Put an end to the Styrofoam cups at Dunkin' Donuts!

Urge Dunkin' Donuts to switch from using Styrofoam

Target:
Dunkin' Brands, Inc.
Sponsored by:

I'm sure you've all heard the slogan, "America runs on Dunkin'."  That might very well be true.  The company's website boasts that today, Dunkin' Donuts is America's largest retailer of coffee-by-the-cup, serving nearly 1 billion cups of brewed coffee each year.

When people are in a rush, looking for that coffee fix, I bet they are not realizing how much Styrofoam is being used, and thrown away each year in the United States.  Each year Americans throw away 25 billion Styrofoam cups!  That is enough to circle the Earth 436 times.

Styrofoam products are hazardous not only to the environment, but also to your health!  Styrofoam is not biodegradable and leaks toxins into underground water supplies beneath landfills.  Some landfills incinerate their trash, which in turn produces millions of tons of polystyrene ending up as toxic airborne ash.  Even though Styrofoam cups are labeled with a # 6, it is not accepted in most curbside recycling programs.  If a company is able to recycle it, it is only done in small quantities due to the high costs.  When stored or heated (like your piping hot cup of Dunkin' Donuts joe) packaging such as Styrofoam may leach the potential carcinogen styrene into the food or drinks that container is holding.

If we could convince Dunkin%u2019 Donuts to switch to paper products like their competitors Wawa and Starbucks, that would be a great first step.  It would be even better if  they could turn it up another notch and start using post-consumer recycled paper, bamboo, or corn plastics all of which are easily renewable resources that can either be recycled or would biodegrade.  Unless people start speaking up, they won%u2019t be swayed to change at all.  Think about what an easy way this would be to reduce 1 billion Styrofoam cups a year!

They can use paper cups for lattes, why not for the rest of the billion cups of coffee that Dunkin Donuts sells each year?  Speak out!  Tell Dunkin Donuts that you want paper cups across the board!  They won't do anything without your input!

As someone born and raised on Dunkin Donuts I have quite a loyalty to both the coffee and the donuts. However, I have recently stopped buying Dunkin Donuts coffee because it is served in a styrofoam cup. Of course, I could ask for the paper cup that lattes are served in. However, I do not want to support a company that continues to use sytrofoam when a safe, easily recycled paper cup is available in their own stores. Please get rid of the sytrofoam cups. I miss those vanilla cream donuts!

We no longer want the unnecessary impacts on our environment and our health. There are many alternatives that can be used. There is no excuse for your ignorance!

Paper is a fine alternative. While technically speaking styrofoam may be recyclable, in reality it doesn't much get recycled, which means it's probably destined to be with us as-is forever. Yikes.

I have been boycotting DD's coffee and other products since this past summer when I started buying iced coffee daily from Dunkin Donuts. Styrofoam with an iced coffee you ask? Yes its true. I noticed at various DD's that often I would be served an iced coffee in a plastic cup doubled up with a large styrofoam cup. The only answer I could come up with as to why this would be done was that maybe there was some spillage down the side of the cup and instead of wiping the outside of the cup off they added an extra Styrofoam shield. Is this a regular practice of DD's? I hope not. I quit going there for iced coffee and paid more at starbucks and local businesses. I noticed they still use styrofoam to hold their hot beverages which is just unacceptable. Change your use of Styrofoam today DD's! You can be sure I will not buy another cup of coffee or anything else for that matter in your wasteful chain.

I'm not buying anymore coffee from you until you stop using Styrofoam and you put recycling bins in your stores.

I refuse to purchase coffee anywhere that styrofoam is used - perhaps if everyone did the same, they wouldn't have a choice but to switch!

It takes 10 times the amount of water to make a Styrofoam cup as it does to wash a ceramic one. Styrofoam doesn’t breakdown and it releases chemicals when it gets wet that contaminates food and water that it touches. Styrofoam is made from a petrochemical. The ingredients are highly toxic and can only be degraded by noxious bacteria that are laboratory grown. Disposal of Styrofoam products results in the overfilling of landfills with bulky, non-degrading plastics. Styrofoam contains chemicals that over time and continuous exposure can build up in the body and cause many health issues including cancer. One U.S. EPA study of human fat biopsies found styrene residues in every single sample. Please offer a reusable(plastic/ceramic) and recyclable(paper) option.

Why would Dunkin' Donuts continue to use expensive, unsustainable and chemically unhealthy styrofoam to make a cup, when paper is a biodegradable and recyclable option? Better yet, just use a travel mug!! They keep your drink hotter for longer anyway!

I've been enjoying Dunkin' Donuts coffee since I was 16, and to be perfectly honest that coffee never lasted long enough for the styrofoam cup to make a difference in temperature. I already enjoy Dunkin' Donut's small coffees in a paper cup, why not a medium and a large?
