Neuquén, so beautiful...and...another face of Neuquén, very sad and not at all beautiful.

Dear colleagues and friends,

I am asking you to take action *NOW*: this week in Neuquén, one of the loveliest and most touristic places in southern Argentina, it will be decided if the stray dogs are to be killed. This comes after 6 years of a no-kill and vaccination policy following a municipal law approved in 2002 to control the overpopulation of abandoned dogs solely through a program of mass sterilizations. This program, financed by the government and used in many places of the country with fantastic success, followed the killing (for many years using  gas chambers) of thousands of animals each year.

During the last 6 years, in spite of the allocation of adecuate funding, the money vanished but the government officials have not implemented the program in any of its facets and the dogs at the pound have been mistreated and appallingly neglected.

This state of affairs had led to the filing of an accusation in the criminal court against the officials responsible: Gustavo Bosio (veterinarian), Juan Carlos Roca  and Carlos Yanes, the same individuals involved in the killings before 2002 and the ones who have tried to get rid of the new law SEVEN times in the last 6 years! The authorities, instead of ordering an investigation and punishing the officials, wants that the law become "flexible" and that the killing be carried out again. The Neuquén Mayor, Lic. Martín Adolfo Farizano could not care less that the majority of the people does not wish to go back to the cruel killings of the dogs.

This Thursday the fate of many thousands of dogs will be decided, will Neuquén go back to the primitive, third world way of NOT controlling the numbers of stray dogs or will common sense and ethical management prevail, as the people demand? Our chances are not good but YOU can make the difference and stop the impending massacres if you ACT RIGHT NOW! Please send your message of protest to the addresses listed below the text.

Sample letter in Spanish (you can add your own words in English as well, making sure you tell them you will NOT visit their province if they go back to killing the dogs):

A las autoridades de Neuquén:

Es con horror que me entero de que las autoridades de Neuquén quieren volver a matar a los perros sin hogar y tienen a los animales de la perrera en muy crueles condiciones. A menos que Uds.cumplan la ordenanza 94767/02 y desistan de "flexibilizarla" para volver a la prehistoria del tercer mundismo, me encargaré de instar a mi familia, amigos y contactos a NUNCA ir de vacaciones a su provincia.

We the undersigned, want to urge you to honour the law with regards to article 94767/02.

You have received funding to apply a vaccination programm with regards to the stray dog population in Neuquén.

We would like you to honour this law set up in 2002, and listen to the wish of the majority of the people, to not kill the stray dog population by gas chamber, but to apply the vaccination programm with the funding received from your Government.

Neuquén is a lovely place to visit and your humane treatment of the stray dog population will be approved by many to come visitors.

We thank you for taking the time to read our petition.
