Township Of Union, NJ Animal Shelter 30 Day Euthanasia Policy

UPDATE THURSDAY, JUNE 28:  We have met with township officials and have come up with viable solutions to present at the next board of health meeting.  Union Township wants to do the right thing and they have heard you loud and clear!  NO MORE NEED TO SIGN THE PETITION - IT HAS ACCOMPLISHED ITS MISSION!

UPDATE TUESDAY, JUNE 26:  The President of Companion Critters, Inc. has been asked to attend a meeting at the Township of Union town hall on Thursday, June 28 to discuss this euthanasia policy.  We will close the petition as of 6/28/07 so we may present it at the meeting.   Your voices are being heard and we thank you for your help in making our case on behalf of the animals.  Since the petition will be closed after the meeting, we will post the outcome on our web site at http://www.critters.petfinder.org/.  Please check there for updates after 6/28/07.

THE PETITION:
The Board of Health of the Township of Union, NJ has approved the following policy for their municipal animal shelter (animal control facility):

A healthy adoptable animal can remain in the shelter for no more than 30 days from the day it enters the shelter.  After 30 days the animal shall be euthanized.

Please sign the petition asking that this policy be rescinded.  There is no reason for healthy, adoptable animals to be euthanized while there is space in the shelter.  At the present time, the shelter is NOT full and no healthy, adoptable animals have been euthanized.  This is a new policy and we would like to see it removed before it is enforced.  We, the volunteers of Companion Critters, Inc. animal rescue, have been working very hard to place animals from the Union Township Animal Shelter in adoptive/foster homes, clean the shelter, walk the dogs, take animals to our adoption events, get the animals vaccinated, microchipped, spayed/neutered, solicit donations of money and supplies and we have been very successful, although we could always use more help.  If you would like to help the animals at the shelter, please contact us at companioncritter@cs.com or see the shelter pets for adoption on our web site at http://www.critters.petfinder.org/.  Some of them are in foster care, but due to limited foster space, most must remain at the shelter.  We can always use more adopters, foster homes, donations, volunteers!  New homeless pets arrive almost daily.
We the undersigned respectfully request that the following policy, approved by the Township of Union, NJ Board of Health, be rescinded:

A healthy adoptable animal can remain in the shelter for no more than 30 days from the day it enters the shelter.  After 30 days the animal shall be euthanized.

As long as there is space available at the shelter, it makes no sense to euthanize healthy, adoptable animals.  Giving an animal 30 days to be adopted, regardless of the level of population at the shelter, is unrealistic.  It does not cost the township or the tax payers anything to allow animals to stay at the shelter as long as there is space.  Food and cat litter is donated and the staff needs to be paid regardless.  Please offer the animals coming into the Union Township Animal Shelter a safe haven for as long as possible so they have the best opportunity to become somebody's companion.

We appreciate your willingness to act humanely on behalf of the animals who depend on us.
