True Organic Brew: Require organic hops in organic beer

Target:
USDA National Organic Standards Board

*Hops are a key ingredient in all major styles of beer. Current USDA organic standards allow non organic hops in beer labeled organic and bearing the USDA organic seal. Chemical Herbicides, Fungicides, and Pesticides used on conventionally grown hop flowers can pose a risk to consumers. Consumers have the right to know if the beer they buy with an organic label contains non organic hops.

*We believe organic beer should always contain organic hops in order to be labeled as organic.

*We demand that the USDA remove hops from the list of non-organic agricultural ingredients allowed in certified organic products no later than 2012

We the undersigned formally ask that the USDA remove hops from the list of non-organic agricultural ingredients allowed in certified organic products no later than 2012.

Hops are a key ingredient in all major styles of beer.

Allowing the USDA certified organic seal on beer that is made without organic hops is misleading to organic consumers and erodes consumer confidence in the organic label. Furthermore, allowing non organic hops in organic beer is discouraging the efforts of North American growers and distributors of organic hops. By creating a deadline for producers of organic beer by which they are required to use organic hops, they will have full incentive to succeed in this change, and they will support efforts in the supply side of the industry to meet the demand.

We believe organic beer should always contain organic hops in order to be labeled as organic. We formally request that the USDA remove hops from the list of non-organic agricultural ingredients allowed in certified organic products no later than January 1, 2012. Thank you for taking the time to hear our concerns and considering our request.

As usual the people object to sneaky USDA efforts to reduce the Organic standard.

I believe that we need to make sure that all things labeled organic are truly organic, not just a big business marketing scheme.

The fact that there are any "non-organic agricultural ingredients" currently allowed in certified organic products comes as a shock. The designation should categorize products according to a 100% standard, not some "greater percentage" breakdown. A product should be clearly labeled to inform consumers about its ingredients. No Exceptions. Nothing can be called Organic if one of the cornerstone ingredients is not Organic.

Hops are a main flavor component in beer, so how can a beer be considered organic without organic hops?

organic means ORGANIC. Stop cutting corners.

Please consider removing the condition to include non-organic hops in USDA organically labeled beers. As 1 of only four main components in a traditionally brewed beer, hops is a pretty pretty significant contributor to what we consume when enjoying a beer. If this does not seem possible, consider the marketing emphasis in recent months by some of the mega brewers in this country on the importance of hops to their product.

My belief is if it is labeled organic, I fully expect EVERYTHING in it should be organic.

Organic should mean organic. Producers have the right to process their products and notify consumers about the ingredients they use, but to claim that their products are, in fact, organic, they should be organic. It's pretty simple that the ingredients used need to be grown and processed using organic practices. We simply need to create and enforce standards that allow for consumers to know what they're buying.

Fungicides and pesticides are used in hop farming, and Organic beer should only contain organic hops. New Zealand grows the only commericially available organic CASCADE hops for a reason: Our government agencies allow non-organic hops in beers labeled as organic. This is NOT truth in labeling, and it makes it not commercially viable to create TRULY Organic beer when you can label it as such without using organic hops.

As a consumer, I should be able to purchase organic products with the confidence that every ingredient in that product is truly organic.

Lets have truth in advertising in the beer world. If it says organic lets make sure it is organic.

Organic hops are growing in availability. The original small availability was the reason for adding them to the allowed list, but those days are done. Let's have organic brew be just that.

If the standards for organic are going to mean anything, it should also apply to the hops - at least to be fair to the breweries that are living up to the spirit of the standards and really using organic hops.

Allowing something to be certified as organic, while having conventional ingredients in it, makes absolutely no sense. When I buy organic, I am relying on that certification to let me know that it is in fact entirely organic, not made with conventional items containing fungicides and pesticides. Organic, should mean just that and not exclude hops from this certification!

It is pathetic that we even have to sign a petition demanding all Organic ingredients in a Certified Organic Beer. It repulses me that the USDA allows any product into a so called "Certified Organic" product that is not ORGANIC. It is a blatant disregard for human right to "pure" foods and if all ingredients are not Organic, there should be full disclosure and the product should not be Certified, it should state "contains organic ingredients". Only Organic HOPs and other Organic Ingredients should be allowed in Organic Beer. Period!
