Your Own God

Your Own God

Target:
Congress
Sponsored by:
Those of you who have seen old movies know that "under God" was not originally in the Pledge of Alligiance.  That phrase was added by Congress in the 1950's.  This is a petition, not to remove "under God", but to let each person replace it.  A Muslim would be able to say "one nation under Allah," a Hindu "under Krishna," and an atheist could say whatever they see fit.  Isn't that what America is supposed to be, a melting pot of cultures?

People should be able to express their beliefs however they want. Forcing someone to say something that they don't want to is plain wrong. Didn't we learn this stuff back in kindergarten? That forcing people to do something is wrong?

"Under God" should not be in the Pledge. If you are of a religious faith, you carry that in your heart all day long anyway. The United States of America is not a theological society and our pledge that all citizens say must represent our nation and not one faith or another. "Under God" was added in the 1950s by a man thinking it represented the American Dream and the ideas of Abraham Lincoln. He thought it made it more specific to the United States. We do not need "under God" to be said. The Pledge is meant for all American citizens to come together to show our allegiance to our nation. ALL Americans. That means people of all walks of life, all religions, those who do not follow a religion, men, women, all races, and so on. Every human being. That is what matters. A religious person carries their faith with them no matter what and taking "under God" out of the Pledge does not take that away from them. It is not necessary for everyone to say whatever suits them because we are showing our unity with the United States of America. That is the only part you have to say. Everything else is part of your own personal journey.

Who is the federal government to tell us we must say "under g-d"? Whose god did they mean when they added that phrase in the 50's? I should be able to say "under the Pantheon of Pantheons" if I choose to say the pledge at all. For that matter, shouldn't I, and everyone else, be able to invoke whichever deity/power/being is of our choosing when we swear to tell the truth so help me __ in a court of law? And to those of you who like the phrase "under G-d" and state that we all have G-d in our hearts, I have two questions: 1) Whose g-d do you mean? 2) Why are you signing this petition? Signing a petition means you support it!!

All of us are "under God" no-matter what religion one happens to be. One doesn't have to say it if one doesn't want to, so why the question. We all have God in our heart, no-matter what name it happens to be.
