UnethiCurl: The Mass Misrepresentation of Curls in theMedia

Target:
The Bravo Network and all the misguided Curly Girls!
Lorraine massey, Devachan owner and author of the guidebook Curly Girl needs your help!

Bravo recently televised an episode of Tim Gunn's show "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" which unfortunately depicted its newest makeover model Ariana Vargas getting a fabulous curly cut by Lorraine Massey herself. Unfortunately the producers of the show decided to have her hair blowfried straight for the final reveal!

This media depiction obviously helmed by the production team, debases Devachan's mission to embrace the natural texture of your hair and needs to be petioned!

This Sunday November 16th Bravo will be televising a re-run of this episode at 12 Noon and we ask that you watch and tell us what you think!

The following is a segmented recap taken from this blogger's site.

Tim and Greta's challenge this week is Ariana Vargas. She is getting ready to move to Chicago to become head of Marketing and PR for a company that her sister is opening. The problem is, she has no clothes to go along with her new job and her new life. I mean, she does have clothes, but, yuck. She's got peeling shoes, sweaters with pills, sweat stains, and some really bad hemlines.

For hair and make-up Greta and Tim take her to Devachan Salon, which is a high end salon that specializes in curly hair. After years of not loving her hair, Ariana is encouraged to embrace it by Lorraine Massey, who is the original Curly Girl and known for helping people get in touch with their inner curl. Lorraine cuts her hair dry and tells her to move around as she cuts from different angles. She also cuts a good 6 inches off, which Ariana likes less and less.

After the cut, she goes off to Edward at Devachan Salon for color, and he gives her a lot of natural-looking highlights. Then it's back to Lorraine's chair again, where she clips her wet hair up and separates it based on Ariana's natural wave. She allows it to dry naturally, then shakes it out. Ariana says that it's going to take some getting used to, but she likes it.

With her new look complete, it's time for the fashion show.

Something, however, is still amiss. Greta can tell that Ariana is still a little freaked out by her haircut, but Ariana assures her that she will get used to it. Everyone is wowed by Ariana's new look as she sashays down the runway (and almost stops when she sees her sister there, because her sister was supposed to have been in Chicago), but Greta is tired of that hesitancy in Ariana's face. She can tell that the hair is REALLY bothering her. So before she can take her half-way face on her new look down the runway again, Greta straightens her hair.

I heard about your techniques for dealing with curly hair, and I need help! Me and both of my teenagers have curly, frizzy hair that is out of control. We have given up on the straightening iron, thank goodness, but my 16 year old son is especially miserable. He hasn't had a hair cut in over a year because no matter where we go he ends up with a round afro looking do. Any advice?

I firmly believe that a curly girl should be proud of her locks, I love mine and if anyone asks, they are my best feature overall. Its sad in this day and age we curly girls can not get a decent hair cut without coming out of the salon with some sort of wierd shape to our hair, mine always tends to go triangular at the back because the stylist always gives me a cut meant for a person with straight hair and always cuts it WET. Its really not funny and I always end up either drying it myself or being asked if I want it blow dried because the stylist doesnt know how to dry the curls to get the best of them. Ive not had my hair cut now for over a year and went last week and regret ever going, they have made a mess of my beautiful curls and shape. My hair when I got it all chopped off was exacltly like lorraines, same colour and all, i then went again but the stylist had emigrated and so since that first cut no-one has ever given me a cut ive liked. I could cry. Other than saving up and taking a flight from the UK to see Lorraine I dont know what to do!

