Wilmington needs more midwives!!!

We want more midwives, not less!  In light of the history of CNM programs being dismantled here in Wilmington, we need to let the hospital know that they must become more supportive of midwifery care as there is an increasing demand for these services in our community.
We the undersigned represent families in your community who wish to have Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) as a birthing option at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.  It is our understanding that there is currently a policy in place which requires an Obstetrician to be on premesis while a CNM is laboring with her patient.  We feel this places an undue burden on the OBs without increasing safety for the women and babies they serve.  We ask that you remove this policy and take further action to hire an appropirate number of Certified Nurse Midwives to serve our community.  Nationally, 10% of the births are attended by CNMs.  We would need 12-15 CNMs to meet this need.
