Wal-Mart, Educate Your Employees About Service Dogs

Target:
Wal-Mart Corporation
Wal-Mart's corporate policy is to allow service dogs in its stores and many people with service dogs have reported good experiences with Wal-Mart, however it is often the case that their written policy and what managers are telling their employees are two different things.  It is very common for service dog owners to be told by Wal-Mart greeters that "only seeing eye dogs are allowed".

In March of 2007, the International Association of Assistance Dog Partners wrote a letter to Wal-Mart about the problem.  In this letter, citing a study recently completed, IAADP stated:

More than half the respondents reported they had positive experiences shopping at Wal-Mart. In fact, some individuals had high praise for the stores they patronized. However, out of the 134 surveys returned by assistance dog partners, we documented a substantial number of complaints about negative experiences at Wal-Mart. A few respondents went into detail about these distressing incidents. IAADP learned it was not just a local or regional issue, since negative incidents were reported from every region of the United States.

IAADP offered to help Wal-Mart establish an educational program but nothing is being done.  Please sign this petition to ask Wal-Mart to ensure that service dog owners nationwide can walk into the front doors of their stores without being harassed, humiliated or turned away!

EDIT July 24, 2008:  So many people have signed the petition and offered their stories of harassment by Wal-Mart that it is no longer necessary to include information on a specific case within the petition itself, therefore the information that previously appeared here regarding a specific case has been removed.  This petition is not about any specific case.  It is about a definite pattern of harassment of Service Dog teams nationwide.  Since the comments provided by signatories provide some level of evidence of this, the specific case information which appeared here previously has been removed.

EDIT -- July 25, 2008 --  Have you experienced similar problems with SD access?  SHARE YOUR STORY HERE.......after signing the petition, of course.

My girlfriend was denied entery into Wal-Mart because she a service dog. She is in a wheel chair and we had just gotten the dog so the dog was being acclamated to her. The door greeter did not have a problem but an Ast. Manager stopped her and gave her a hard time about it.

My complaint to walmart corporate.... Recently, I visited my local walmart with my service dog and his trainer (who was handling him) to do some shopping. He was wearing his extremely visible service dog vest and leash. Upon entering the store we were askied by a greeter if he was a service dog to which we replied yes and she left it alone. Unfortunately there was an assistant manager standing near who very rudely said "only seeing eye dogs are allowed in the store". The trainer explained the Florida law on service dogs being allowed inside any store and the assistant manager still argumentally refused us access. She very loudly and clearly stated to us and the several other customers entering the store "Corporate told us to not to let in any animals other than seeing eye dogs". After several minutes of attitude she contacted the store manager by radio and then argued that the dog would be allowed in but I have to be the one to hold the leash. I am in a wheelchair and have limited mobility. Service dogs do not require a leash since some disabilities make holding a leash impossible while maintaining mobility. The assistant manager got annoyed hearing my trainer cite ADA and Florida law to her so she finally just walked away saying "let em in" over her shoulder. this experience was embarassing and humiliating. Every day life is difficult enough having a major disability without wlamart store management discriminating against myself and my service dog. This experience has taught me a lot about walmart's training policies for their employees. Upon researching walmart's discrimination of service dogs with other disabled individuals, I have found several incidents dating back to 2004 so this ensures me corporate is not taking it as serious as needed. I have no problems avoiding walmart as we have other stores that have welcomed my service dog and not questioned him, but the treatment I received is illegal. I am considering contacting the ADA and Department of Justice to file a complaint along with the Tallahasse news to avoid any other individuals with service dogs receiving the same treatment I and apparently several others across the country have received.

My wife has a Maltese seizure detection dog. She is 100% accurate and has predicted seizures for my wife up to 5 hours ahead of time. She was "home taught" as many seizure detection dogs are. She wears a bright yellow cape with a "service dog" patch on it when we she is working, visible to all except ignorant store employees. Walmart is shameful! We have had nothing but trouble from the Arnold Missouri Walmart. They have used every method they can think of to deney access. They have had their greeter stop us each and every time. We are there more than once a week so they can't say they don't know us. They have had several employees come up to us in the spam of an hour to harass us over and over. The latest was the assistant manager told us that we couldn't have her in the cart because "We sell food and the FDA told us not to allow it. She has to be on the floor". I told him that because our service dog is only 11 lbs. she could be injured by other shoppers if on the ground and in addition she can't do her job down there as she needs to make eye contact with my wife. She always sits on a blanket we bring and also, what about the fact that the carts spend much of their time outdoors where birds poop on them? What about the babies with leaky diapers in the carts? No answer from him. While we were wasting 20 minutes talking with this idiot, Daisy started giving my wife the "look" and I told him to look at Daisy, she is telling us that my wife will have a seizure soon. Later that afternoon my wife did have a seizure. THAT MANAGER CAUSED IT BY THE HARASSMENT HE GAVE MY WIFE! It does no good to write to the home office, I have tried that several times. Twice I wrote for their policy on service dogs in carts and they ignored my request twice. Promises are made to train their people, but are not kept (I know because I ask friends who work there if they were retrained). We have had the same trouble in 6 other Walmarts across the country, so this must be a corporate policy of harassment. By the way, I called the FDA and they told me that they could care less about dogs in carts, it's not their concern! I'm not a "Walmart hater" as some are, but now I hope the government sticks it to them big time for these ADA violations. They make me and my family sick!