Hi everyone, this is Ariana from the show. I have read most of your posts and wanted to share my perspective with you. I was a stranger to the Devachan mission before appearing on the show. When I arrived Lorraine made me feel totally at ease, and it was utterly refreshing to be surrounded by individuals who support being oneself so entirely. I can honestly say that I have never had a better haircut. No one has ever taken the time to cut my hair curly to follow it's natural line, and this was something I said repeatedly while taping because I wanted Lorraine to receive all of the accolades she deserves. I fully support the Devachan mission and believe that there is nothing more important than embracing your true self. What I think is the most impressive part of the mission is that you don't feel any pressures to fit into anyone's ideal but your own. With all of this said, we cannot overlook the right to choose. I love my curly hair. I wear my hair curly most days and I embrace the frizz, the body, the waves, I love it all. There are days, however, that I enjoy wearing it straight. This fact alone does not make me a traitor to the mission or imply that I haven't understood what the mission is. For to argue this way would imply that anyone who colors her hair is a traitor to the Devachan mission because she is not embracing her true self. My uncertainty captured at the end had absolutely NOTHING to do with the curls and everything to do with the length. I think most women can remember a time that they had long hair for years and decided to go short. Sometimes you think you're ready and then you see the final product and although you're going to love it in 2 days (which I do!), at the time it's shocking to see yourself looking so different. Now imagine doing this on national TV in front of a crew. I was a bit overwhelmed. Lorraine, if you are reading this, I love my hair cut. I wear it curly almost everyday. Even when I wear it up, I usually wear it curly and get compliments on how "well I pull off curl". (The verbiage in that comment alone are enough to attest to the fact that we're not there yet, as curly hair should not be something you have to "pull off.") If I had any hesitations about embracing my curly hair before, my experience with you helped me love my curls and truly, as you say, for life. It is most important to me that you above anyone else on this posting board knows, that you did transform my perspective and I will always be grateful for the education you gave me. To those who worry that I am another "cookie cutter, un-confident soul" I understand why you post with such passion, but I urge you to believe that this curly girl is just fine. I love my hair in it's natural state. I am as proud of the frizz and body in my hair as I am of my hips and non-Hollywood size. I would be honored to have my hair cut at Lorraine's salon again, and the next time I am in NYC, you can be sure I will be at the salon, thanking you again in person. Thank you to everyone on this board fighting for freedom from societal pressures and for believing that each of us should have the right to choose to be ourselves.

I agree with Lorraine. In each makeover show, the stylist blow dries the woman's hair straight. The woman will not be able to maintain the straight hair everyday. Even if she blow dries her hair straight every day, it will become puffy or frizzy on humid days and she will always be fighting with it. The show should teach her how to care for her curly hair, using the curly girl method. I love my curly hair now that I know how to take care of it using Lorraine's technique.

You miss the entire point. Blow drying harms hair. Curly hair is beautiful.

Lorraine is the goddess of curly hair care and for a show that otherwise showcases designers visions to their finest advantage it is professionally discourteous, and downright upsetting, to destroy an artist's personal vision on TV and to mis-represent that the show will maintain the integrity of his or her work. Also, blow-drying straight the subject's hair as she moves to a new professional position implies that curly = unprofessional, which plays into a monolithic, culturally NOT diverse, outlook that is entirely outdated and out-of-step with the image BRAVO projects. BOO BRAVO! Shame on you, Mr. Gunn.

Makeover shows are always curly-phobic so it was very heartening to see Guide to Style tap Devachan's expertise and philosophy on curly hair. But, of course, phobias are strong and Producers are weak and it's no surprise that they let Ariana go "back in the closet" and act "straight." That's Ariana's loss. What really bothers me is that the show debased Lorraine's and Devachan's mission statement and damaged their professional standing. Tim Gunn would never highlight a clothing designer, have them work with the participant to create a look, and then replace the final runway clothing with someone else's designs. If the show wasn't going to show Lorraine's professional creation, why didn't they just edit out her portion of the show? I think that Guide to Style did real damage to Devachan's business (not to mention Ariana's hair) and I think it's legally actionable.

Being a curly girl myself, with hair quite similar to Ariana's, I was very disappointed with the blowout!! Why not show her an easy, but cute way to get it out of her face? Embrace the curl and give the rest of us ideas! It would have been an honor to have had my curls tamed at such a great salon!

