Take Action for Sister Louise Lears

Take Action for Sister Louise Lears

Target:
Pope Benedict XVI, The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Most Rev. Raymond Burke, Prefect Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura

On Thursday, June 26, Archbishop Raymond Burke imposed penalities on Sister Louise Lears, Sister of Charity, for her support of women's full equality and justice in the Roman Catholic Church.

After six months of proceedings, the decree was issued the day before Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Burke to head the highest court in the Catholic Church, as the Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura in Rome.

Archbishop Burke of St. Louis imposed two penalties on Sister Lears, 1) the penalty of interdict, which means that she cannot participate in public worship in a ministerial capacity and cannot receive the Sacraments and 2) the penalty of prohibition from reception of a mission anywhere in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, which means she can no longer serve in her positions as a member of the Pastoral Team at St. Cronan's Catholic Church and as the Coordinator of Religious Education.

We the undersigned believe the penalties callously imposed on Sister Louise Lears-a Sister of Charity who has dedicated her life in service of the Catholic Church-is a prime example of the way women are often wrongly treated by the hierarchy in the Roman Catholic Church.

We support Sister Louise Lears in her life and ministry in the Church.  We oppose these penalties as way of dealing with differences and dissent.  Such misuse of Church discipline will not extinguish the widespread call for women's equality nor intimidate women into accepting marginal status within the Church.

Sister Louise has the support of millions of Catholics who seek only the gospel promise of equality and we demand that these penalties be revoked as quickly as possible.

Thank you.

I thank the Creator for women of courage such as Sister Louise Lears. She is speaking for thousands and thousands of us who do not have the geographical ability to make this kind of difference. Women's voices are being heard round the world and I pray for the day this kind of abuse by patriachs will no longer be allowed or tolerated. It is coming soon.

Sr Louise would be among Jesus' chosen disciples, for she truly lives out Gospel values at the expense of manmade church and canon rules and regulations. As Christians it is Jesus who we must focus upon, which sometimes put us in the 'martyrdom' status because we choose the Gospel over manmade 'laws, rules and regulations.' Like Mary (in the gospel narrative of Mary & Martha), Sr Louise has chosen the better, and it will not be taken away from her because she found a sense of restedness in her heart. The Gospel will always take precedence over Canon law or other manmade rules. Truly, the Roman Catholic Church believes this!

Sister Louise should not be chastised in this manner by the Church. There are more gentler ways in dealing with those whom the Church chooses to call into question with regards to their Ministry in the Church which God has called one to practice their Vocation.

Jesus taught us to speak the truth. How can the Catholic Church Hierarchy ever be justified to penalize Sister Louise for speaking TRUTH? It is injustice at its core!

This censure of Sister Louise Lears, of the Sisters of Charity, is an outrage! Since the Roman Catholic clergy abuse scandal became public in 2002, the Catholic Church has needed truly dedicated women to restore credibility and assist in the healing process. It's time for patriarchal prelates to stop playing their authoritarian games and enter the 21st century.

I commend Sr Louise for heeding the true voice of the Spirit within her. Let us pray for the patriarchy that the Spirit of Jesus stir it to right action.

It is totally unconscionable that such punitive measures are still validated in the 21st Century. Our Church is a community of believers, it should not be a center for the idolatry of the male image. While we are not a democracy, neither are we a monarchy. Jesus of Nazareth modeled a community that treats all (except those who “lord it over others,”) with respect and freedom of decision. Our Catholic documents are replete with messages about inclusion and justice. How is it that today, punitive actions are perpetrated on women who participate in the ordinations of other women and not on male clerics who participate in the same rituals? What is it about women that frightens the hierarchy? Neither female nor male should be censured for participating in the valiant attempt by some women to provide priestly ministry within our Church that is languishing from a supposed “priest shortage?” The measures taken by Archbishop Burke are counterproductive to the future well-being of our Catholic Faith Community. The measures are sin-full and we, the Catholic Church is in danger of death. 400 years from now will the Church be apologizing to women as we finally did to Galileo?

To deny a person's ability to complete the vocation to which they have been called is unAmerican and unacceptable. Sr. Louise Lear's difference of opinion with the bishop should by no means exclude her from participating in the Church or living out her vocation.

