Recently paved Reedy Creek Road and Trenton Road have increased the traffic and speed of motorists, compromising safety of cyclists and pedestrians that frequent Umstead State Park on these roads.

Umstead - Go Slow

Target:
All users and neighbors of Umstead State Park in Raleigh, NC
Sponsored by:

Paving of Reedy Creek and Trenton Roads has caused a significant
increase in traffic traveling at higher than appropriate speeds near the intersection of these roads at the entrance to Umstead. The result is a
very dangerous mix of fast-moving cars within two feet of pedestrians, walkers with dogs and strollers, joggers, and cyclists. Near hits are common with both people and park wildlife. The speed limits on Reedy Creek and Trenton Roads need to be significantly lowered and enforced and wider shoulders should be provided for pedestrians.

The intersection of Reedy Creek and Blue Ridge is also very dangerous. Cars blatantly run the red light, and cars turning do not yield to pedestrians and bikers lawfully crossing with the signal.

I would like to see a method of forced speed reduction in this area in order to prevent the injury and/or possible death of someone from this community. Road hump, signs warning of recreation area or even speed bumps.

Lower speeds by cars WILL allow drivers to better see peds, bikes, kids, pets earlier, thus preventing heartache by all. Believe me, for years our MTB trail had a dirt road near where dogs and riders could virtually ride without fear of cars running them down. NOW, the road is paved, the cars and motorcyles and trucks go faster than normal highway speeds just because the road is along the farm and bike trail. The posted speed limit is 35mph. The dogs no longer run free and it is even unsafe to park along the road during MTB races. So I am all for enforcement of a slower speed for cars. David

We need the help of police to enforce these lower speed limits when they occur or the lower speed limits will mean nothing. A biker was killed in April 08 near NC State b/c of a drunk driver going 34 in a 25. So as I mentioned earlier w/o CONTINUOUS enforcement the change would be nothing, bikers go to Umstead to exercise not to become speed bumps for nascar drivers.

Let's keep the steel boxes from hitting, hurting, or killing the people that don't want to burn hydrocarbons.

I would also like to see parking re-added at the Reedy Creek/Trenton areas and off of Ebenezer Rd. You should be encouraging the driving of shorter distances rather than farther. You have eliminated one major entrance of parking for the downtown folks by eliminating the Reedy/Creek parking. Also, did you not know that paving this road would bring people to it? But then I guess that is what you get when you add high end housing to the edges of a park. That land should have been purchased and added to the park, not developed. Wildlife always gets the short end of the stick. But then so do we as citizens who enjoy open space.

This corner has long been a major entrance to Umstead Park - for walkers, bicyclists and runners. It needs to be treated as an entrance with lower speed limits. More effective would be speed bumps. Do we need to wait for a pedestrian, or 2, to get killed on that road before adjusting traffic to the reality of a park entrance?

These safety concerns are urgent. All citizens (ie., taxpayers) of NC should have safe easy access to all their NC State Parks, including Umstead, and including the Reedy Creek Rd. entrance. A siginificantly lowered speed limit that will be consistently enforced is urgently needed at this location.
