Save the North American Spirit Bear

The Spirit Bear is a wildlife treasure as unique to North America as the panda is to China. Native only to the coastal rainforest of Canada's British Columbia, it is a race of black bears in which a recessive gene causes one out of ten cubs to be born all white.

A decade ago, NRDC helped save the world's last 400 Spirit Bears and their rainforest home from clearcut logging. Now, they are threatened again -- this time by Big Oil.

A pipeline carrying the world's dirtiest oil from the Alberta tar sands to the land of the Spirit Bear could end in disaster, dooming the white bear to oblivion.

Please sign this Letter of Protest demanding that the province of British Columbia actively oppose the Northern Gateway pipeline.

Enbridge Inc., the world's largest pipeline construction company (and the same one responsible for Michigan's oil spill) has proposed to open export markets for tar sands oil outside the United States — most notably China. And to get it there, they plan to build a 1,200 km pipeline from Alberta's tar sands to British Columbia's north Pacific coast over more than 1,000 streams and rivers — including some of the world's largest salmon producing watersheds — and introduce super oil tankers (revoking an existing moratorium on large ships) to transport oil through the pristine waters of the Great Bear Rainforest.
Help me and others stop this from ruining Canada's Rainforest.
