STATEMENT OF SUPPORT FOR THE 2008 TENNESSEE BEVERAGE CONTAINER RECYCLING ACT
WHEREAS Tennessee's scenic, cultural and natural resources are part of the common trust, to be equally enjoyed and equally cared for by all; and
WHEREAS these resources are compromised by persistent, deliberate littering and the avoidable wasting of valuable materials; and
WHEREAS a 5-cent, refundable deposit on most beverages in glass, plastic and aluminum containers has been shown to significantly reduce littering and increase recycling, while providing numerous other benefits to communities, schools, manufacturers, local economies and the environment; and
WHEREAS the 3-cent handling fee assessed to beverage distributors allows for the redemptions to be done by independent redemption centers rather than grocery stores and other retailers; and
WHEREAS the recovered scrap is worth close to 3 cents per container, and most of it will be used to make new containers;
NOW THEREFORE we, the undersigned, support the proposed 2008 Tennessee %u201Cbottle bill%u201D sponsored by Sen. Doug Jackson (SB 1408), Rep. Mike Turner (HB 1829) and 13 bipartisan cosponsors.

Recycling is so easy and shows you care about the place you live. It also protects wildlife. They don't want litter in their environments either.

NY State, provided containers for people to use for recycling that was put out along with the garbage and made a big difference on recycling, the easier you make it for people, the more chance of them using it, rite now, having to drive somewhere to drop off your recycling (specially w/the price of gas) does not really promote recycling ")

TN needs to focus on the bigger picture. The Stop L*it*ter campaign is a good start. However, we should now accept our greater responsibility to our home and planet and take the proper steps to reduce overall waste.

We have a rampant litter problem, as well as horrible recyling rates as a state! Tennessee should be ashamed of itself!

I Just moved here from Connecticut, and i miss the 5 Cent back. More people will keep a bag of bottles to return instead of throwing them away if they think they are getting something back.

Bills that can reduce Tennessee Trash and help recycling efforts and give people who are entergetic enough to collect bottles and cans with a legal cash source is a good thing.

We paid 10 cents a bottle/can while on assignment in Michigan. Made the environment much cleaner! Let's do it!

This is a huge deal for Tennessee! We need to do all we can to get this bill passed!

We returned bottles in Michigan when I was a kid, except they actually gave 10 cents a bottle. However, I think 5 cents would definitely be incentive enough for people to think twice about throwing those bottles in the trash or on the ground.

My family and I have just moved to Rutherford county from New York state and I would say Rutherford county is an ideal place to live. Almost perfect except for the one simple fact that Tennessee does not have a state-wide mandated recycling program.

Remember the story about the boy who found thousands of starfish washed up on the beach who started throwing them back and the old man told him he couldn't make a difference? The boy replied he made a difference to each one he threw back. For the love of our planet, ourselves & children let's make a small effort to make a big difference.

The states I have visited that have a bottle bill, don't have litter. Clean roadways and more recycling sounds like a good idea to me.

I live in Queens County in New York City and we all have to recycle. Recycling is extremely important so we can have a better environment and conserve the natural resources we have. Everyone needs to recycle internationally so we can have a healthier planet!
