And the American academic Norman Finkelstein has been arrested and ordered deported from Israel. Finkelstein arrived in Tel Aviv earlier today on his way to the Occupied Territories. He was immediately detained and told he is banned from Israel for ten years. He%u2019s expected to be deported tomorrow. Finkelstein is known one of the most prominent academic critics of Israel%u2019s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.

Jerusalem - The US political author and critic of Israel Norman Finkelstein was denied entry to the Jewish state on Friday, his lawyer said.
Finkelstein landed at Ben Gurion international airport near Tel Aviv in the early morning and was told by a representative of the ministry of interior that he would not be allowed into the country on %u2019security%u2019 grounds, attorney Michael Sfard told dpa.
%u2018This usually means a 10-year ban on entry,%u2019 Sfard added.
Finkelstein, who is Jewish and the son of Holocaust survivors, has written critical books on Israeli policies in the Palestinian territories and on what he called %u2018exploitation%u2019 of the Jewish tragedy during World War II.
Finkelstein has received with the fierce disapproval of some authors and academics, while others have praised his controversial works.

If you don't allow Dr. Norman Finkelstein to enter the Occupied Territories, then you should henceforth cease to call yourself a democratic state.

As I look down the comments from others, I see how hateful many Jews are about Norman Finkelstein. Their hatred toward a man who has written so eloquently about the holocaust, about the middle east and the rights of Palestinians is shocking. Why did they sign the petition at all. I demand Finkelstein be able to visit Israel -- as any jew may do.
Dr Finkelstein is a respected lawyer who acts according to his conscience.Let him enter Israel.He could be a support for some Israelis (civilians and military personels) who honestly question the actual Israeli strategy to assure security
In fact, Norman Finkelstein had no desire to visit Israel. His sole purpose was to visit a close friend who resides with his family in the West Bank. Dr. Finkelstein was forced to pass through Israel as it illegally and belligerently occupies the Palestinian West Bank and East Jerusalem/the Old City (along with the Palestinian Gaza Strip, Syria's Golan Heights and Lebanon's Shebba farms) and controls all entrances and exits.

Freedom to travel and freedom to speak are essential human rights for all that Israel should be supporting in deed and word. This includes allowing Norman Finkelstein to enter and travel in and through Israel.

If Israel is a democracy it must not be afraid of the legitimate views of its critics. Let Norman Finkelstein travel freely to Israel!
Israel's actions toward Dr.Finkelstein are typical of their treatment of anyone who disagrees with them in any regard. (And yes, I know I just blew my chances of ever being allowed in Israel.) What ever happened to all Jewish people being welcome in Israel?
Is this not typical of the actions that Israel itself accuses the rest of the Arab world of? So much for the beacon of democracy! Having just been in Israel & Palestine, I witnessed first hand just how undemocratic Israel really is. It is only a matter of time before the brutality that is present in every element of daily life for the Palestinians is exposed for the world to see.
It is an outrage that an academic of Dr Norman Finkelstein's standing should be hounded, vilified and now deported for his courageous support for Palestinian human rights and his impeccable scholarship exposing Israel's violations.
By arresting, detaining and deporting Prof Finkelstein, Israeli government has only helped to reiforce the world opinion that it is not a REAL democracy. Your government can right this wrong by inviting Prof Finkelstein to visit Israel any time he chooses.
