SAVE THE ANIMALS IN CRETE

Target:
ENFORCE THE LAW FOR ANIMALS IN CHANIA
In Greece , the problem concerning stray animals is
not something new or unknown. In a daily basis, all
the societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals
are facing the problems of thousands of stray animals,
as well as those who have been abused by their owners.
Often, there are some serious complaints but the
situation has not been improved. This is caused by the
lack of education and an unconcerned with the facts
government. A government, who in 2008, decide not to
enforce the sterilization and care program for stray
animals, since there were no penalties!!!!!

Every day the media receive letters from
Greek citizens and mainly tourists, regarding the
images of shame that they face in Greece in its hole!
There has been a boom recently in the number of
denouncements and the articles concerning the region
of Crete and Chania in specific. The internet has been
filled with photos of animals %u2013 Victims of road
accidents, tied to barrels, hung in the trees or
poised.
Tour guides often transfer in our associations the
dissatisfaction of tourists visiting the Chania region

Law 3170/2003, which leaves much to be
desired and was legislated before the Olympic Games of
2004 after pressure asked by the EU, has been left in
the drawers of those in charge. In addition, paragraph
10 of article 75/law 3463/2006, specifies the
municipalities solely responsible for: %u201Cthe
collection and care of stray animals and the
construction of shelters according to the laws in
force%u201D, as well as, %u201Cthe observance of the
law regarding animals of company%u201D. Of course,
the law has been systematically ignored from the
prefecture of Chania despite the pressure exerted by
our associations and the promises given.. Furthermore,
the care of stray animals has become a millstone round
the neck of animal protection unions and the few
volunteers.

It is well known that:

%u25CF The silence and lack of interest and action
states accessorial guilt
%u25CF A country%u2019s culture is reflected by the way
citizens behave animals
%u25CF This sityation has to stop at some point

Therefore we ask from you:

%u25CF To strongly protest with your signature for
the non-observance of the law
%u25CF To enforce the penalties against the offenders
%u25CF To help us in order to stop animal abuse in
Chania and resolve the problem of stray animals in the
best possible way

I have been on holiday to Crete. And I must say, it is a beautiful island. But I was shocked by the sight of so may cats, dogs (often so gentle), horsers, ignored and sometimes also abused by the local people. They only thing I could do at that moment was to give the animals some food and water. I do not understand that people do not take more care about these animals. It is no matter of poverty, because I saw a lot of villas en big cars! For me,the sight of those poor animals, ruined a great part of my holiday. And I decided that I shall not go anymore to Crete or other pats of Greece, as long as the local people and government do not more about these cruel circumstances of animals.
