Animal Shelter...HELL!
Marlboro County Animal Shelter, run by the County in Bennettsville, South Carolina.
The newly formed Humane Society of Marlboro County is attempting to intercede on behalf of the dogs and cats there, but it's very slow going.
A long history of abuse, neglect and mismanagement are impeding their progress.
The County run "shelter", is housed in an old prison that was condemned in 1997. The County has an ACO run the place with a staff of county prisoners.
The hours of operation are very limited.
There is no "adoption fee" and animals are not vetted.
Local animal advocates are not permitted to enter during regular hours to assess animals or take photos without prior approval of county administrators, which can take days. This has often led to the death of many dogs through injury, infection, disease, starvation and mauling by penmates.

The conditions that the animals live in is just downright disgusting!
This shelter is setup within the confines of an old jail.
PLEASE don't turn away from the shelter animals, this shelter needs to close down asap, and to have that happen everyone needs to help.

At the current time of Dec 1st 2011.The only animals that are supposedly going to the old jail are vicious dogs, but is that totally true?We the undersigned want this OLD RUN DOWN JAIL that was originally condemned back in 1997 closed down for good!The site obviously was not suitable for humans to occupy.So...why should innocent animals have to suffer in there?
What goes on and has gone on for so long at this place is absolutely DEPLORABLE AND REPREHENSIBLE!
I wonder- do the locals even know it is there and it is in this deplorable state?
Apparently up until a few months ago there was a Gas chamber on the property. And this place was killing 99% of the animals they took in!
Is the the gas chamber still there?
The only local vet hasnt been euthanizing the dogs and cats.. SO…what has happening to these animals?
Things at this place are kept very quiet. And we presume that the county would like nothing more than to keep it that way- they’d rather cover up their dirty awful secrets and continue this abuse than admit things need to change and accept the help of the many people who have offered it.
Apparently there is no on site-staff, only a prisoner who is dropped off once a day to feed/clean and an ACO who works M-F who just dumps dogs and cats in the dark and damp cages.
We demand that this place is closed down for good!
