The fight for a cure for psoriasis has gone global

Target:
U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives
October 29, 2009 is World Psoriasis Day, a global effort to raise public awareness about psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and the seriousness of these diseases. Please take a minute to sign this petition asking our members of Congress to co-sponsor H.R. 930/S. 571, the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Research Cure and Care Act of 2009, in honor of World Psoriasis Day.

Over 125 million individuals worldwide are affected by psoriasis - a chronic, painful and disabling disease of the immune system that appears on the skin. There is no cure for psoriasis and limited effective, safe and affordable treatment options to manage the condition. Psoriasis is the most prevalent autoimmune disease in the U.S., with as many as 7.5 million Americans affected. By co-sponsoring the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Research, Cure and Care Act of 2009, our members of Congress can support the psoriasis community and help move us closer to a cure.

Sign the petition today and advance the fight for a cure for psoriasis.
Your action makes a difference!

Dear Members of Congress,

October 29, 2009, is World Psoriasis Day, which is a global effort to raise public awareness about psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and the seriousness of these diseases.

As your constituent, I wish to express to you my concern that too many people suffer needlessly from psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis due to incorrect or delayed diagnosis, inadequate treatment options and insufficient access to care. It is my hope that someday soon, a cure for psoriasis will be discovered. Until that time, it is important to raise awareness around the globe and in our own country about the need for further research toward a cure. In honor of World Psoriasis Day, I ask that you co-sponsor H.R. 930/S. 571, the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Research, Cure and Care Act of 2009. This legislation will expand psoriasis research efforts in order to understand the causes of psoriatic diseases, improve access to care and find a cure. Thank you for your support.

My sister suffers from psoriasis so I've seen, first hand, just how much this disease impacts people's lives. She has tried so many different treatments but nothing is a real cure. This disease has lowered her self-esteem and self-confidence, which is so sad to see because she's a very outgoing person who loves to be the center of attention. But, as the psoriasis got worse, she's been shying away from the spotlight. Please make it possible for research to be done to find a cure for this disease so my sister can be herself again.

I am 22 years old and I have had psoriasis for 8 or 9 years now. I am a senior in college and I can honestly say the disease has greatly impacted my life. Last year I woudln't go out with my friends, using my boyfriend as an excuse, but the truth was that I was too embaressed to be seen in public without wearing a sweater and a pair of pants. The only problem is, when you go to school in South Carolina, that attire is not often comfortable to wear. Friends invite me to go out on their boats in the summer and I reject the invitation because I won't be seen in a bathing suit. I've lived on the beach my entire life and now the only way I will lay out in the sun is if it is in my backyard with my family. Besides the fact that I am embaressed to show my legs or elbows, the disease can be extremely irritating. I find myself scratching vigorously only to continue itching. The pain can be unbearable at times because the plaque psoriasis feels so raw. I've had people call me a leper and make fun of me, even my own friends. People think it's ok because you laugh it off, but you have to learn to do that becuse if I got worked up over every instance that hurt my feelings, I'd be a miserable person. Growing up I was always one of the most outgoing people you could come across with an extremely high self-esteem. Now, I feel ugly all the time. I feel nasty and gross for lack of better words. I can't get mad at people for not wanting to touch me or be near me because I would think the same thing; that I could be contageous. I've explained the disease to hundreds of people only to be asked again and again what it is and have people not believe me. I just want to be the old me again. I'm tired of hiding behind longsleeves and pants. I'm a free-spirited young woman and I would give anything to look the way I used to. This disease truly is life-changing and mentally, emotionally, and physically draining.

I have had this disease for 40 years and it's no fun. I would not wish it on any Senator or Congressman no matter how they voted on TARP. Please try to put partisanship aside and vote for some funding for this.

I cannot walk out of my house without wearing a hat. I am not ashamed of my hair, just the insurmountable degree of dead skin everyone must look at when I am spoken to. Please show your support to research this unbearable, disgusting skin disorder. Thanks for your consideration.

I have both psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. This horrible disease causes both emotional and physical pain. At this stage, supressing my immune system is the only treatment available to me. It's very scary to open yourself up to every disease and infection in order to ease some of your physical pain. Every day demands hours of useless 'skin care;' useless because by the next day you must start all over again. Take a good close look at pictures of this disease and imagine yourself and/or your children in this predicament. Please, please help find a cure.

