This is a look at the Tennis Court from the house at 1425 Holt Rd.

Tennis for the health of it!

Target:
Wake County and Apex officals
Sponsored by:
  • I need Wake County and Apex voters to sign this petition to allow Robert Allen Gibson to teach / tutor / film / and do statistical analysis for anyone in the USA on personal property at 1425 Holt Rd Cary, North Carolina 27519 for free/ for a fundraiser/ or for a fee.

Robert Allen Gibson and his mother Deloris Lea Gibson have built one of the most modern tennis courts in North Carolina and they need permission from the people to run a small home business on their personal property.

There is no home business category for a Tennis Instructor, because of the expense necessary to create a facility. Few could afford to do it. So it has never been addressed as a possible occupation.

All aspects of the business would qualify as a home business if it were not for the Tennis Court size. The tennis court is using less than .02 percent of the total property most home businesses are not alllowed to use more than 25% of the home. No one will be using the home for this business. There will be no retail business conducted on this property. A tennis Instructor, is a teacher, a coach, a trainer, a baby sitter/Day Care worker, a mentor, tutor, a life coach, a consultant. Working with 1 to 8 players at time. This site is designed to work with no more than 5 players at any time to comply with day care requirements and to reduce traffic patterns in the area. Players would come over for 1 to 2 hours max. less time than most babysitters sit for. They would play in the back yard just like in home  Day Care the kids go out for receation time. During that time the students would be doing their tennis homework of putting in some of their 8,000 hours to play college tennis or 10,000 hours to play Professionally. They would be tutored in the correct way to hit the ball with fewer injuries much like piano teachers or voice coaches. They would be filmed to get them use to the cameras, an to help them build a positive self image as well as to document their progression like a home photography business. In the industry 80% of the players travel to and from the tennis court with out using the restroom or showers, both of which are not provided for at the Gibson's home, but would be required on a rezoned business property. The property is in the county on residential well and septic thus a problem for providing public facilities. We do have an RV available if it would be acceptable.

As for the location of the tennis courts, they are as far away from any houses as they can be. The courts are built to comply with the 2025 usage plan  for the property. Over 300' away and completely surrounded by trees. No one can see the Gibson house or court from any street. Just about all tennis courts are built in residential neighborhoods and are closer to houses and businesses than this court is.

Sound tests were conducted that verified that the noise produced by the ball machine and tennis players is less at the boundaries of the property than any of the other noises in the neighborhood including Dogs, Birds, Kids, Squirrels, Cars, Lawn Mowing Services, Garbage Trucks, Planes and Builders in the area.

Lighting for the court is another concern. Robert would like to let as many people as possible to play on this amazing court but most players need a place after school and work hours. To see and react to a 100 mile per hour serve or to do frame by frame videos, 1000-watt bulbs are required. Apex only allows 250-watt bulbs. Lighting experts have shown that all the light will be directed directly to the court and with the shields attached, no one would see a bulb and have direct lighting leaving the property like porch or flood lights, not to mention all the trees that are blocking direct light paths.

Hours of operations were also addressed from 8:00am - 10:00pm lights being on 2 to 3 hours per night (maximum) if approved. The site would be accessed by appointment only, no drop in or private rentals. In addition, the site would always be closed on Sundays.

Tennis is a lifetime sport and it is one of the best sports for your health and the health and strength of future generations. With the work force getting older, I would like a job that will allow me to share my talents and knowledge with our community. My grandfather lived until he was 99 in the West Virginia Mountains and was moving rocks from one end of the garden to the other until his late 80's. I would like to be playing and working at tennis until my late 80's on my private tennis court. You can make that happen by signing this petition and supporting life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

If piano teachers are allowed to use their homes as studio's and photographers are allowed to use their residence for their profession, then why aren't athletes allowed to train at in home facilities? I understand the limitations of businesses that have large shipements etc. but I do not understand this limitation. With the shortage of training facilities in our area to meet the growing demand of young athletes, it seems rediculous to limit trainers from offering lessons on their property as long as they do not create a problem for surrounding residences.

Hopefully the City of Apex, and Wake County will use this opportunity to begin to intelligently evaluate how to apply rules and regulations meant to improve the community at large. By ignoring the immense value that Mr. Gibson brings to the community by providing outstanding instruction and facilities that are just not otherwise widely available, these elected/appointed officials can appear uninformed and inflexible. It is hard to argue that this "home business" would be disruptive or offensive in any way. An advanced, modern tennis court is already available on his large property. Instruction to 4 or 5 players would be extremely beneficial to those so instructed. It is impossible to argue that this business differs significantly from home day care - insofar as the basic business model involves educating/watching over a limited group of people in a home setting (as currently allowed by law). Mr. Gibson adequately addresses all concerns as to ancillary considerations as well (as per his statement concerning visibility, public restroom, lighting, noise). Please consider allowing Mr. Gibson the ability to use his talent and facilities to help train and educate our talented youth. There does not appear to be any significant reason not to do so, but innumerable reasons to allow it to occur...

The city of Apex should allow private instruction for tennis and other outdoor sports at the instructor's home in the same way that music instruction is allowed at a private home. Tennis is a wonderful sport that you can pursue your whole life. It increases flexibility, cardiovascular, and mental agility. These are the skills our young people (and not so young) need to fight the obesity and diabetes that is rampant in our youth. Robert Allen Gibson is a wonderful tennis instructor, who goes the extra mile to teach creatively, and also to support his community. Each year, until this year, he has organized an event around tennis to benefit local charities such as the Food Bank, Triangle Mended Little Hearts, and Junior Achievement. This year, he was looking forward to holding his event at his new tennis court at his home in the Apex planning district. Apex said NO. They also said he could not teach at his new court, which is on over 5 acres of land, zoned for residential use. A music teacher can teach in his/her home, but he cannot. This is unfair, and needs to be re-examined.

Tennis is one sport that is so accessible to kids today - for fun, for health, for life! Coach Gibson brings a level of training in the sport that is not available anywhere else in the triangle area. Please approve this petition without delay.

With more and more people working from home, some of the current rules and regulations having to do with home business may have to reviewed. It is okay to give music lessons, tutor, and sell bake goods from one's home, but not okay to give tennis lessons? I would think that we would want to promote physical activity considerig that there are concerns about obesity in today's society.

Let people do what they want on their own property. It will help kids grow and learn a skill they can use for the rest of their lives, remember when you were kids. I guess it wold be better that the kids stay home and play vedio game or did drugs or got in trouble, give them an outlet to do something productive. Quit being old and grouchy.

Tennis Instruction should be allowed to be categorized as a home business. Just as a personal trainer teaches clients individually or in groups, tennis instruction should be allowed the same privilege. With the technological advances in todays markets, the use of film and radar etc. for analysis to pinpoint a player's weaknesses and strengths are invaluable in the learning process. I wholeheartedly sign this petition.

The health benefits alone should be conducive to allowing this tennis business to thrive within the community. There are many people that wish to take tennis classes that are offered close to home. Having a tennis business within this community can only benefit the people's ability to have yet another option in keeping their health at their very best.

I can not see any reason this business should not be allowed to run in this community. In fact, it would be a great enhancement for the community. Having a professional tennis instructor within close range would be beneficial to the people. Tennis is a great sport and wonderful exercise for the mind, spirit and body.
