It%u2019s a question Auburn City councilman Kevin Hanley has put forward to city staff.
In a recent memo, Hanley asks city manager Bob Richardson and Police Chief Valerie Harris to consider a pitbull ordinance to be placed on a future city agenda."
I urge everyone, right now, to contact Kevin Hanley and the City Manager and let them know you oppose any ordinance targeting a specific breed of dog (and remind them that, pursuant to Section 31683 of the California Food and Agricultural Code, no city or county can ban or restrict ownership of Pit Bulls, except for basic spay/neuter laws).

It is important that we deal with this promptly and in a firm, decisive manner. It would not be beyond past precedent for Hanley to seek yet another change to state law to permit even greater BSL here in California. Furthermore, if Auburn goes the BSL route, in light of recent events portrayed in the media, expect many other CA cities to follow very soon!

It's about responsible ownership not the breed. Good Owner = Good Dog. Focus on the laws around owner responsibilities. Pitbulls are one of the most mis-represented and misclassified breeds. Media hype and general classification without balance of facts and bigger picture of issues only derails our government resources, dollars, engery and cause a wake of ineffective pain for all! Be smart - focus on the right issues!

I agree with many of the comments below regarding prejudice. If we allow stereotyping of a breed to begin, where does it stop? Are we then only going to be allowed to have those yappy toy breeds within city limits? Besides I am a firm believer that there are no bad dogs only bad owners, and it is not the innocent animal who is only acting how it has been conditioned to act.
The dog is not responcible for being bread to fight, it is wrotten owners that make them that way. Politicians should maybe spend more time creating stricter laws for people who mistreat their dogs instead of ignorantly banning breeds.

Any animal can be a dangerous animal if it is abused, we saved a pit bull from an abusive owner and once he realized that he was loved and we wouldn't hurt him he was the best dog anyone could have asked for. You never would have known he was ever abused. It's not the animal that needs to be punished it is the people who are not taking proper care of them and treating them wrong.

I think that Auburn City pit bull owners should be restricted to 1 per household. The animal should be neutered or spayed and the animal should be placed on the dangerous dog list. I also think that a severe fine should be imposed on those that don't comply. I also think if this is adopted it should be seriously enforced. There have been far too many pit bull attacks in the county. You don't hear about people being attacked by Border Collies or Bassett Hounds. Let's deal with this once and for all.

As the owner of 2 sweet and loving pit bulls, I know that well raised and trained pet pit bulls are no danger to the public. My dogs go to play groups where they play with dozens of other dogs and are around lots of people and they have never tried to harm a person or an animal. They are very affectionate and eager to please and are the clowns of the dog world. They both graduated from obedience classes. My female pit bull won the Dog Star Award at our dog club (all breeds) in August 2009 for being so loving, sweet,and funny. Pit bulls are an asset to society in the hands of responsible owners.

The people who support banning these dogs are not informed enough, please visit people that have owned Pit Bulls as family dogs before judging so harshly. Laws passed that are intended to eliminate Pit Bulls are wrong. There are more people hurt by Labs than Pits according to statistics. Please don't ban an entire breed for the actions of a few animals and their faulty owners. Good training makes good dogs. Any breed of dog can be vicious and can bite -- but dogs that are brought up with love, discipline, affection and exercise, who are well socialized and who are not allowed to run loose are wonderful additions to any community. Please do not punish an entire breed of dog that has been given a bad reputation because of the uses that bad owners put them to!

I am so sick an tired of a bunch of non dog trained politicians thinking that the Pit Bulls are dangerous because they are Pit Bulls. That is like saying black people are dangerous because they are black. Before these unskilled dog people pass ignorant laws, involve professionals ask their advise.
