In 2006 there was a ban placed on Colorado's restaurants, bars, etc. The government decided for the people that smoking was not allowed indoors. Since then the economy in Colorado has hurt because of this, many locally owned bars and restaurants have closed because of this. If the non-smokers frequented all these place this would not have happened. It should have clearly been up to the businesses not the government. People worry about what smoking does to them, well I'm here to say that cars produce more harmful chemicals into the air then smoking does. We can not ban everything just because we disagree with it. As for the the non-smokers worrying about their health as they go to the bar and drink, you will not be hurt by a night in a smokey room just as you will not harm your body forever by a night of a few drinks. If you are tired of having the government deciding for you and you think that businesses should have the right to decide whether they are smoking or not please sign this petition.

A night in a smoky room puts me in bed for 3 days! Im allergic to smoke and have reactoins ranging from RAD (reactive airway disorder) where my lungs clamp shut to prevent poison from entering them to bad headaches and nosebleeds. My fiancee has had CO poisoning from a car exhaust and so when he gets around smoke - his O2 availability tanks and he passes out. I see people in our clinic with sickness after smoke exposures so don't try to say it's harmless!!! it's the 2nd leading cause of cats death and reason why chilren get asthma and cant feel well in school. My ex-boyfriends brother had the same attitude as you - he died from throat and lung cancer at age 39! and his daughter -well she was forced to breathed the smoke and has chronic bronchitis and catches colds easily. Thanks for your opinion, but I'll stick to what I know to be truth. P.S. Chemo is expensive!!!

I think they should have non smoking bars and smoking bars that way people who want to work and drink in a smoke free enviroment will have their own bars and the people who want to work and drink in a smoking enviromet will have their own bars as well everyone is happy no one is questioning the restaurants being smoke free just the bars and casinos. I drive all the way to New Mexico or fly to Las Vegas just to gamble they should have the top floors of the casinos as smoking areas away from restaurants and the bottom level should be non smoking and have the restaurants in the non smoking level as well that way everyone is happy. I believe owners of these busiesses should make THEIR own choices not the people who pass bills or complain enough. It's infringing on our right to the pursuit of happiness and both smokers and non smokers have this right and if smokers are willing to make a compromise so should the non smokers. I have traveled the country and lived in a number of cities and never before have I seen people act so righteous about their beliefs and be so unwilling to make small compromises. It's sad and it makes Colorado look like they are self righteous nazi nannies. I will be moving away if this does not change soon. This ban is ruining peoples businesses and people are losing their jobs how does that add up to a benifit when people can't even work anymore.

The minority of people who complain the loudest always seem to get the politicians attention...Yet they are so worried about dictating our lives that they fail to do their job which is listen to the people...We elect them...It is our votes that put them in office, yet they work for big corporations or the minorities in this country...It is our tax dollars that pay your salaries...This is not a communistic society (yet), listen to what people want and not what you think they want...By the way, maybe you should worry more about running the state and less about dicating peoples lives, only then will you stop warehousing our citizens of this state in prisons and will actually do your jobs...Thank you...

The government should not tell a private business what they can and cannot do. Everyday the government is gaining more control over our lives, bit by bit. If businesses choose to allow smoking, have a sign out front saying this establishment allows smoking so the people not wanting to be around smokers know not to go inside. Or have a fresh air system in place so everybody can enjoy the establishment. Or both! By the way, I am a non-smoker. I am against so many government regulations on our lives. My wife does smoke. Since the smoking ban, we have stopped going out. Good point, Ellen North, about being afraid to stand outside to smoke. My wife and I own our own business but it is not in the best part of town. When my wife wants to go out for a smoke, I have to go with her. She is afraid to be out there alone any more since the few times she did go out alone, some seemingly undesireables approached her.

'Adult' means 'able to make your own choices'. People who smoke want to be able to smoke at work - without being shoved outside to breathe hazardous, solid-cored diesel particulate from passing traffic, run the risk of being mugged or raped, or freeze in snow and rain - and this goes double for women working nights in bars, who smoke. How is it that money-grabbing groups of rabid egomaniacs demanding that the right-of-choice, as well as the hard-earned money, of other adults be given to them, no matter how intrusive or destructive to others - actually get it handed to them on a plate, along with our heads? Because Tobacco Control organizations are backed by powerful industry, oppressing citizens perceived as vulnerable and 'less equal' than themselves. There is no acceptable excuse for refusing adults their traditional choice of legal activities - and there can be no unhealthier attitude than that displayed by TC advocates. We are unwittingly and unwillingly subjected to hundreds of thousands of toxic exposures for industrial profit on a regular basis - and it's only the one we chose, which benefits us, which has to go?