Ignorance of this policy is inexcusable. All managers should be aware of this policy and all employees should be trained to welcome service dogs and their owners

The WalMarts that I go in with my seizure alert dog has been acceptable of him. He wears a jacket with service dog credentials. I only had one greeter giving me a hard time. I walked off after explaining and told him to go to his manager. There were no problems after that.

This is the year 2008 I think it is ridiculous that your employees are not told this when they are hired. Service animals are a necessity.

I urge all service dog teams, if denied access or harassed, to: * notify a manager (although that is not often helpful), * ask the employee/manager to sign a letter (write this up ahead of time and carry a few blank copies with you) stating that they are denying access and have been made aware that this is an unlawful act according to the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act, * allow the business to call the Police if they threaten to do so (and then get a police report), * contact the corporate office to file a complaint, * file a Federal complaint, * inform friends/family/anyone you meet that this business is NOT service dog friendly. People with disabilities shouldn't feel embarrassed, WalMart SHOULD feel embarrassed.

Seriously, this has been a law in effect for quite some time that service dogs are allowed into your business. In this current state of economic downfall, it seems business should be doing all that they can to keep their custumers! I personally do not have a service dog, but have friends that do and you are jeopardizing my patronage as well!

don't worry about the service dogs, worry about the shop lifters! service dogs are much better behaved than most children (and parents!) that I have seen in Wal-mart. Wal-mart has a lot of shame to hide, this is why I stopped making them my shopping grounds!

The Wal-Marts in our area also used to have a real problem with the smaller service dogs, but due to the efforts of a lady with a Pomeranian who is her hearing assist dog, I believe they are more informed now. It does need to be part of your new employee training, though, since this is often a problem.

I have heard horrible stories about handlers and their Service Dogs being denied access to WalMarts and other stores. I have also seen what education can do. Each one, teach one. A WalMart I went into was allowing a greeter to bring in Service Dogs she was training. This individual dedicated herself to educate (train) the dogs under her care and the public as they entered the store. Bravo to her WalMart manager for allowing her to have this opportunity. Imagine what the world would be like if all store managers allowed their employees the same advantage. Johnny, my SD, and myself have only been questioned once before we were allowed into the restraunt. I've lived out in the country for about 15 yrs and in this time only seen one other team, a Guide Dog and its handler. Needless to say I was apprehensive as to what we might face. No fear needed, the Guide Dog and it's handler had paved the way for us. Each one, teach one.

I go to 4 different WalMarts in Southern California. The only one that I have NOT been harrassed by greeter is the one in San Dimas off of Arrow Highway. In the other 3, I am constantly told I cannot bring in my fully vested service dog; she also wears her CA SD identification medalian. I have also had store employees follow me around the store throughout my shopping session. Please initiate and systematic educational program about disabled people who need service dogs in order to mitigate their disability.

Service dogs are so important to the welfare and wellbeing of their owners and the people they assist. They must be looked at as a friendly helper, and not a dog.

WalMart, you need to take responsibility for educating your employees. I have had access problems, having an owner trained Service dog, and it just should not happen. ALL Service dogs have the right to accompany their handler. IAADP has been generous in offering to educate you. Take them up on it. We will not be quiet any longer. We have equal rights to goods and services.

If my service dog and I are not welcome, I will tell my friends not to shop there either. And I have a lot of friends in the Portland area. Please rectify this immediately. I intend to visit both of your stores close to me and file federal complaints if not admitted.

My Husband and I own an Assistant dog, though I rarely have need to take her to stores with me, I am fully aware of many disabled folks that have been stopped by uneducated individuals that are employed in restaurants, retail store etc. Any dog that aids a person in accomplishing a normal daily activity is a service/assistance dog. The Federal Government only permits two questions to be asked of the person with such a dog. 1. Are you disabled? 2. Is your dog a service/assistant dog? No other details or requirements are permitted. Those that are denied access or harrassed in any manner are subject to charges being filed against them and their respective establishments.