I have a lot of respect for the work the good people at Devachan do for curly folk. It was a shame to see that Ariana couldn't handle her change. A change for the better in my opinion.
# 59:

I always instinctively knew that there had to be a better way to do my hair. Years of trial and error with blow fries, harsh gels and sprays that turned my hair into barbed wire, "anti frizz serums", etc. .... you know the drill. I think that's why I became a hair dresser, to find the holy grail for my hair. Destiny and will brought me to Lorraine, and paradise for my hair was found. I find it so sad and discouraging that when at last one hoped there would be a mainstream media show that would celebrate this revolution of beauty and how we as a society perceive it the producers and decision makers failed to come through. You cheat not just Lorraine and her extensive Devachan family, but every woman that watches your show. Every woman that wants to be understood and helped not hidden and erased. Your show and what you try to teach mean nothing and will always mean nothing until you understand what we in the beauty industry are meant to do.......Heal.
# 58:
7:51 pm PST, Nov 19, Miriam Nelson-Gillett, New Jersey
I thought Greta undercut Lorraine's expertise and trashed a contributor on the show. She sold out the whole concept of makeover by putting the subject right back into her comfort zone before she had time to get used to the change. Did they cut out a part where Greta spilled wine on the couture dress to make Ariana more comfortable, too? Devachan is a leader in curly hair care and style. Lorraine pointed out that Ariana's hair was damaged and Greta jumped right in to damage it again. Why bother bringing in experts? The show really lost credibility with me.

I have always loved my curls. When I came to Devachan and Lorraine cut my hair and taught me how to care for my hair I FELL IN LOVE!!! shame on you Tim Gunn and Bravo, to be honest the woman looked better before her BLOWFRY. So i guess that just means you have no idea about style and makeovers.CURLS are IN they ROCK and your BLOWFRY looked awful...Sincerly MELISSA

Beauty is about rockin' what you have and not apologizing! Sometimes it's fun to change up your hair and wear it a little different but a girl with curly hair who wears it straight (all the time) is not living her life. She is always running from the rain, humidity, sweat,... she spends hours to look like who she isn't. It's misrepresentation, it's a hassel... and for what? Just love yourself, the way you are.

As a woman who embraces her curls it's important for one's self-esteem to work with one of nature's gifts and not turn everyone into a cookie cutter straight haired, hard to keep from getting frizzy- head. I have learned to keep my curls manageable and frizz free through the expertise at Deva Chan Salon. Let the curls live free!!

If you go to a well known artist and ask her for a piece of her art to be used in a TV program and then you decide to change the piece of art but leave the artist's name attached to it you not only do a great disservice to the audience but you also do even greater harm to the artist herself by totally misrepresenting what that artist has worked many years to accomplish. At the very least full disclosure with pictures of before and after the straighening should be aired on the next show. Let the audience see for themselves so they can make their own judgements.

Why would you do such a thing - if it were a straight cut then do as you wish. But to debase Lorraine's talent in this way is a cardinal sin. I was Lorraine's first curly girl almost 20 years ago and I have NEVER gone back. Curly is curly period. Bobbie

For years I straightened and pulled and abused the curls that struggled to grow out of my head in an attempt to look like everyone else. Finally, eight years ago I began going to Devachon salon, where I was taught to love the natural state of my hair, and take care of my hair in the way it needs to be taken care of. I have never been happier with my hair, and often have people commenting and how wonderful and healthy it looks. I am stopped by women in the street who are dying to know how I get my hair to look this good, and councel all of them. Even my twenty year old daughter now embraces her "inner curl" and is respected for the fact that her look is not only different than everyone else, it is incredibly wonderful. But it took time, encouragement, and coaching for her to get there. I feel the show producers who straightened this woman's hair in the final reveal did an incredible disservice to both the woman herself, and the viewers, who are now left with the impression that her new wonderful "do" was less wonderful or glamourous than it should have been. It does little to reeducate the public that differences in style and hair health should be based not on current trends, but health, wellbeing of the hair, and acceptance of self!

Dear Bravo, The hair and fashion industry is been ignorant and inept at dealing with curls. As a result women straighten and men buzz. But the truth is that all it takes is the right cut and a little know how and your curly hair can be a wonderful expression of self. Bravo's straightening of curly hair in the name of a makeover is lazy. Worst it tells millions of us that we are not lovely and functional without a hot iron. This is wrong! You have a responsibility to promote natural beauty. Curls are for life!

