Toyota Navigation Override - We want it back!

Toyota Navigation Override - We want it back!

Target:
Mr. Katsuaki Watanabe, Mr. Shigeru Hayakawa, Other Toyota Executives

Let's get as many names as possible and deliver this to Toyota USA, and Toyota Canada.  If you have purchased a Toyota or Lexus with a navigation system and are unhappy about it, or was considering buying a Toyota/Lexus with the GPS but have changed your mind because of the loss of functionality in the GPS, then please sign this petition!

What is the Toyota Navigation Override Controversy? [from toyotaoverride.com]

With the release of 2007 models and the 6.1 Navigation software package, Toyota removed the existing 'override' that had been present in their cars since at least 2000. That override feature (a series of on screen inputs) had allowed the use the Navigation and Phone systems while the car is in motion- so for example, the passenger could look for food in the midst of a family trip. Instead, in order to use the touch screen on a 2007 Toyota, you need to pull over to the side of the highway or actually exit and park the vehicle. In some cases prospective buyers were misinformed that the override was still present.

Toyota's change in the car's operation lowers the bar for consumer rights:

  1. Many times it is more dangerous to pull over and stop to use the system.
  2. Toyota treats the car like software (even if you buy it, you don't actually own it, you only have a license to use it the way Toyota tells you to use it).
  3. Toyota made an important and to some customers critical, change in vehicle operation and customers were and are still not notified of that change before buying their cars.
  4. Toyota's stonewalling and refusal to accept that customers are annoyed /furious / inconvenienced is an indication that customer service is no longer paramount to Toyota/Lexus.
  5. Toyota is not my Mother

If you believe Toyota should fix this problem, here's how you can help:

  1. Call Toyota Customer Service at 800-331-4331 and ask to have the override restored.
  2. Place a review at Autosite , Edmunds, or Consumer Reports
  3. Tell your friends and neighbors that the override is no longer available. They may prefer a Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Saturn or a portable GPS unit.

We the undersigned have signed this petition to have Toyota restore the Toyota Navigation Override that was available on Toyota vehicles prior to 2007.  It has been made public to us that the decision to remove the override was a "liability decision" made by the legal teams.

There are several different navigation options, all without the functionality of the GPS disabled while moving.  In many cases, it is much more dangerous to pull over to use the GPS system, such as while on a busy freeway.   Other important features, such as callerid are disabled while moving, which completely renderes the visual call display useless.

As you can see by the names listed, this is an important issue to your loyal customers and potential customers.  This list includes names from exisitng loyal customers, as well as customers who were previously considering purchasing a Toyota or Lexus with a navigation system, but have reconsidered their decision based on the navigation system.

We thank you very much for the time that you have taken to read this letter.

Dear Watanabe-san, I recently purchased a brand new 2008 Toyota Highlander Limited from Irvine Toyota. My wife and I love this vehicle with the lone exception that the GPS Navigation system and bluetooth have restrictions when driving the vehicle. We were recently on a long roadtrip vacation. It was extremely inconvenient and problematic in that we could not enter address information or make calls while the car was moving. Why weren't we informed about this during the sales process? This makes me want to return the vehicle back to the dealer. We felt as though we were misled during the sales process. This seems to be very unethical! I can understand that Toyota does not want to assume responsibility if there were a crash and it was caused by the driver entering information into the GPS system while the car was moving. However, it is the passenger who enters data while driving. It doesn't make sense that I would have to pull over to the side of the highway to enter address information into the GPS system. That in itself could create problems. I also own an Acura with a GPS and do not have an issue with entering information while driving. Toyota needs to look at the consumer needs and it's selling practices. I've been misled and request your attention to this matter.

I would not have purchased this car had I been properly informed.

I am very disappointed in my 2008 Lexus 350 ES navigation system. I would not have bought my first Lexus (and last) had I knew how lousy the navigation system was. If anyone has a solution on how to override the system, please post it.

I am extremely dissapointed in Toyota's lock out of the Navigation when the vehicle is moving. Stopping the vehicle to access the features when a front seat passenger is available seems retarded, especially on a freeway shoulder, as it is very dangerous to have traffic speeding by at 80 mph. If I had known about the lockout, I would not have purchased the option. My wife's 2008 Honda CR-V, has a far superior Navigation system, and her car only cost $28,000 (compared to the Highlander's $40,000). Not only that, HOnda allows the driver / passenger to use all the GPS features (radio etc) while in motion. It's the responsibility of the driver to ensure they exercise caution when driving (or let the passenger use the GPS)

It is so frustrating to try to use the Nav system in my 08 IS 250 Lexus, that I am going to go and buy a garmin, and will never pay for the GPS built in sytem in the future.

The speed lockout on the navi system is rediculous. Did the top execs ever consider that maybe a passenger could operate the system safely when the car is moving? This is WAY too expensive of an option to diminish its usefullness by this lockout. CHANGE IT!

2008 Camry Hybrid. My 4th Camry by the way, but maybe the last.

Buy a Toyota but don't get the GPS, get a portable Garmin or something. Everything is better than this stupid GPS. You can't change anything on the GPS without coming to a full stop. Toyota should have a disclaimer, this way Toyota wont get sued. It's like asking someone not to read billboards, drink coffee, smoke, while driving it's just stupid... At least make an option where if someone else sitting in the passenger seat the option is there to change the GPS. Toyota you SUCK!

My wife and I frequently travel together. Blocking out the passenger from using the Navigation/Audio system has severely decreased the value of the navigation package. I'd estimate about $2,000 worth. Has anyone taken Toyota to small claims Court to recover this lost value?

I wouldn't have purchased the GPS unit if I had known about this issue before. It might have actually swayed me more to get the Infiniti FX35 or the Acura MDX.
