"Illegal tortoise trade is happening in Britain" (DEFRA, 2004).

An estimated 10 million tortoises were shipped into the UK for the pet trade between 1890 and 1984 before the initial ban was introduced.  This trade is back! .......... and tortoises are once again being imported in substantial numbers.  However, DEFRA are failing to prevent this illegal trade and are in fact licensing it. These tortoises go through untold misery and often arrive here with chronic worm infestations and dehydrated, which far too often contributes to their early demise.

The Tortoise Protection Group (TPG) is campaigning for a ban on the importation of tortoises for the pet trade. Please help us keep tortoises in their natural environment by signing this petition.

We the undersigned support the TPG in its call for a ban on this cruel trade.

Not only are these poor creatures imported in terribly stressful conditions but, many have parasites and viruses which lead to the animals premature death. Herpes is extreamly prevalent in farmed captive bred populations, this can go unseen for along time and leads to slow painful deaths, tortoise imported with diseases and parasites threaten the lives and health of the breeding stock of "british tortoise" already in the country. There are enough british breeders within the uk to supply the demand for pet tortoises already and there are many many needing homes through organisations such as this where people can no longer care for their loved pets or illegal customs seizures. The tortoises that end up in petshops are always sold with some if not all the wrong equipment for their care needs (vivariums and heatmats to name but acouple of useless pieces of kit petshops sell to new keepers). Most vets and petshops are not specialised enough to provide care and advise for caring for tortoise. Many of the imports are totally unsuitable to be maintained in this country by anyone, such as lepard tortoises and tropical tortoises, these not only grow far too big for the average keeper the correct setups cost a fortune so it encourages mistreatment of creatures and neglect and ill health and death. Tortoises need more protection if they are to be enjoyed by future genarations in the wild, in their natural habitat where they belong.