Tradition has guided the RC Church to burn accused heretics at the stake, to put accused unbelievers on a rack that stretched muscles and broke bones until they confessed their "sins." Women were not just inferior but unclean. They were not much more than slaves of the church and that tradition still exists in their attitude toward women who want to serve the Church (the people are the church, claim the rote hierarchy babble). It may not be just lack of knowing women but perhaps the greater cling to male tradition is the threat of the power and grace of women. Where was the Catholic hierarch in America when slavery occurred? Where were they from 1863 to 1963? (and even later in some areas). Black friends my age remember how they had to sit in the back of the church. Justice is an evolutionary virtue. The time for women to become priests may not be now but stay with the movement. We shall overcome. Jack Gilroy

I am really shocked by Archbishop Burke's actions and dismayed that the Pope would appoint someone like this to head the highest court in the Church. The role of women in the church is an important issue and needs to be fully explored, perhaps in stages. Most of us appreciate the difficulties involved in ordaining women. Nonetheless, the subject deserves extensive and honest study in good faith. Doesn't the Reformation provide lessons in what not to do? Now, the fact that so many young people, despite a thirst for spiritual life, have left the church should provide other lessons about changes needed in the church. The appointment of Archbishop Burke to head the highest court in the Church speaks volumes too. Is he afraid of a tidal wave of women rushing for ordination unless he "holds the line?" Women will be ordained at some point despite people like him. The supposedly unchanging church does change.

Sr. Louise Lears came to Albuquerque a couple of years ago to present a Retreat Day to our group - her topic was Jesus' foundational, fundamental message: Love God, Love Neighbor. How very sad her faith and message are not appreciated by the hierarchy.

Regardless of the larger issue of women's ordination, I am greatly saddened for the disrespect of such a special minister. She is an amazing soul, the epitomy of pastoral. I pray for her and St Cronan's parish. She brings people to God and Church, absolutely opposite of the reason for the sanction.

I believe Archbishop Burke's action against Sr. Louise Lears is a great abuse of power. His action reveals the insecurity of a male celibate in the face of the leadership of a very competent religious sister and leader within the Catholic Christian Community. It amazes me the extent he seeks to abuse others in the name of being a "leader???" within the Catholic Church. I am deeply embarrassed by his actions and believe Jesus would have been compassionate and supported Sr. Louise's ministry. It is my opinion that Burke needs to remove himself from being Prefect of the Apostolic Signature in Rome and take on a servant role, such as ministering to the dying in Calcutta, as Mother Teresa did.

We have been told to pray for vocations for years. The Holy Spirit has been sending vocations. Who are the hierarchy to say "no" to half the population of the Church. I don't believe Jesus ever said, Pray the Lord of the harvest to send men only to be laborers. This form of sexism is so unworthy of the Church!

This action by Bishop Burke was a grave injustice to Sr. Lears. This kind of action on the part of a local bishop is unjust...and this comes from a church which is encouraging the Anglicans to try to avoid a schism. Issues are never resolved by separation, but by listening and compromise.

I fully support Sister Louise. We need the hierarchy to take action NOW, not in a few hundred years. I think they have forgotten that they are the servants of the Church (us) not petty dictators.

It is difficult for me to understand and to accept this violent act of injustice done against Sr. Louise Lears who has dedicated her life and service to God in our Church for so many years. The harsh penalties are in no way in keeping with Jesus's command of Love. She only demonstrated the need of inclusivity and equality of women needed in the Church today. And I am confident that Jesus stands with her and I do too!

God created both man and woman. In both the old and the new Testament there are female prophets. Jesus talked to and discussed with women. Women were helpers of Paulus. Does the Pope think he is more than God to reverse all these signs? Doesn´t God say through the prophet Joel that man and women will be prophets? It He honours them like this, how can the pope do otherwise?

This is ridiculous especially in this day and age. Sister is expressing her views and support for the equality of women in the Catholic Church. When did discussion become a sin? If discussion was truly a mortal sin in the Catholic Church then I suspect most women professing to be Catholic would be excommunicated. I believe in equality of women in the Catholic Church and am willing to discuss it with anyone so I guess I should be banned from the sacraments, too. Just because I have an opposing view doesn't mean I have turned against my church and don't follow the teachings of the Catholic religion. It just means I have an opinion. Sister is just the same. This is an outrage and, I think, an embarassment to the Catholic Church. You have my name and address and I am part of the Diocese of Fort Worth, Texas....just in case you want to remove my right to receive the sacraments!!!
