The deer on Vancouver Island have a people problem. Human population has tripled over the past decade, and housing developments and new roads have sprung up all over the island. Human/deer encounters have escalated.
A deer cull is imminent in communities all over Vancouver Island in the upcoming months. Some community members are calling and writing their city halls with complaints of deer eating their pansies and leaping into the path of their vehicles, and the only solution is to bring out the hunters? Alternatives such as contraceptives and barriers have not been properly discussed by the current decision makers and the members of the public who believe these animals should be treated with respect.
We believe that humane alternatives should be considered by all municipalities, rather than killing. Taxpayers who have written to their city halls with complaints about deer in their gardens and on their roads aren't the only ones with deer on their minds.
We, the undersigned, want municipal governments on Vancouver Island to understand that the deer are valued by other taxpayers, and we believe they deserve a respectful, humane option in the quest to reduce human/deer clashes.
