This age group needs a ton of rest and cannot be "put down" early to compensate for that. Not to mention the "free time" in the afternoon!! What will these kids be doing, think about it people!! Who's the grown up here?! Talk about misery starting at what, 6:30 am to start the day. They have the rest of their lives to be doing that routine.

Does there need to be over 1 hour between the 2 start times? It seem excessive, since traffic will be bad prior to Madison's start time, not after.

THERE HAVE BEEN MANY STUDIES WHICH SHOW THAT PRE-TEEN AND TEENAGE STUDENTS NEED 10-12 HOURS OF SLEEP PER NIGHT IN ORDER TO DEVELOP PROPER BRAIN FUNCTION. IN ORDER TO WAKE UP AND BE AT SCHOOL BY 7;20 AM THEY WOULD NEED TO BE IN BED BY 6:00 PM--RIDICULOUS.

7:20am is an unreasonable time for school to begin. This does not promote a proper learning environment. Please reconsider as a start time even 30 minutes later would be better. As Lake Elementary is scheduled to start at 8:30am, a start time of 7:45am would provide 45 minutes between start times. This is a reasonable expectation that would be sufficient to resolve traffic issues.

7:20am is too early for Madison to start, cutting the zero period isn't fair either,Why is a change needed again?

Are you kidding me???????????????? 7:20 First period is going to be a total waste of time. Second, I smell trouble in the afternoon with these kids roaming the streets.

We urge VUSD to reconsider a 7:20 a.m. start time for any student. It is far too early, especially for those in elementary and middle schools. Please, let us first consider what is best for our children.

Obviously there is no simple solution on start times for both Madison and Lake schools due to poor planning in having them next door to each other. I don't think any elementary or middle school student should start school as early as 7:20 am. I recommend having Madison start at least 20 minutes later (7:40 am) and pushing Lake's start from 8:30 am back to accommodate whatever time spread is necessary for traffic, busses, staggered release times, etc.
# 51:
8:38 am PDT, Jun 23, Bill Porter, California
Plain and simple, 7:20AM is simply too early of a start time. There is a wealth of studies that show that this would not be in the best academic interest of the student. A 1:20PM release time is also asking for trouble as many of the kids will be forced into hours of unsupervised time. This schedule change seems related more towards the interest of the faculty and less about students.

This years start time for Madison and Lake were perfect the way they were. 7:20 is too early to get kids to school on time. I wish the start times had not been changed and would go back to the time they were.

That is outrageous! Middle schoolers are grumpy enough in the morning, as my parents vividly remember me at that age, and that school district wants them in class even earlier? What kind of thinking is that? It is NOT in the best interest of the children/students to do this. Ohhh, maybe it's so the adults who work at those schools can finish work earlier. I don't know. It just seems so odd to me for anyone to want to make kids be at school earlier when 8:05 seemed plenty early to me!

I don't agree with the start time of 7:20am. Children will be dropped of by 7:ooam. At times it would still be dark. The dist. needs to think of the safety of their students first.

I don't understand arbitrarilly changing school times, to suit who's needs? I was under the impression that it was the schools policy to do whats in the best interest of the student. 7:20am???? Are you serious??? You succumb to the Lake Elementary petitions and now lets impose the change on middle schoolers? Thanks, thats a well thought out plan.

As, I shopkeeper, I dislike the students loitering around my shop. A early start time and an early release time, with lots of extra time to loiter around my shop. I frown upon this decision.

# 35:

No student should start school at 7:20! Younger children are still impacted because parents will be having to wake them to be ready to take their older sibling to middle school. Middle schoolers whose parents can't pick them up after school due to work are going to be left to their own devices.
# 34:
9:27 am PDT, Jun 21, Susan Eubanks, California
Statists show middle school age children need more sleep. Stats also show teenagers get into more trouble during the hours after school while their parents are working. Let's think of the kids. What 12-14 year old goes to bed before 10:00? How can they be expected to be awake and ready to learn at 7:30 in the morning. How about we offer more buses so we don't have the drop off conflict with Lake. Is that the reason for the change? Kids can't walk as the crow fly's. That's another ridiculous standard determining if a child is elegible for the bus. VUSD you should be ashamed of yourselves. I think it's time for a new Board! People that actually care about the kids.

No school should start that early! Studies have shown that middle school and high school students need even more sleep than elementary children. Most parents drive their kids to school and cannot leave elementary aged children home alone while they take their older kids to school at 7:20 so all ages of children are affected whether their school starts that early or not. They all must get up early and they all will be sleep deprived. Why can't Madison start at 8:35? Lake is now starting at 9:10 so that should not be a traffic problem? Please consider what's best for the children!!!

Unfortunatly I don't know anyone who likes the idea of the Middle school starting at 7:20 in the morning. Parents or children. I have a feeling if this is going to be the starting time, they will have a very hard time getting the children there on time. You may see tardiness and absences go up and scores go down. I would not change the time to 7:20.

7:20 was way too early for the elementary schools to start, and "somebody" realized that and fixed it - what's it going to take for "somebody" to wake up and fix this problem, too??? Our kids deserve better. (Why all these schedule changes, anyway????)

