These Treats Killed My Dog

TO:  ALL DOG OWNERS - PLEASE READ!

On Saturday night, (8/16/09)  my 6 year old Shih Tzu, Nikko,  waseating a dog chewie named Windee (a/k/a Moo tubes & Beef Trachea).  He began choking and I tried but could not get the Windee chew from him.  I thought the choking stopped before I went to bed but the next day I woke up and Nikko was dead.  The necropsy performed that morning revealed approximately 2 inches of the chew lodged in the trachea leading to death by asphyxiation.

The  6" Windee chew is manufactured by Jones Natural ChewsCompany (the label says Jones Gourmet Chews Company) located in Rockford Illinois. I purchased the Windee from SitStay.com.   The chew isadvertised as "good chewing for all size dogs".  There are absolutely no warnings that choking can occur and cause death OR the Windee can lodge in the trachea and thus cause death by asphyxiation.

I contacted Jones Natural Chews company and spoke to Dean Jones, one of the owners.   I  told him what happened and he said he would send me a letter advising as to what would be done.  When I didn't receive the letter I called him back and he said the letter was sent. I still have not received any letter.  I requested this product be taken off the market so this would not happen to another dog.  He said they would NOT take the Windee chew off the market. I then requested a warning label on the product that choking can occur and lead to death. He said he spoke to their Attorneys and they may put some type of warning that "Choking could be hazardous"  That is not sufficient. It minimizes the reality that death can occur.

Here is a company that trades on the close bond we share with our pets that showed no expression of remorse to a bereaved owner as contained in their following email and letter to me.  As you also see in their letter they did not feel any further communication would be productive.

 Bobbie,

I checked on the letter we sent and it was written on the 28th of August ( the Friday after our original discussion ). The office informs me it may have hit the post office on the 1st or 2nd of September.

Because I am over production my days tend to be earlier. I am usually here around 6 am and try to leave around 3pm whenever possible.

I am very sorry for your loss but I do think any further communication would not be productive.

Thank you,
Dean Jones

I certainly won't be buying any treat that has so far caused the death of one of our beloved companions. I was outraged by the shallow response to Bobbie's letter to the company. I would like to see these dog treats removed from the market or at the very least have a label that they can be dangerous to dogs.

It's sad when a company cares too much about profit that it dehumanizes them to the potential suffering their products can cause. If they do not remove this product from shelves, or at least put a clearly visible, strong warning on the packaging, then it shows where they stand. Please do what's right, Jones Natural Chews, and help prevent another unnecessary death.

I have just gotten a new puppy after 9 months from having lost my doxie from old age and if something happened to this little guy I would be heart broken . I took me forever to over my Tiffs passing. If you want to continue with your product you should take responsibility for what you are selling and please put a warning label on it.. there is absolutely nothing wrong in doing so. Some dogs are very small and have tiny throats and something like a chew is hard to get down so they end up choking. I should know I am a adult whom had neck and throat cancer 10 years ago with extreme radiations treatment , which I now have lots t of scar tissue so I can not eat solid foods, it has to be creamed .

To be an upstanding company that truely wants the best for the family dog they need to at least put a warning label on their products, if for no other reason than to warn dog parents that they need to supervise their dogs while chewing on their products and if chocking occurs to get them to a vet.

What a terrible death. I am so sorry for your loss Bobbie. Raw/beef hide are very dangerous to feed and will not digest. No matter what it was, but things like that should not happen, that's why they are called TREATS and we would think that they are safe to eat by our canines. The people who made this kind of treat raw/beef hide) or whatever kind of treat it was, need to pull it from the shelves, because it can happen again. But no, no one wants to be responsible for it after a tragic accident like that occurred.

I think all toys, other than the basic type, should be subject to testing prior to being placed on retail shelves. This would help avoid possible grief (and extensive medical/vet bills for pet owners) It would also spare the manufacturer legal suits.

Boycott this company. We all have to careful what we give our dogs. Carrots or slightly cooked green beans are good crunchy safe treats for dogs. Beware of raw hide or any stuff from china.

The manufacters of products like this have no care for our pets other than to make money from them. There should be a specific warning for small dogs or an indication of the size of dog the product is suitable.

We need to take more action like this. The market is littered with "all natural" treats that have no right using that title. And, just because it's all natural doesn't mean it is safe. So many consumers are blinded by this gimick and assume, "oh, what a great product, it's all natural". This treat is produced from the cast away parts when they slaughter the cow/lamb... It costs the manufacturer pennies per piece then charge us $3 - $6 each??! The least they can do is show compassion and responsibility!! But, if they put a warning on the package they may lose more consumers then if they leave it off and possibly kill some.
