Urge Garland Texas to stop gassing homeless pets!
Urge the City of Garland, Texas Animal Services to stop euthanizing unwanted pets using a carbon monoxide gas chamber and switch to the more humane method of intravenous sodium pentobarbital.
Most cities in North Texas stopped using carbon monoxide years ago, but Garland continues its use - by far the largest City in Texas to cling to this method, which many have termed "barbaric". Injectable sodium pentobarbital is widely considered the most humane method and is used by veterinarians in private practice. It is a peaceful, painless death. Carbon monoxide, while still legal in Texas, should only be used when no other legal option is available according to the Humane Society of the United States.
The American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Center For Disease Control all consider intravenous sodium pentobarbital the preferred, more humane method. As one veteran animal control officer commented, "We have progressed beyond stuffing animals in a machine, flipping a switch, and going to get a cup of coffee. Where is the compassion in that?"

Jamey Cantrell, Plano Animal Services Manager, was recently quoted in the Dallas Morning News saying "I have euthanized thousands of animals. But to me, I always know that at least it was as painless as could be, and I can be nice to them for their last few minutes on Earth. They may never have even had someone pet them before."
