Pass HB 478

Dear House Education Committee,

As a college student in Louisiana I would like to express my support of Louisiana HB 478, proposed by the Honorable Representative Champagne.  I feel that this bill will be beneficial for students because it allows for effective teachers to remain in the classroom.  “Last in, First out” policies can hinder students by removing the teachers most dedicated to their future success, while protecting senior teachers, some of whom may be stagnating. The provisions of this bill will allow for the best quality teachers to remain in the classroom, regardless of seniority.

While we support HB 478, we would also like to implore the committee to keep in mind that while standardized testing is currently the primary tool used to determine student achievement, it should not be the sole measure of determining teacher quality and effectiveness.  I urge you to pass this bill, but stay mindful of methods for teacher evaluation.

Thank you for your consideration.