I can't believe they did that to you. Tim should be ashamed of himself. Even Heidi wears her hair in waves sometimes. I have not seen this particular episode, but I saw another episode where the show did the same thing. They cut a curly girl's shoulder length hair to her chin. Then for the reveal, they blew her hair straight which made her look old. They showed her a couiple of weeks later at a party where she wore her curly hair and she looked fantastic. All the make over shows do the same thing. Either they cut the curls so short you can't do anything with them or they razor cut and blow dry and the poor girl can never get it to look that way again. What a nightmare! To me, women looking the same as every other woman does not denote style. I like looking unique and since I learned how to work with my curls using Lorraine's method and products, my hair always looks good. I love my curls and get compliments from strangers. But some of my friends still say I should blow it straight because curls don't get any respect, and my favorite, men are not attracted to girls with curls!

Curls are for life. Blowing one's hair dry is unhealthy - for your hair and for your daily life and for the environment. Ms. Massey gave Ariana a gorgeous hairdo and Ariana needed time to adapt and to recognize the beauty of the cut and style. Blowing out her hair may have been a quick fix and may have suited the show but it won't suit a real curly girl.

I was thrilled to see Devachan featured on "Guide to Style" but sooooo disappointed to see the blowdried hair 'walk the runway' in front of friends and family. You don't see contestants totally redo their makeup after their makeup session, or torch their wardrobes and go back to their old unflattering clothes after the Tim/Gretta intervention. Why then did this contestant trash her lovely natural curls for the straight look? It does a disservice to Lorraine Massey's cut, the salon's mission and all the Curly Girls out there who are being brainwashed into thinking that straight hair is the only flattering, professional way to wear hair. Shame on Bravo.

Unfortunately this show is not a "Guide to style". Slapping some clothes on some one and changing their hair back from it's natural state, only shows that they aren't special or unique. Making them feel that something is wrong with them. A guide to style did a great job of producing another cookie cutter, un-confident soul. Lorraine encouraged Ariana to be herself and all the show did was strip it away. Shame on you, Tim Gunn's a guide to style.

I love Lorraine Masseys' way with natural curly hair. Unfortunately, Greta took the easy way out. Curly hair is not a fad...it is a constant part of someones body. Sure, you can blow fry and iron it to within an inch of it's life, even with the very best tools and products, but what does Ariana do with it tomorrow and what is Tim Gunn promoting? Style or something akin to betraying oneself. I am a 26 year veteran in the Cosmetology profession and a very natural curly headed woman. I hope Ariana Vargas considers the amazing talent of Ms. Massey as an opportunity to emabrace her curls!

Along with every other unattainable ideal of female beauty, straight hair has been depicted in the print and broadcast media as the goal for every fashion-minded woman in America. The tyranny of same-ness, the chains of conformity, and the one-size-fits-all attitude of style makers and their followers need to be battled. Curly hair is beautiful and women who embrace their curly hair are beautiful. Stand up and let every curl be counted!!

It does take a certain sense of self, of confidence, to allow one's curly hair to go free. I think that the producers of the show pushed the model into a) cutting her hair shorter than she wanted and 2) allowing her curls to be themselves when she really wasn't ready.Hopefully there will be a woman or a man out there viewing this who has that confidence to see that celebrating one's natural beauty ( and in Ariana's case looking a whole lot prettier) is wonderful.

Lorraine's contribution to curl is unique and invaluable. Thanks to her, I have learned to love my curl ,as she also taught Ariana. It appears from the Tim Gunn Show that Ariana was persuaded to be unhappy with her new look, which was in reality quite flattering. It is a violation of the mission of Devachan's to feature a curly girl look and then blow fry it. Ariana lost not only her hair freedom but her natural look. Devachan's was done a great injustice by ruining the outstanding work of Lorraine and Edward.
# 29:

The model was to get a fab curly haircut, why make the change? Because you think the viewers want to see straight hair. Does straight hair make her more beautiful? Your natural beauty is a beautiful thing, that is what I try to instill in my daughter. Put away the flat iron, enjoy your beautiful curls!

