Turkish government shut down by court order the internet connection to sites that are crucial and necessary for worldwide communication. Sites such as Youtube.com, videogoogle.com, wordpress.com, ateist.com, ateizm.com virb.com, ustream.tv, imeem.org, megupload.com geocities.com, tagged.com, richarddawkins.net and several others are no longer accessible to those living in Turkey and they remain banned. Please visit the sites below for further information on banned sites and protests in Turkey. www.kampanya.org.tr/sansur www.opennet.net The law that allows for the blocking of domain names stands. Blogger and blogspot.com domains were recently banned and unbanned in October 28th while courts await further evidence, in the mean time millions of bloggers continue to live with their blogs being blocked and unblocked. Turkish court that previously blocked Blogger requested "missing evidence" but made it clear that the ban could be reintroduced after the legal procedure is completed by the prosecutor. The banned sites allow access to the free world of ideas and provide sources of information for all citizens. We demand that Turkish government stops unilateral internet and press control and repression. For a truly democratic Turkey we demand to have all internet connection sites operational. Turkey's NATO membership and EU ambitions seem paradoxical to the infringement on the freedom of press and speech of its citizens by banning sites like Blogger and YouTube. The ban is self defeating as the EU is making a blacklist of censoring countries and also is creating software for people in these countries to use to bypass the censorship (see: Global Online Freedom Act) Thank you.
Turkiye de internet sitelerinin bloke olmasini protesto ediyoruz. Turk insaninin sivil haklarina saygi gostermenizi saygilarimizla rica ediyor, demokrasinin ilk kuralinin bireysel ozgurluk, fikir ozgurlugu, basin ve iletisimin serbestligi oldugunu da belirtmek istiyoruz. We the undersigned, We protest the ban on the internet sites. Sites such as blogger.com, Youtube.com, videogoogle.com, wordpress.com, ateist.com, virb.org, megaupload.com, ustream.tv, imeem.org, geocities.com, tagged.com, richarddawkinks.net and several others are not accessible to those living in Turkey. These sites are globally used by millions not only for entertainment purposes but also for genuinely serious information exchanges: postings in arts, educational, medical, political, social, legal and many other fields from blogs of individuals to blogs of institutions and small to large foundations, to political parties and all kinds of groups, to forums from all over the world make use of the sites. We are bewildered why the authorities would take such despotic steps and would narrow the country's vision instead of trying to broaden it. Repressing the intelligent, entrepreneurial, talented Turkish youth will not only stop the exposure to diversity and the eager young minds from learning but also prevent them from forming their own critical opinions. We as citizens of Turkey and citizens of the World ask the Turkish government to join the truly democratic Nations and to leave the League of tyrannical and despotic regimes by eradicating the notion that government can unilaterally control press and shut down internet sites without justification. We demand a free press and free exchange of ideas in Turkey! We demand for our youth to live in the world not apart from it! For a true democracy we demand all internet sites to be operational in Turkey! Thank you. Please visit both sites for further information about bans on sites and protests in Turkey.www.kampanya.org.tr/sansur www.opennet.net BIZ ASAGIDA BU KAMPANYAYA KATILAN VE IMZALAYANLAR: Turkiye de internet sitelerinin bloke olmasini protesto ediyoruz. Every citizen of any country should be able to view any site on the net. It is crucial. You might get offended, I don't. If I don't want to visit a site, I won't, but it's not for you to choose what I get to view. This significantly cuts people off and discourages freedom of speech.

Only oppressive and undemocratic governments control their citizen's access to the press and information.. It is interesting to note that the ban is directed to stifle the exchange of any type of intellectual communication, that is the reason the blogs, ateist.com, richarddawkins.com and sites that are questioning existince of God or discussions on religions or forums on scientific thoughts, blogs on Wordpress are so threatening to this government which is after all an Islamic and an autocratic government. You can not play the "secularist democracy" game, and ban sites that threaten your Kuran based education and life style. And the Nationalists are making it easy for them as they like to ban sites that question Turkish nationalism or patriotism as well and find insults even if you mention Armenian genocide! Their anger and so called misplaced "patriotism" is not working. It is time to wake up! This government is as corrupt as any other that governed in the last twenty years, but unfortunately they are doing it more successfully and they are slyly doing it in the name of islam and they are stealing our future and our monies and sharing it with their crowd, but their vision is as narrow and as destructive on the long run for all young turkish people as any other turkish politician that governed Turkey in the 20th century... A house of cards, it will crumble too...Time for a new Ataturk. An uncorruptible, truly secular, scientific minded, humanist leader.. But where is he or she?

I think the ban the sites are wrong. The sites help the people all over the world to know what's happening with cruelty of the animals. We need to speak in behalf of the dead and suffering animals. They need help from us unless you make better changes and set up new laws for your citizens to leave them alone and if they harm them or kill them, set up a new law to put them in jail and pay fines. This is the way to help the turkish dogs thru the Internets. It is time for you to make healthy changes for 2009. Thank you for understanding.