I AM 48 YRS OLD HAVE LIVED IN PAIN FOR OVER 15 YRS.I HAVE PSORIATIC ARTHRITIS. IN 1995 DEVELOPED A PAINFUL RASH ON MY TORSO. IT WAS NEVER DIAGNOSED NOT THE TYPICAL ELBOWS, KNEES ETC. THEN THE PAIN STARTED IN MY BACK, HIPS AND KNEES. BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE THE TYPICAL HIP PAIN IN THE GROIN IT TOOK YEARS AND MANY CT SCANS AND MRIS. I ALSO DEVELOPED A VERY DISTINCTIVE LIMP WITH WALKING THAT WAS AGONY WHEN I WALKED ANY DISTANCE AT ALL. IN 2004 I HAD BILAT TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENTS AND IN 2008 BILAT TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENTS. ALTHOUGH IT HELPED THE PAIN SOMEWHAT IN THOSE JOINTS I STILL HAVE PAIN ALL OVER, IN MY BACK ESPECIALLY. DOING EVERYDAY THINGS, CLEANING, GROCERY SHOPPING, CARING FOR MY FAMILY IS A GREAT CHORE. I AM ALSO A NURSE ON A MED/SURG FLOOR WORKING 13 HOUR SHIFTS 3 DAYS PER WEEK. AFTER WORKING 2 DAYS IN A ROW THE NEXT DAY IS AGONY!! LIFE IS NO LONGER ENJOYABLE!! AND OF COURSE THERE IS DEPRESSION DUE TO ALL THIS. I LIVE ON MEDROL, VICODIN, AND HAVE TRIED TNF BLOCKERS. I AM STARTING REMICADE AGAIN IT SEEMS TO BE THE BEST FOR ME. I RECENTLY WAS ON SIMPONI BUT IT DIDN'T WORK LIKE REMICADE DOES. I WAS TAKING METHOTREXATE BUT I DON'T LIKE THE WAY IT MAKES ME FEEL, STOMACH UPSET, HAIR LOSS AND BREAKAGE. EVEN SLEEPING IS HARD. I WAKE UP EVERY TIME I TURN OVER, I HAVEN'T HAD A GOODNIGHTS SLEEP IN YEARS. THIS IS A HORRIBE DISEASE AND I KNOW THIS SOUNDS TERRIBLE BUT IF IT WERE CANCER AT LEAST YOU CAN BE CURED OR REMISSION OR DIE AND BE OUT OF YOUR MISSERY, BUT THIS DISEASE JUST GETS WORSE AND YOU CONTINUE TO LIVE. AND THE BIGGEST JOKE OF ALL IS I WENT TO APPLY FOR SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY BUT BECAUSE I STILL WORK I COULDN'T APPLY. YOU CAN'T BE WORKING AND APPLY SO MY QUESTION THEN WAS HOW AM I SUPPOSSED TO PROVIDE FOR MY FAMILY WHEN IT CAN TAKE YEARS TO GET SSI DISABILITY. I KNOW THERE PROBABLY WON'T BE A CURE IN MY LIFETIME BUT I HOPE THAT SOMEBODY, SOMEWHERE WILL FIND A CURE TO THIS HORRIBLE, DEBILITATING DISEASE FOR THE FUTURE. IF ANYONE READS THIS AND HAS ANY IDEAS TO HELP RELIEVE THE PAIN PLEASE EMAIL ME AT CHRISTABELLE2722@AOL.COM. THIS DOESN'T JUST EFFECT ME BUT MY FAMILY AS WELL, I CAN'T BE THE MOM I WANT TO BE TO MY 7 YEAR OLD AND ALSO TO MY 18 MONTH OLD GRANDSON!! IT TOTALLY SUCKS!!!!!!

My son has had psorisis for over 20 years, over 87% of his body. He has struggled terribly. He gave up getting married in the beginning. He has been alone his adult life. He is 40 yrs old. He is currently on Rememcade. It is a terrible disease. I have heard strange children and people whisper, loud enough for all of us to hear, look at that guy (his skin.) I have been a very sad Mommy for my child. But he is the one who has and still is suffering.

I have been suffering with psoriasis for 5 years now. thanks God only on my legs and thighs, but there are some days that I go bezerk with the itching and redness. Medication (2) help sometimes, but other they do not calm by discomfort. Please investigate, every day I know of more people suffering from this disease. There should be something in the air, food, water or others. This is a terrible sickness and I am sure there will be cure someday, unless the drug companies are not interested in doing so just their business is more important than to help people around. Thanks Also medications are very expensive in the United States. In Canada and in Europe they are much, much cheaper and it is a shame that in USA they only care to increase their earnings with our disease. HELP...

People with this disease deserve better access to treatments and ultimately a cure in the future. This piece of legislation can bring us closer than ever to the cure for this devastating disease. Approximately 7.5 million people in the United States alone live with psoriasis. It is time to finally recognize psoriasis as the serious disease that it is and put the appropriate funds towards finding the cure.