With modern politics controlling our actions and manipulating the thoughts and principles of the mindless masses, I'm sure my views on individual rights AND responsibilities would surely have me on the no fly list. Do what you will and say what you will, just be ready to deal with others when your interactions cause disagreement or harm. I am a non-smoker and I still believe this law to be a violation of individual freedom. If someone came to my door step and took away my right to do something simply because I might have allowed them to sit by my fire, they have the responsibility to leave before I shoot them!

We are a country of free enterprise and a country that gives us the freedome to choose how we conduct business and our lives. It isn't the place of the goverment to regulate how we live or what we do to our bodies. Where I'm from non smoking bans have hurt local businesses. I personally don't have the desire to go bowling or visit bars, and especially in the winter. Instead of banning smoking, why not give businesses the choice and tax incentives to either eliminate smoking on the property or physically divide the premises with a wall or barrier that contains smoke and has increased ventelation so the customers that do smoke can comfortably. Its also not fair to say that the server's or employee's health is at risk in a smoking facility because they know the place of business allows smoking, and can look for another job that doesn't allow smoking. It is the choice of the employees to contine working at such employers. Asside from that, us smokers pay alot of money out in sin taxes. We generate billions of dollars a year from sales. We don't have to smoke, but to single us out with out consideration is wrong, and goes against those who voted in the ones in office.

Only the owners of businesses should decide if they want to ban smoking in their own places of business. The government should not rule that people not be allowed to smoke on private property. People have a choice as to whether or not they go to restaurants or bars that allow smoking. Therefore, I am signing this petition and urge you to undo this smoking ban in Colorado.

If I can't have a cigarette with my cocktail I just don't go to the bar. If everyone else feels the same way I do, I can sure see why the businesses are hurting. The government is making personal decisions for me more every day. What happened to Freedom in this country? We must stand up for our constitutional rights.

Proper ventilation has made smoking lounges in airports virtually smoke and odor free, we have the technology to treat the air in public places, why not use it and create a healthier environment for everyone, smoker or not. I hate other people smoking while I'm eating, on the flip-side, I haven't visited a bar since the ban. Right now we have a much larger issue, which is supporting American business, so lift the ban, lets go to the bar.

I am an owner of a small Pub and I can assure you that the smoking ban is detrimentally affecting my business and my right to pursue the American Dream. This ban inhibits my "certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." It should be my choice to have a smoking or non-smoking establishment, the same as it is everyone else's right to not patron my establishment because of the smoking. I spend about $60.00 a week during Colorado's freezing weather to provide my "smokers" a warm place to enjoy their cigarettes (which are legal to buy on every corner in America). It is important to note that it is an average of 80% of the customers in my Pub are smokers and on that patio. Curiously, the non-smokers that professed their patronage are tangibly absent and the ones that are there, could care less about the smoke. In fact I would say maybe 2% of non-smokers actually care. It is also important to note that approximately 4 years before this ban was put in, it was actually on the ballot for the voters to decide. It was not a marginal victory, but a landslide conclusion of the Coloradan voters to NOT put in a smoking ban. An overwhelming 80% of voters spoke their voice and yet a roomful of cigar smoking politicians went against our wishes and implemented the ban without the voters consent. I find this interesting considering this quote from the Declaration of Independence "That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their safety and happiness." It is funny that it states that the government derives their just powers from the consent of the governed. How can this hold true, if the voters in this great state clearly and overwhelmingly objected to this ban, but yet the ban exists driving so many small business bars and restaurants out of business, creating more unemployment and economic crises during this recession. Do what is right and listen to the people, give the small business owner the opportunity to pursue "liberty" and "Happiness", by giving the proprietor the say in what clientele they wish to cater to. Do not take the stand that 2nd hand smoke is fatal or even harmful, because of a flawed report by the WHO that stated "if you inhale 2nd hand smoke you will die". There is not one documented case of anyone dying from 2nd hand smoke, but they did not lie. Everyone will die, whether they inhale 1st or 2nd hand smoke. It is still a lie, nonetheless geared towards controlling the people of this great country. In the end, it is not for the government to "govern morality". if it is a legal product or service, we the people should be allowed to use them at our discretion and accept the consequences of those choices. If there is a lottery or Powerball, how can the government tell the American people they can not buy a ticket, because they need to pay their bills. That is the choice and freedom of every citizen. As long as it is legal, they should have no say in how, why or how much we use the product. I know I have ranted, but I hope I have made valid points to the invalidity of this ban. Stand up for your rights people, before the government starts making all of your choices for you. This is called Socialism if you weren't aware and that is not what "Democracy" is about. Why fight so hard for the little countries across the world to have the same rights we are denying ourselves. Thank you for your ear and please not only sign this petition, but send it to every smoker and non-smoker you know. Let's take back the rights our forefathers fought so hard for and even died for.

