Voice for Colin, Baby Humpback destroyed...Why?

The Baby Humpback known as Colin the Whale, was euthanased under the instructions of National Parks and Wildlife Service NSW, Australia, on August 22nd, 2008. This petition is for a thorough investigation into the killing and treatment of the baby humpback from 17th August through to 22nd August, 2008, and the disposal and autopsy of the whale calf by NPWS, Toronga Zoo, Seaworld, RSPCA and ORCCA. The decision to kill her was based on an examination by vets who said she was sick,  but those who made that decision did not even know what sex the calf was until after they killed her. We want the investigation to disclose the reason by those involved for killing the baby whale and all evidence  supporting their reason. On the day of the killing the reason given by authorities was that the calf was too sick, however evidence of the calf being very active the night before and fighting for life for up to 40 minutes the morning they injected her, even after being chased and harassed most of the previous night by those who killed her, suggests otherwise. Witnesses support that those who killed her did so with cruelty, jabbing her 7 or 8 times, tying her up without even waiting for the drug to take effect, towing her tied up and struggling for 40 minutes . The investigation also needs to disclose the exact treatment all week by NPWS nsw, of the calf, and why they would not let all those who were offering to, feed the calf, knowing the calf was in a sheltered, natural environment, not in the way of human activity, and did not need to be removed from there for the duration required for milk feeding.  Why were those who said they had the capability and means to feed then rehabitate the calf in the future, not allowed to try.  Every single aspect of the treatment and domination of this calf by authorities, the so called qualified decision to destroy the calf and how exactly it was qualified, the way the calf was killed, how the calf died, needs an open investigation. This extreme act of cruelty for the sake of convenience, must never happen again. Please support the baby whale who had the potential for a life free in the ocean and who we could have tried to help, and as humans we had the capacity to try.

We the undersigned, wish for a thorough investigation into the treatment and killing of the baby whale at Pittwater by NPWS nsw, RSPCA, Toronga Zoo, Seaworld, ORCCA, from august 17 - 22nd 2008 and the days following regarding autopsy and disposal of the body and photographic evidence of the shark bites or injuries. We want an investigation into the treatment of the whale during the killing, how the whale died, how many times the whale was injected, why the whale was towed with ropes for 40 minutes, how the vets and NPWS who claimed the whale was too sick to live as the reason for killing the baby whale, came to that conclusion, the exact nature and details of their examinations. What qualifications those vets who assessed the whales condition have. Why authorities chased and hunted the whale with loud vibrating motors and for how long the previous night, exactly how much time did they spend in close proximity to the whale each of the days from 17 August to 22nd August, why, when offers were made to feed and rehabitate the whale by those with the means to, were they refused. Why did NPWS go out of their way to make sure no one gave the baby whale the necessity it needed which was food? How was the attempt made to take the calf to sea during the week, how did they get it out to sea, how long did they stay near it once it was out to sea, how long did this operation take and on what day and who undertook it? What are the exact qualifications of NPWS who made the decision to kill the whale, and under what qualified reasons did they do so,  what drug and how much was administered to kill the whale and what are the exact times of every injection into the calf?
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, the life of an animal means a lot to many, many people. We would like a thorough investigation into this so that we will know that some circumstances surrounding the death of this whale calf will never happen again, we would like to know why some actions were taken with regard to the young life of this calf and none of the obvious alternatives such as feeding, when the calf was actively trying to feed, were tried. The calf was in a natural, sheltered environment and did not need to be removed from there had feeding been successful. It is a tragic loss to many that no attempt was ever made and we would like the investigation to cover the  reasons for this so that we will all be more informed next time. So much could have been gained by a little effort to feed this whale.

this disturbs me gratly & sickens me to think that there are human beings in this world who can without any remorse take the life of an innocent wild spirit

Why do humans too often resort to killing instead of healing and helping animals in need! Please do right by baby Colin and look into her unnecessary death!!!

While watching this story unfold back in August, I was disgusted with the way the baby was treated and I feel more should have and could have been done to save her. Where are these autopsy reports that they said they would release? I think they do not want to release them because they will show a calf not on the brink of death like the thought, but instead one that could have been saved if they would have just tried harder. I cried when I say what they had done and I wish I could have been there to show the authorties my disapproval in person.

It was not mankinds decision to euthanize this animal- and because they made it their decision- we will never know if she could have survived with our help. We made the decision based on laziness. She fought up until the end- an end that was not her makers decision-

Just terribly sad for poor Collette(Colin) and no news on autopsy results. I am believeing they found nothing wrong with the baby whale. An atrocity that ordinary Australians weren't even allowed to help Collete to survive.
