In the past year alone NYC DOT has installed over 90 new miles of bike lanes, more than ever before and more than nearly any other city in the U.S. Installing a lane doesn't just happen by magic. It takes a team of highly coordinated professionals planning, doing outreach and finally actually working on the streets to prepare them, paint them and sometimes lay new concrete as well. So here's to you - the people behind the scenes who have made it safer and more enjoyable to bike around New York City! Thanks for all you do and keep up the great work!!!

Normally I think protected bike lanes can be overkill, but converting the regular bike lane on 8th Ave has made worlds of difference in my commute. Thanks!

The bike lanes on Bedford and Wythe and Franklin have been extremely valuable to me as a bike commuter. I feel much safer than I did before. Thanks so much!

I make a deliberate effort to plan my 20 miles of daily commute around the location of the bike lanes. For example, I ride south through L.I.C. and Greenpoint to get to the williamsburg bridge rather than take the 59th st. bridge and second avenue because of the prevalence of bike lanes in those two neighborhoods. Even in this sub-freezing weather I see many others doing the same as I return home at 10 pm every night. Thank you very much for installing all the bike lanes. Without them, I feel like I'm taking my life in my hands just to get to work.
Sincerely,
William Linn

Thanks so much for making large swaths of my journeys a respite from cabs, delivery trucks, ambulettes, and BMW's. I enjoy the invigoration I feel from riding the streets and avenues, but it's nice to feel safe once and a while too.

The difference in pre-bike friendly NYC and today is staggering. Before it was considered an extreme thing, and after being side swiped by a cab I can attest it was certainly not safe. I stopped riding for years. Today, there are so many safe routes it dramatically feels more viable and safe to bike to work, or just tool around. I bike now more than I ever have here. Thank you!

The bike lanes are good improvements to the city, and are for the most part well planned and executed. I also applaud your willingness to experiment with new designs and innovations.

Thank you so much for all the new bike lanes, for recognizing the bicycle as a legitimate form of transportation and in fact one that helps us stay fit, save money, save the environment, and feel more in touch with our city!

Thank you DOT for the miles of new bike lanes. It is a wonderful feeling to finally see someone looking out for the needs of cyclists and pedestrians. Having the option to cycle as a means of transportation is exactly what this city needs. We owe you a big thanks for making that option safer and more inviting. Thank you.

It is completely awesome what DOT is doing. Please don't let a bunch of backwards-thinking car-owning people discourage the creation of more lanes. I personally bike a whole lot more now that there are so many safe bike lanes. and every time I bike, that's one less cab on the road belching out fumes, making noise and running over people.

Thanks DOT for the great work, on Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, along Broadway in Manhattan, along the West Side Highway, and countless other additions. Your efforts are making our roads safer and encourage us cyclists to be where motorists can expect and anticipate us.

I feel like in the not so distant future, bikes are going to be viewed as the time-tested mode of transport they are, not just something enjoyable to do in this city. To go backwards from what we have finally achieved as far as more bike lanes and more awareness would be ridiculous. As cars get smaller, the bike lanes should get bigger and more abundant.

For quality of life there are very few things that bring as much return as creating a viable, well structured bike path system. I personally know two people killed by cars while on bikes. We have a great city and it deserves a great bike path system that encouraged people to save natural resources, improve their health and cut down on car congestion -- all by biking.

Don't punish those who use the bike lane! I see dozens of bikers utilizing the lanes in my neighborhood every single day. There are so many that is surprises me on a regular basis. Tell the drivers of NY that they need to learn to share the road. How about less SUV's and more bicycles. P.S. - I don't ride a bicycle myself. I also don't own a car.

Thank you for all of the bike lanes. I feel so much safer on the streets now. Due to the increased number of bicyclists crossing the Williamsburg Bridge, I hope that protected bike lanes on Delancey Street are next on the agenda. This is one of the most important missing links in the city!

DOT: Thank you for the improved and expanded bike lanes in NYC. Please continue to add more and make additional improvents to provide safe biking and bike commuting in the city. It is imperative that this funding not be reduced, especially as our country begins a renewed effort to become "green"!

As a daily bicycle commuter I feel safer whenever I am able to ride within a bike lane. Many of the new bike lanes that have been put in place throughout the last few years are lanes that I use regularly along my commute. Thank you!
