the project could have on local citizens as well as on their water supplies and land and concluded that it 'is not sensible' for Puerto Rico to support this devastating project.

We respectfully ask you to take action to stop the construction of such facilities permanently. If Puerto Rico allows this facility to be built, it will only serve to damage Puerto Rico's international standing. Please do whatever you can to prevent this cruelty.
