Stop Support of Offshore Drilling - Drive Less!

  • recipient: The American People
Help decrease demand for offshore drilling and other toxic forms of energy manufacturing by driving less.

The best way to reduce the need for offshore drilling and to minimize accidents such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill is to reduce the demand for these energy sources.  It is a sad truth and a difficult idea to confront, but we all have to take responsibility for what happened off of the Louisiana coast and the resulting disaster.  By accepting that driving and mass consumption in general supports BP and other oil company's need to create more drilling sites, we each can make a conscious effort for change.  We must vote with our actions to stop future disasters.

The biggest movements in history start at home, one person at a time.  As we each move toward a common goal, our numbers will grow and our voice becomes stronger.  Commit to making our voice so loud that big oil companies like BP and advocates for offshore drilling understand that we will no longer support them; that we will no longer allow business practices that can lead to such large scale disasters.  The change towards a cleaner energy future can't wait until they have sucked every dollar they can from the ocean depths.

It is a difficult commitment that requires lifestyle changes from each of us.  Start with small steps by riding a bike or taking public transit to work a certain number of days each weak (even 1 day a week can have an impact).  Ride your bike or walk to the gym as a warm up for your workout.  Start paying more for cleaner energy production methods.  There are a number of ways to make this change and every small step counts.

Sign this petition and spread the word that we will no longer support companies that put our natural environment in constant danger.

-A quick thought on this topic:  Walmart classically moves into small towns and destroys local markets by being cheaper and more convenient then their competition (local businesses!).  The result:  lower working wages, less job opportunity and growth, outsourced goods, and thus a weakened local economy.  So who's to blame?  Walmart for having these business practices or the people for supporting Walmart by purchasing their products?  In the end, Walmart only exists in these areas because the people don't understand the system and/or buy into it because it is cheaper and more convenient.  Sound familiar?