A start time of 8:05 is a more realistic start time for working parents AND non-working parents as well as for the kids (especially those involved in Sports which we all know is a worthy pastime and instills integrity and healthy lifestyles).

Dear Board, A start for Madison Middle School or any Middle School at 7:20AM is completely ridicules. There has been studies made of this and you should read the result that they came up with. IT IS TOO EARLY FOR THIS AGE GROUP!! It does affect the learning ability and focus ability!!! Lets think about what is best for our kids now, NOT WHAT IS THE MOST CONVENIENT FOR THE ADULTS, O.K. PLEASE RECONSIDER THIS ASAP!!! THANK YOU, THE PEEL'S

My child is a Madison kid, getting out at of school so early to me is just asking for trouble. With most parents working and may have no way to pick up their kids what do the kids do ?? Why do the hours of school keep changing ?? I feel that the elementary school kids should start a little later than the middle schools kids but don;t go to such an extreme to have the kids start at 7:20. You are just looking out for yourselves and what is not best for the kids.

I don't have children, but too early is too early. I have collectively 10 Teachers and Professors in my family. Children or anyone can't focus and concentrate THAT early in the morning. They're barely awake!

The whole idea of starting late for middle school was after studies showed that when childrn reach middle school age, their sleep patterns change. They fall asleep later and wake up later. Working parents are complaining that they have no way of getting their kids to school when we start late. Well, what are those kids going to do when the are out so early? The stores in the area are complaining about early drop offs near the store. Well, there will be a lot more kids hanging around after school. Studies also show most kids get into trouble( drugs, drinking, sex) between the hours of 2pm-6pm. Most of those kids would be sleeping instead if we start later. Please have Madison be a late start school, for the sake of the children.
# 15:
12:15 pm PDT, Jun 20, Donti Burgner, California
This is a ridiculous idea. Our children need there sleep in order to receive the education they deserve. Studies have showed that children at these ages learn better later in the morning. Also, with so many parents working this will put many children home alone or in after school care. This is a lose lose situation. I certainly hope you will reconsider.
# 14:

7:20 is TOO EARLY for the Middle Schoolers, we all know that the studies show that Middle and High Schoolers do much better with a late start time; last week Madisons' start time was too have been moved from 8:55am to 8:35am and then all of a sudden this week we were ambushed with a 7:20 start time. It needs to move to a later time.
# 13:

The early start and earlier release is not appropriate for middle school students. Please reconsider and readjust the times as you see the parents of these students being affected are requesting.
# 12:
11:25 am PDT, Jun 20, Teresa Parker, California
This early start time is going to leave a huge negative impact on not only the students and their families, but Madison as well...Between all the homework and sports activities, our kids will NOT get enough sleep and therefore will lead to alot more absences/tardies and of course much lower test scores...not to mention the safety issues with the kids walking to school in the dark and being unsupervised after school...most of us parents who work feel comforted by the fact our kids are only home alone maybe an hour until we get home but with the early start they will now be unsupervised for many hours and that is not acceptable...I hope the board seriously reconsiders this change...

Middle school kids are our future! It is our responsibility to maximize their experience by setting an appropriate start time and by encouraging community involvement. VUSD will get more local participation in the form of time and material donations if they listen to these petitioners and set a reasonable schedule, like the one the board initially adopted.
# 10:
10:59 am PDT, Jun 20, Jill Leahey, California
I strongly disagree with the VUSD board's decision to overturn the start time of the middle schools in the district. 7:20 is an inappropriately early time for these preteens to start school. At this age, they need their rest and it's hard for them to go to bed early, as many of them are involved in sports and other activities, as well as homework and projects. This is a big mistake, as studies have shown the importance of enough sleep when taking tests for school. I'm sure the test scores will reflect this in the future.
# 9:
10:57 am PDT, Jun 20, Andrea Erwin, California
A 7:20am school day start time will be a hinderance to our children's learning capabilities. Later morning sleep patterns offer optimal readiness in their mental and emotional development during this stage of their growth. This early time also: 1) brings children walking to school in the dark 2) puts undue stress on family schedules with wide gaps in sibling school start times 3) releases the students too early in the day (especially on Wednesdays when they will have an early release of 12:03) at a time when they're still peaked for learning readiness. This schedule was not well thought-out, and deserves the thorough consideration of the students and families affected by said schedule. -Andrea Erwin

Such an early start, means a very early release and too much wasted unsupervised afternoon time at home. Not to mention, sports run late up to 9pm in the evening. The kids are not getting enough sleep.

Those of us with children in both schools are still in a bind because we can't leave the younger ones home while we transport the older ones to school. Therefore, they must get up and get ready early putting them right back into the same situation. We will have middle school children walking to school in the dark on busy Lake Boulevard and on deserted side streets. The traffic on Melrose will be insane with both RBV and Madison starting and ending at the same time. This will impact our entire Shadowridge community, not just our VUSD community. 7:20 doesn't work for ANYBODY.
