This petition addresses the issue of domestic violence worldwide. It calls for action from men to intervene in the domestic violence against women they see or hear going on around them.
We suggest simple distractions like knocking on the door if screams are coming from behind it and asking to use the phone. This can delay violence or make it obvious to violent individuals that others are aware of what goes on within those four walls. If you are aware of friends or family around you affected by domestic violence, approach them about the issue, you will have a better chance as a male than a woman to have a meaningful impact.
One in three women worldwide have experienced beatings, forced sex or other abuses in their lifetime (Amnesty International). This is a staggering statistic and requires every person's commitment to the fight to change. As men you have the ability to divert your neighbours and friends from following this path. You can enable women to their full potential, and try to restore compassion in society. By signing this petition you are agreeing to uphold your commitment to be aware of violence against women around you and to interfere when the situation arises.
We understand that one in three women worldwide have experienced beatings, forced sex or other abuses in their lifetime, a situation which can only end by the involvement of every individual on the planet. As men we have the ability to divert our neighbours and friends from following this path by enabling women to reach their full potential.
We commit to ending violence through involvement in situations as they arise by simply knocking on a door if a woman's screams are heard. We understand that such actions will make it obvious to violent individuals that others are aware of what goes on behind the walls. We also commit to raising awareness of our friends or family through education. As men, we agree that we will have a better chance of changing the behaviour of the perpetrator than a women would.
Violence against women can be eradicated but only through involvement, acknowledgment and education. We, the undersigned, agree to pursue these goals and to spread the word.
