The UN must help Burma/Myanmar

In 1988, students, professionals, and other protestors in Burma launched a nationwide uprising aimed at bringing an end to authoritarian rule during which millions of people courageously marched on the streets, calling for freedom and democracy.

The military responded by gunning down thousands of demonstrators and imprisoning thousands more in one of Southeast Asia's most bloody episodes in recent history.

Now, it's the monks who are rioting in the streets, calling for an end to military rule, advocating democracy, and peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression.

The military junta has issued a warning to the monks that a crackdown is imminent.

Don't let history repeat itself! Don't let innocent blood be shed again! Don't let the dream of democracy and liberty for the Burmese people be shattered!

The only thing that can protect the Burmese now is UN action. Urge Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to help Burma NOW!

We, the undersigned, urge you to take immediate action to address the crisis in Myanmar.

Across Myanmar, citizens are demanding -- in the face of violence and repression -- the basic respect for human rights that their government owes them. I respectfully urge you to take a lead role in supporting UN Security Council action to address the current situation in Myanmar as soon as possible.

Thousands of protestors in the streets, for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression, have now been attacked by the military. The United Nations will be looked upon poorly in the world if it stands idly by and watches this happen.

Given the scale and immediacy of this crisis, I urge you to call for immediate UN intervention.
