Tell the USDA: Killing animals should be a LAST resort!

The USDA recently admitted to killing thousands of birds in South Dakota

Bait laced with the poison DRC-1339 was given to the birds to kill them in order to alleviate health concerns for both the farm animals and workers. At least 2,000 birds were said to have consumed the poison. Though poisoning animals was not said to be a common method, there were no other methods said to have been used to repel the birds before resorting to poison.

Animals sometimes cause difficulty to human society, such extreme methods should be discouraged and should be a last resort.

Tell the USDA that many other methods should have been explored before resorting to the extermination of 2,000 living creatures.

We the undersigned are disturbed by the USDA's recent action regarding the poisoning of more than a thousand starlings in South Dakota. We were displeased to not hear of any alternative methods explored before resorting to exterminating the birds. Though we understand the risk posed by exposure to the waste that the birds produced, we do not agree with the action taken. We respectfully request that in the future, every possible action be taken before resorting to the extermination of so many animals. Though some individuals may view these creatures as "pests" because of their relationship with the birds, they are living creatures and their lives have value -- both in the ecosystem and in and of themselves.

As previously mentioned, though we're unaware of any other (non-lethal) actions taken to discourage the birds from affecting the feed, we hope that other actions were taken before exterminating them. We ask that in the future, you give consideration to the lives of the animals disturbing human activity or structures and try to discourage their actions using humane methods before resorting to lethal actions. It is important to remember that as we grow as a society, we are encroaching upon the natural habitats that previously belonged to these creatures alone. Now that we have that territory to share, we must to rise to our potential as human beings and use our strengths of intelligence and creativity to solve our problems in a humane way. Such methods will have a more positive impact on the very ecosystems that we call home, benefiting us as well as the animals.

Please consider our statements in depth -- both now and when coming across future problems of this nature.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
