YWCA Knoxville 2009 Week Without Violence

Target:

We have had ENOUGH! We are asking Knoxville residents to stop the violence against others.  Please sign the pledge and commit to not engage in, watch, listen to, or promote violent acts against others.

Violence in all its forms undermines our quality of life. It reaches into our cities, schools, work-places, and homes. It affects us all. The YWCA is spearheading a nationwide effort to unite individuals against violence in our communities. Learn better self control. Teach my young daughter to respect herself and others, to direct anger into healthy channels; find something to create, not someone to hit, kick, bite, or shout at. Practice martial arts to learn self discipline and self defense. Practice yoga for strengthening mind, body and commitment to peace. Peace starts with me/you/each individual. It is in our language, the jokes we tolerate, the adjectives we use in describing women, girls and religious figures. Challenge patriarchal views, rules and laws. Challenge "old boy" networks. Speak up as an advocate for people less fortunate, applying principles for nonviolent change. Encourage and educate women and girls. Compliment my sisters on their achievements and accomplishments. Express appreciation and admiration for my sisters, for caregivers (particularly of elderly people) and for gentle men who promote peace and social justice.

Violence can only impede the beauty, joy, and adventures in life; which is why I do not wish for its involvement in my life nor my community!

Thank you for this petition. Has a domestic violence survivor the help I hoped to receive from the court system to protect my daughter and I, has been non existent. It has actually been beneficial to the father. Proof or not, violence against women and children is ignored in the Knox County Juvenile Court system. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/5/in-support-of-lisa-and-bella-smith-2

I thank God that I have never been a victim of violence but I am so disheartened by daily reading in the paper and hearing daily on the news the devastating affects it is causing to our families and our communities. My husband and I are creating a quick resource link website with intervention and prevention resources at www.saveourblackbabies.com. We do realize that ALL children need to be saved and this resource is not to segregate asothers are welcome to use these resources, but we also feel the need to reach out a little more to our own communities as there is definitely a problem that needs to be addressed and soon. Thank you YWCA for creating this week!!! Awe will spread the word.