This smoking ban is a joke...My husband and I do not or will not step a foot through any door...that does not allow smoking...We travel all over the US and plan our trip to only stop for food, gas and gambling in the smoking states...and guess what Colorado use to be one of our stops...WE ARE HAPPY TO SPENT MONEY IN SMOKING PLACES...

During June 2008 I attended a conference in Denver, Colorado. I reserved a smoking room in a downtown hotel. I was not told until I arrived that smoking had been banned in all hotel rooms in Colorado. Luckily I had rented a room with a balcony and the weather was nice so I enjoyed my visit. I stayed one week and spent over $2000. However I plan to never attend a conference in Colorado again. Also I will never visit again for any reason. I find this law unreasonable, petty, mean, and fascistic. I am horrified that this has happened in the United States of America.

Fact: at the time of the ban, only some bars and less than 50% of restaurants permitted smoking. The people and the owners were working it out. Ther was virtually no where else one dcould be socialy and smoke. My wife and I rarely go out to dinner for that reason-I like to have a few drinks and I smoke when I drink. So I drink at home, and if I go out I have a drink at home first. They've lost most of my revenue with this ban.

To Whom It May Concern, Would you not think the smokimg ban would be seen for what it caused. Just look back to when Bans were imposed and what has happened to the ecconomy of the USA. I own one of two local bars in town and we have all seen a dramatic drop in patrons. Are rights are being taken away on a daily basis yet even as we stand together in defiance we are ignored. I for one am becoming increasingly in extreme doubt that our local as well as main government is even capably of taking care of the small business owners. Enough is enough--bring back the republic.

I am a bar owner here in Denver and I GUARANTEE you that 85% of our bar patrons smoke. DO NOT decide what is morally right for us Americans. We certainly have not seen all these non-smokers rush to the doors! How about the government paying for my $500.00 bill every month for propane? It's especially fun when all of our customers are outside smoking! We are MORE sick because of being herded out into the cold. I will be nore than happy to get involved with this petition.

I have always been a proponent for clean indoor air by regulating through county/city building codes, segregated smoking rooms with dedicated HAV systems. HAV systems remove smoke and change out the air. A smoking room with a proper HAV system can have cleaner air then a non-smoking room without a proper HAV system. The smoking room would be required to have less square footage then the non-smoking room and the amenities would be equal to or less (seating, etc). A patron would access a service area in the non-smoking room or a service area window to the smoking room would be pressurized to eliminate any air coming in from the smoking room. Regulating clean indoor air this way would have kept businesses from failing, keep future business from failing, provided more jobs and created new revenue streams for county/cities. Many years ago the city of Boulder Colorado began regulated clean indoor air in a similar fashion with great success. The present structure of the Colorado Indoor Clean Air Act is unconstitutional because its sole underling purpose is to discriminate people and singles out an industry for elimination.

Colorado's smoker ban is a complete disgrace. It has wrecked bars and casinos throughout the state and brought no benefits. The ban violates OSHA recommendations. OSHA, the federal agency that sets workplace safety guidelines, has declared that secondhand smoke (ETS) in normal conditions does not constitute a health hazard. Yet, the CO legislature in its "infinite wisdom" declared that it knew better than OSHA and passed a ban. What study did the legislature conduct to contradict OSHA?

The enactment of the Colorado Smoking Ban has had a negative impact on many western slope businesses. The majority report a 35%-50% decline in revenue. We have been one of the lucky ones. However, that said, when we do hold non-smoking events to cater to other clientele, our revenue is down 40% from those events that are designated smoking events.

While Smoking is bad for you. Second hand smoke is not. As many studies I have seen, the studies the nanny's have used are cherry picked. There are half truths, faults statistics and out right lies used by the special interests for profit. The Robert Woods Johnson Foundation for example. They spend millions of dollars to get smoking bans passed. Then make money selling smoking succession products. R.W.J.F. owns stock in Johnson & Johnson. The lies have cost some of us our businesses already. Add the economy, The bans, The regressive taxes on tobacco, The increased cost of doing business because of all of the above. What do you have? More businesses lost. Let business run business and government run government. The fight for individual rights and personal property rights should never stop.