Shame on Bravo Network and Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style for the slap in the face they delivered to Lorraine Massey, the Diva of Curls, by going back on their word and straightening Ariana Vargas’ curly locks for the final reveal! What this says to viewers is that curly hair is inferior to straight hair and that in order to be "stylish" or "beautiful", one has to have straight hair. This would suggest that "women of curl" need to deny their natural, God-given curls. For what? Curl is beautiful!

as it happens, i actually saw this show and thought that what they did was totally wrong, considering that they went to deva shan for the hair re-do. i would ask them to delete that entire segment from that show. it totally runs counter to the ethic of the salon and is unacceptable.

She goes back to the shower, the cameras are off, the stylists are gone, and she has to face her true self day after day. The responsible way to give her style is to teach her how to understand what she is and what is necessary for her best natural self to be manifested. Thats true, not staged, beauty in confidence.

I have been a client of Lorraine Massey's for over twelve years and abhor the producer's decision to blow dry Ariana Varas' hair for the final reveal. It goes deeper than "hair" - Ms. Massey is a unique refreshing voice in the world of women's style that teaches us to embrace the natural texture of our hair. Her skill and creativity with curly haircuts are treasured. The poor decision on the part of the producers of the Tim Gunn show was an assault on Ms. Massey's professionalism, creativity and spirit as well as to curly girls everywhere.

I blow-fried my hair for over 35 years, and then almost two years ago, a great friend told me about Devachan. Lorraine cut my hair, Ed gave me highlights, and I've never looked back. My hair looks great, healthy and very sexy . . . all the time. I haven't used a blow dryer in over two years. I can't believe they wouldn't let the model go on the show without blow-frying her hair. That's truly infuriating. What can we do to help the cause?

Why is it that no matter how much time we spend trying to make our curly girls aware of how to love their curls and take care of them some hair stylist still has to blow there hair straight when it the "final work of art" is finished? Girls it's ok to love and rock your curls!!!!

I was so upset at what Tim Gunn's show did to that beautiful curly hair! I specialize in curls and have been fortunate enough to train with the Devachan team 3 times. It is so true that these are make under shows. By blowing out the curls they are taking away part of the person's identity. Curls are for life and they are part of you. I so wish these shows would display someone who owns every aspect of their natural look. On a side note I have had my hair cut with Lorraine and that is no hair cut to be taken for granted! Curls for life!

I agree I loved seeing a show with information about curly hair, but so disappointed when she blowed it straight. I have very curly hair too, and Im always looking for someone who is a curly hair expert to do my hair and still havent been able to find anyone in my area. So to see someone get such a wonderfull opportunity and then blow it straight was so sad.

I just had my first appointment at Devachan, and the treatment I received was phenomenal. Devachan's stylists & assistants teach all its customers how to reveal natural curls at their loveliest. I saw bits of the Bravo episode and thought Ariana's hair turned out beautiful. It's up to her whether she wants to wear it straight or curly, but I wish that Massey's philosophy had been properly explained ... there was a lot of hard work that went into showing Ariana, and the world at large, all the great things that Devachan customers already know. I've read some comments on the Bravo site, and was happy to see that someone has already said that Ariana's hair looked much prettier when it was curly (yay!). In one final note of vindication for Devachan, there is a follow-up video on Bravo's site titled "Where is Ariana Now" - at the end of the interview, Ariana says she is happy to wear her hair both ways. (See http://video.bravotv.com/player/?id=833441) So, another "yay!" for Massey & Devachan there. BUT it really is a shame that Devachan's philosophy, and their dedication to hair care wasn't correctly advertised on the actual show. So many women would benefit from knowing how to properly care for their hair! My own hair went from FrizzBomb to AMAZING. It was in very bad form for Bravo to undo all the good that Massey did for that girl's hair, at the same time ruining the education that could have reached other women in need of help. That move was indeed "UnethiCurl" and I am happy to sign this petition.

We're living in a global identity crisis. Mass media especially subliminally and overtly encourage us to compartmentalize ourselves into stereotypes and instruct us on how we should look and act. It's time we take charge of our own identity, and embrace who we really are. Modifiying ourselves of what's natural and quite frankly already beautiful to comply with someone elses vision of how THEY want us to be, is asinine. Do you for you, or don't do it at all.
