These Treats Killed My Dog

TO:  ALL DOG OWNERS - PLEASE READ!

On Saturday night, (8/16/09)  my 6 year old Shih Tzu, Nikko,  waseating a dog chewie named Windee (a/k/a Moo tubes & Beef Trachea).  He began choking and I tried but could not get the Windee chew from him.  I thought the choking stopped before I went to bed but the next day I woke up and Nikko was dead.  The necropsy performed that morning revealed approximately 2 inches of the chew lodged in the trachea leading to death by asphyxiation.

The  6" Windee chew is manufactured by Jones Natural ChewsCompany (the label says Jones Gourmet Chews Company) located in Rockford Illinois. I purchased the Windee from SitStay.com.   The chew isadvertised as "good chewing for all size dogs".  There are absolutely no warnings that choking can occur and cause death OR the Windee can lodge in the trachea and thus cause death by asphyxiation.

I contacted Jones Natural Chews company and spoke to Dean Jones, one of the owners.   I  told him what happened and he said he would send me a letter advising as to what would be done.  When I didn't receive the letter I called him back and he said the letter was sent. I still have not received any letter.  I requested this product be taken off the market so this would not happen to another dog.  He said they would NOT take the Windee chew off the market. I then requested a warning label on the product that choking can occur and lead to death. He said he spoke to their Attorneys and they may put some type of warning that "Choking could be hazardous"  That is not sufficient. It minimizes the reality that death can occur.

Here is a company that trades on the close bond we share with our pets that showed no expression of remorse to a bereaved owner as contained in their following email and letter to me.  As you also see in their letter they did not feel any further communication would be productive.

 Bobbie,

I checked on the letter we sent and it was written on the 28th of August ( the Friday after our original discussion ). The office informs me it may have hit the post office on the 1st or 2nd of September.

Because I am over production my days tend to be earlier. I am usually here around 6 am and try to leave around 3pm whenever possible.

I am very sorry for your loss but I do think any further communication would not be productive.

Thank you,
Dean Jones

I support this petition wholly that a BIG warning must be placed on your product. A cold reply "I do think any further communication would not be productive" to someone who has just lost their pet from one of your products will certainly not get you any business. You will learn that there are millions of pet owners in the world and the repercussions can put you out of business.

Good luck with your petition! I'm pledging my support for your cause. I apologize for your very difficult loss. I have promoted your pledge via my twitter account. Good Luck, and take care.

I cannot believe that Dean Jones was such a cold hearted person (and owner of the company) when someone lost their beloved pet because of choking on THEIR product! I will NOT buy their products...not only because it is unsafe but because Mr. Jones is very nonchalant about labelling the packaging and showing respect for the lady that lost her dear dog.

It is utterly unconscionable that a company would continue to allow such a dangerous product to be manufactured, much less sold to unsuspecting consumers who only want what is safe and best for their furry companions. It is because of the carelessness of companies like this that convinced me to make all the food that my canine children eat, including treats and snacks.

i guess it does not matter how many dogs die as long as you, the company, make money.

This incident and the company's refusal to add warnings should be reported to the appropriate government department dealing with safety and product labelling for the pet products industry. I am so sorry for the loss of this precious little dog Nikko.

This company should either take this product off the market or at the very least put a warning label on this product. I will not be buying it or any other product these people make.

I had no idea that chew sticks can cause something as serious as death by choking. I am shocked. And in future, I'll take care. My dog takes like a second to finish one chew stick. I am really sorry for your loss Bobbie. I can understand how much it must hurt. I wish you are able to come out of this soon. RIP Nikko.

This is a heartbreaking story - as a pet owner I urge you to consider how much this little dog suffered after suffocating on one of your chews. A simple warning on the package might prevent further suffering. Please.

Unfortunately, I live in Florida. BUT you can be sure, I'd be at the company's front door 1st thing if it had been my dog! Bobbie, somehow you need to get to the news media & have them do a news story about this. then you should contact the Illinois Senators to get them involved in making sure that it's law they post a warning on their food packages. I'd also contact the FDA (if they are governing body over animal food) & have them enforce a "warning" about chewing that crap can cause death). None of this will bring Nikko back but it may save another dog's life. This broke my heart. Contact Rockford Illnois Newspaper now!!!!! My heart goes out to you

From the look of things, they don't seem to care that a dog died by their products. They say that they are sorry for the loss of someone's beloved pet, but if they really cared, they would take measures to make sure this doesn't happen again.
